The boards IS a hivemind... sort of...

First off its only sort of a hivemind. Also I posted this in gameplay as im going to be using mostly gameplay examples to explain. Now onto the main point.

The boards is a hivemind only in popularity base. You can shout "different people are different" all you want but there are a select few things that are important to note.

The "Hivemind" is really many separate hiveminds, so not a hivemind at all. What it is though is a large majority of people agree on posts not generally affected by the post itself. And there are several reasons.

  1. The rules of the boards: Hate Yasuo, dislike ADCs, like memes. These are generally shared with a large populous of the boards, it doesnt mean that the things relating are fully true, just that they follow the same thread.

This can cause issues like upvoting and downvoting based on thread titles and not even reading the post, this can cause a large amount of inconsistency and also perpetuating the hivemind beleif.

  1. Not all the hiveminds are present at once: People say that "Well Ori was balanced a month ago and all of a sudden people hate her" This is because the people that hate her were just quiet right then, or just didnt feel like discussing about it. For instance, I personally HATE laning against an Ori, but if there are 0 posts pertaining it on the boards i wont talk about it on the boards, ill talk about things pertaining to what is popular there. NOW if Ori becomes a talking point, the hivemind becomes active and a large group of people who were quite all start talking about it. This is what i mean about visual hivemind, and why popular opinions change quickly.

If its popular opinion games are long, everyone who thinks games are long will agree with eachother and downvote people who think games are the right length. This causes the boards to seem like everyone wants longer games, where in actuality it may only be a small portion, this is with an exception but ill get to that later.

  1. Upvote Farming: These people dont voice their ACTUAL opinions and just post things that will get upvoted, this causes an even larger beleif in the hivemind, when in reality these same people 2 or 3 months later will COMPLETELY post conflicting posts.

  2. Riot themselves: Riot listens to whats popular, and this causes whats popular to become a reality which in turn can change or activate other "hiveminds"

  3. The Exception: There is 1 exception to the Hivemind; the populars. These are your Miras, Malicious Metals, Rubicks, Ralanrs, etc. These people have such a large following that no matter what they say, wether they agree or disagree with what is being said they get upvotes. And well they deserve them since usually the people who became popular did so by making long, thought-out threads, that flow by logic rather than just plain rage/upset. They explain WHY. At the same time these are the ONLY people ALLOWED to disagree with the current hivemind because 9/10 what they say is still true, or at least explained.

Now Im not gonna say wether the "hivemind" is a good or bad thing. However i am tired of seeing "the boards has diverse people" as a reaction to someone claiming Hivemind when they are still sort of right, people DO think differently, but with how upvoting works, and when people decide to post, this causes a popular opinion, which becomes the ONLY opinion for a while in the majority of the boards. So while "The Hivemind doesnt exist" Isnt 100% true, it still is different than the boards being 1 loud voice.

i know this is not aimed at everyone but jumped i'd jump in and let you know you're not alone here.

1)I don't hate yasuo but to say his kit is fine is a flat lie. It's bloated and riot has said it themselves. That being said i like playing him and i know where he is weak he has no escape if you pay attention cause if he has nothing to dash to he is done. but he has a lot in his kit so he really does not have to run. This being said i think he needs a better kit

  1. I dont follow the hive i am always true to my thoughts even if no one else shares them.

3)whats an upvote? i really have forgot i don't get them much as this fourm is like playing in bronze no one thinks and if they do it's the crap spoon fed from the hive so i get downvotes.

4)Agreed as well i have yet for them to answer one of my more meaningful post.

5)I have tried long drawn out post to explain things only to be counter with hive logic (you're bronze your this your that blah blah blah). I think honestly the only reason they have the following they do is because they have been here forever and a day

Too many people post based on memes and not understanding.

More like it's mostly made of sheep, who don't want to let others know they think for themselves, so they upvote who says what they think.

The "Sheeps" and the "Sheep-callers" are all sheeps, just different breeds and of different packs.

