Question on rage blade

So the phantom strike for on hit effects. does that only work for effects that are active or any effect with "on-hit" effects? Like does Kayle still get bonus damage, from her empowered autos, even if she doesn't have the effect active? If so, how does the item work in conjuction with champions that have to meet certain requirements, but if met they have something that is basically an "on hit" effect? For example if for some reason i built rage blade on Sona, would it trigger powercord? Would it trigger the bonus effects of powercord? Which bonus effects?

It depends.

Some effects are coded as onhit effects, while others are actually a different ability from your normal autoattack.

I just tested with Sona in practice tool. The aura effect from Hymn of Valor can be triggered by Guinsoo's Rage, but this is a one-time effect so it is consumed. It is not triggered twice. Guinsoo's Rage happens before the attack missile lands so it can consume effects like Hymn of Valor before the attack lands. It doesn't really matter for one-time effects because you don't get an extra proc.

Power Chord is different. The bonus damage happens when the missile hits, even though Guinsoo's Rage triggers first. This is because it's not an on-hit effect. It's a separate ability from her normal autoattack.

With Kayle, Guinsoo's Rage only triggers the currently active version of her E. So when she is melee it will trigger the weaker version with no splash damage.

Thank you for doing that work.

Not going to lie, was REALLY hoping it was going to be some stupid level of interaction like rage blade triggered hymn’s bonus damage every second attack while also triggering all 3 effects of power cord. Basically a situation of “why would you ever build this”. Coupled with “but if you did it’s broken as can be”

I find it hard to really understand what you specifically ask on each question, but I believe that I can answer all your questions by simply explaining exactly how its passive works:

  • It procs all on-hit effects that you currently have twice on every second autoattack. This includes item passives such as Nashor's or BotRK, it includes champion passives such as Teemo's E, Vayne's W or Vi's W, and it includes time-based actives such as Kayle's E or Kog'Maw's W.
  • Single-instance buff effects ("on the next auto attack"), such as Sheen's passive and its upgrades, Sona's passive or every "next attack is empowered" ability (there are lots of 'em), won't be applied twice. That is because they're already applied in the first time the on-hit is procced, thus consuming the effect.
  • In order for Rageblade to proc (and stack, for that matter), an auto-attack has to be issued. That means that spells that proc on-hit effects such as Ezreal's Q or GP's Q won't stack nor proc a stacked Rageblade. (funnily enough, this rule also means Azir can stack Rageblade every time he attacks with a Soldier, since it counts as "issuing an autoattack". It's still uneffective on him though, since Soldiers are considered abilities and don't proc on-hit effects, so they don't proc the passive itself).
  • Rageblade's passive doesn't interact with many unique champion abilities that involve an active component. It won't turn Aatrox's W from 3-hit to 2-hit, it wont grant Yasuo 2 charges of Gathering Storm, it won't consume 2 ammo from Jhin/Graves autoattacks and so on. As long as there's no active component though, such as Yi's passive or Jax's ult passive (or the aforementioned Vayne/Vi W), it will count towards stacking their passives.
