Remember Zhonyas was a 120 ap item with a 90 second cooldown. The item has since been gutted to its current stat with riot claiming that the active is super gold efficient. Yet they made stopwatch and now everyone in pro play is buying it.
I honestly don't like Zhonyas but it just goes to show that its too good for mages, so they nerf it, but is fine for AD champs to have access to the active?
Oleandervine3 votesThe didn't JUST nerf it because of the active. They nerfed it because it became incredibly staple on almost all mages' kits due to the high AP, the armor, and the active together. On dropping the AP and giving it CDR, they made it more of a niche item, and less of a full-blown must have.
Whisper871 votesIt was too efficient not only because of the active, but because of the value when you combine the stats with the active. I used to play Kassadin as one of my main 2 mid laners and would go Zhonya's second item unless the enemy team was stacking MR. It worked 90% of the time because Zhonya's had so much AP I could still burst squishies pretty hard, and at only 2 items the armor from Zhonyas was enough to make me not afraid of ADC at all until at least a full third full item came in for them.