But which makes up the majority eh? The challenge of life isn't learning, it's training the brain to think on it's own.

2 things:

  • The point of independence isn't to be different to the "majority" but to achieve critical thinking and autonomy.
  • The scariest thing in life isn't being a "sheep" but it's to have the illusion of independence.

Yet all I can think of is 'follow the white rabbit' lol.

I don't think you can sort of have a hive mind.

At no point did this post say anything indicative of a hive mind. They did, however, touch on a legitimate problem with the boards and the reddit style upvote/downvote system; that it is not condusive to reasonable discourse, but only to vindication. I imagine the description you gave about "trends" in posting is accurate, but it is also why it is, preciscely, not a hive mind. Hive-mind, as it is often used on the boards, seems to just be another term of vindication being used by people to stroke their self-righteous egos about the opinions they have about the state of the game (via the demonization of "others"). Which is why it is funny that you talked about upvote farming....but I'll give you the benefit of doubt and simply assume that you were stretching the use of a term because you couldn't think of a better phrasing.

The reddit style upvote system is perfect for memes, or other trivial matters, but look at any subreddit about a topic of debate and most of what you will see is just people sharing sentiments about things and then searching for evidence after the fact to verify, or otherwise, justify their sentiments. The subreddits for this backwards science of verification, rather than falsification (actual scientific methodology), of one's feels over reals simply serve as a social platform for further vindication of one's feelings by finding solace in the aggreement of others.

err no, the populars have their own hive mind, and their own followers. They in themselves are a group of hiveminds.

Fish = praise his memes or die.

Metal = Praise morde and juggernauts

Rubicks = being rude

etc.

Every single post with upvotes is a "hive mind"

It's not really a collective boards thing, as it is different from post to post.

The outliers from the hiveminds are usually the people that get downvoted. Whether or not you judge the downvoted people as being stupid or not is entirely up to you. They are, however, the people that are going outside of the hivemind in posts.

Say you have a thread with "Buff Yasuo" and a thread with "nerf Yasuo"

You pick one side; say you pick the common "nerf Yasuo" side.

You go to the "nerf Yasuo" thread and make a well-written comment explaining why you agree, and get a ton of upvotes.

You go to the "buff Yasuo" thread and make a well-written comment explaining why you disagree, and get a ton of downvotes.

So, are you a part of THE hivemind or not?

The answer is that there is no giant hivemind; it's just something that varies post-by-post.

What's my hive mind?

Yasuo hate isn't a hive mind mentality. He is basically a cancer, if cancer was a video game character, requiring multiple resources from the enemy team to combat his kit. There's an imbalance in counterplay against him and it's high time Yasuo players realized this.

Or I suppose, the usual excuse of "bronzie nabs ned to git gud" or "just CC/camp him until he cries" works. Yasuo players are probably the biggest crybabies with a hive mind mentality for acting like a victim just because their weeaboo overlord has an overloaded kit and they refuse to accept that perhaps he actually has way too much going on.

This. I appreciate a thread like this that reaffirms my feelings about the actual amount of progress and feedback that gets seen by Riot. Good ideas get thrown to the wind because people don't consider the stance fully from every angle. They let something trivial or biased determine how they treat the thread (upvote/downvote/etc), and that leads to a very small handful of meaningful posts actually making it into Riot's hands.

That isn't how a hive mind works. All you described is that certain ideas are more popular than others. There is always disagreement on everything on the boards with the exception of maybe minion block and that is a function of how annoying minion block is.

And a hive mind is formed through those popular opinions from the board's favourite users and hot topics. What happens to disagreements made? They're downvoted into oblivion, giving the illusion that a different opinion is "wrong" thanks to how the upvoting system works. Arguments usually flow one way in favour of the majority, hence why it's kind of like a hive mind.

On topic, I just wish some people on the boards would think before posting. Especially when it's about balance and champs they have never played before. A measly meme and some ignorant banter can really change something.

You are implying that people actually care about upvote/downvotes which is simply not the case. All people use up votes/doe votes for is to get a sense of what the majority thinks. No one uses it to infleuence their own opinion or determine which opinion is "right" or "wrong", simply what is popular.

This is why no matter how many times a yasuo main gets downvoted, they will continue to defend their main. Conversely, no matter how many nerf lee sin topics get upvoted, lee sin mains will continue to claim he is balanced. The user base simply does not bandwagon onto the popular opinion to form any sort of hivemind.

You're giving people on these boards way too much credit lol. There's a reason why unpopular topics and topics nobody want to be reminded of never see the light of day on these boards (And the Reddit boards too). Downvotes hide those topics. That in itself already makes a user doubt their own opinion by making them wonder if their concern is even a concern at all.

That's not at all a hive mind my dude. Hive minds are like ants. If we were a hive mind, we would all be doing on the same page, thinking of the same stuff, and working towards one singular goal. This isn't the case at all. No human group can really be a hive mind by definition. The most we can be is SIMILAR. Hive mind is a far too strong term to describe a human community.

but with how upvoting works, and when people decide to post, this causes a popular opinion, which becomes the ONLY opinion for a while in the majority of the boards.

That's not how it works. It doesn't become the ONLY opinion, it just becomes the one pushed to the front in what's Hot. There are many other opinions that people don't see on the surface.

Oh shit, apparently I'm popular.

You post, it's a bit confused. Either posters are or are not of a hive like mind. If you're going to contradict your hypothesis "All who post here are part of a hive mind" then reject it and try another metaphor.

However, I think I understand what you are trying to articulate and I disagree.

Point 1, I don't hate Yas or ADC. And who doesn't like a well thought out meme? What number of people does it take for you to label them hive minded? Pizza! Millions of people love pizza, does that mean they are hive minded? Kudos however for picking up on trends though.

Points 2-5 are all assumptions followed up by stating and observation without hard evidence. Also, if a hive mind existed at all I'd imagine that if the "mind" is present so to are all the "minds" connected to it (See the Borg, in The Next Generation). Meaning that if all minds are not present then you are not witness to a hive mind.

What we are witness to human argument. For every premise to every argument there exist a group humans that will argue for and against.

Of course people who agree ban together, such is human nature.

Upvote Farming: These people dont voice their ACTUAL opinions and just post things that will get upvoted, this causes an even larger beleif in the hivemind, when in reality these same people 2 or 3 months later will COMPLETELY post conflicting posts.

Like this thread?

This is kinda the problem with a lot of this 'critique' kind of threads, where it embodies the things they're criticising. It's literally a thread that criticises mob-rules while is made to be benefited from the said mob-rules.

Also there is this problem: So if this thread does well, attention and feedback wise, does it support your claim or does it reject it? Because you can literally phrase it so that it means both ways.

Or maybe, there is very little amount of upvote-farming and hivemind and whatever conspiracy, grand schemes and overarching narrative. It's mostly just people upvoting threads that they believe to be true and deserving of other people's attention, and people's perspective change over time?

.............

Threads like this only create "counter-circlejerk" which is worse than the opposite version, because at least much of the circlejerk were not staged, but this type is.

It only creates the "Look at the sheeple" crowds who are just annoying too look at and deal with to say the least.

And worst of all, it does nothing to solve the actual problem, if there is any thing begin with. You can change things if everyone is believing in something factually wrong (though it depends sometimes. Things more sensitive to the current political affairs for instance may take a lot of time and effort for that to happen), but you can't change it if everyone shares a similar preference. You are not more superior or more right to have a different preference that goes against the norm, nor are people wrong to share similar personal opinions, especially on things such as "I think this XXX champ has issues atm" (I mention this because obviously people are more likely to have enough to form an educated opinion on a character in the game they play than other say, real world matters), even just for a short period.

I generally take issues with this kinds of threads because it's not just non-productive, but very counter-productively so. But that's me.
