We used to call games like League shovelware.

Back when the SNES and N64 were popular, a lot of shitty companies would push out cheap cash grabs that were obviously half-assed by obviously greedy companies (or they were straight up copies of other games). We called those shitty games "shovelware" and rightly laughed them out of the industry. Only games made by companies who gave a fuck would survive, and gaming was in its golden age.

Nowadays though, modern society teaches people to be fucking apathetic morons that don't give a damn about anything that isn't directly affecting them. People don't have standards anymore, they don't think about anything anymore, hell I'm not sure people can even dress themselves anymore.

So, Riot Tencent does all kinds of horrible, shitty things -- a lot of them near daily, but no one gives a damn.

  • They lie to us repeatedly.

  • They've admitted several times they manipulate balance to make more money.

  • They sell out to a shitty Chinese conglomerate that obviously will not put anything over money.

  • They prioritize LC$, despite 99.8% of the playerbase playing a totally different game.

  • They ignore obviously broken champs, or buff champs that don't need it (to make money).

  • They spend an obscene amount of time doing anything that would help the game, despite kids in high school doing a better, faster job (but then that's every shitty F2P company).

... like, what do I have to do to make people realize Riot Tencent is a horrible, horrible company? Hell, even employees say it's a terrible company. A lot of people have been saying the game is dying lately (and whether that's true or not I donno), and honestly it should. A company that puts money above all else, and constantly fucks over the consumer base to try and make more money, should not exist -- if people had standards, they wouldn't! A company like Riot wouldn't exist back in the day. And League would be considered shovelware for fucking sure.

I wish people would pull their heads out of their asses, and tell all these shitty companies to put out or fuck off. But modern society teaches you that's wrong. Fun stuff.

Don't you continue to play the game anyway?

When the entire industry has gone to fucking shit, outside of occasional little indie games that last 5-10 hours, there's not much else to do. The game underneath all Riot's shit is still enjoyable, but it's quickly losing its appeal with hotfixing Brokensuo, buffing AD, and all that. Makes me sad since there's really nothing to fall back to.

You at anytime can quit playing and make your own game if everything is shit, no one is stopping you, or forcing you to complain.

What's the point in doing that? If I know the story, if I know how to win in every part of the game, if nothing is an adventure... what's the point? Just to show that I can? I don't care about vanity, so that does nothing for me.

I want the industry to go back to how it was, when only good games made it anywhere, instead of the shitshow we've got going on now. Making one of those little indie gems that are quickly forgotten won't do anything to help that -- the only way to do anything is to try and convince the consumer base to open their eyes, which I'm learning is almost impossible to do.

Ever think maybe YOU are the one that is wrong then?

I mean I am part of what's wrong. I was born into a generation I don't belong in. But games and the companies behind them are just objectively worse now, and very few people will argue that.

Not really, now the methods to pull shit have changed, had the options they had now existed back in the day they would have. Games were made impossibly difficult not for the sake of enjoyment, but to string out the experience as long as possible and the moment arcade games came to consoles, people realized that. Ghost and Ghouls, Battletoads, Punch Out, all made ridiculously hard with little way to save progress just for the sake of sapping your quarters. For christ's sake, you had to beat Ghost and Ghouls TWICE just to fully beat it, arcade machines were the original microtransactions.

There were plenty of asset flips and games using their prior title's popularity just to draw in people that they did back in the day, Street Fighter 2010, Super Noah's Ark is literally just an asset flip of Wolfenstein (which is still good because Wolfenstein, but not the point), and a plethora of other shit to subpar games. You only remember the good ones, but there were PLENTY of bad cases back in the day too.

I will give you that companies do have to work FAR less to make money nowadays, but stop with this bullshit of "Gaming is dead, no good games come out anymore, games where you can just sit down and enjoy are long gone." Because that is quite literally bullshit.

GoW 4, Uncharted series, Persona 5, Until Dawn, Last of Us, all amazing experience without the bullshit of microtransactions dragging them down and are in their own rights not only great, but better then a LOT of the earlier stuff and all of this is JUST on Playstation mind you.

You just don't like modern video games and your rose tinted glasses have ascended to rose tinted eyeballs, get over yourself already and quit whining, no one is forcing you to play these video games, no one is forcing you to do anything, stop whining when you refuse to actually be part of the solution and NO, whining about it while continuing to play isn't being part of the solution.

Yo jam, have you ever play hunt showdown?

I have.

I politely but firmly disagree with your assessment.

Onotori1 votes

On what grounds?

Kai Guy2 votes

My opinions on the topics you discuss. The lack of evidence to support your claims. the fact your going to likely respond with some variation of your a fanboy, your blind, look at X, or a disregard for the reasonable context of an event to support your view. I have a distaste for your attitude to others, the blatant disregard for fellow players.

For me, Its far to biased of a post to generate any agreement or sympathy. I don't find it to adhere to reality. Look you and I have butted heads on the boards before do we really need to rehash that again? we both know we are not gonna see eye to eye on things mate. Ya labled folks who disagree with ya as " fucking apathetic morons" and yet your surprised by your inability to change anybody's mind?

My bias, to be clear. A massive majority of the problems in league are because of players. This has been the case for the entirety of the games duration, same as it was in dota allstars, same as it is in dam near every team pvp game I know about. I don't view a constantly shifting meta as a negative thing, for me its what I want in a moba. This will undeniable make Riot more $, its not, how ever a greedy cash grab asshole move. There are better Devs then riot, there are many many many worse devs, I don't buy the attitude they are apathetic or uncaring about the game. I've chatted with reds over the years and that's not their attitude, in game or out .

Your call on how you wish to respond mate. I will make the same offer as last time, If you want to have a chat about other games to see if we can find ya something you might enjoy spending your time on feel free to let me know. Personally im a fan of supergiant games Bastion and Transistor. I liked pyre for the story and aesthetics but the gameplay was meh. I am REALLY enjoying Hunt Showdown a good deal right now despite a lot of issues it has, Im . Xcom 2 is pretty solid, some rubbish DLC but some Dam solid Mod work, long war 2 mod deserves a mention for rebuilding the game completely with out a dramatic shift in gameplay. phoenix point is something im keeping an eye on.

Im still a bit bummed by Gigantic as it felt like it had a lot of potential but the devs just could not quite get it right and decided to just let it die. pretty irritated with the devs for that.

But isn't that what every company boils down to evantually?

I'm pretty sure Riot/Tencent/The Illuminati aren't the first to do this.

Onotori1 votes

Oh there were other companies like that, sure, but they never survived very long -- since, again, people used to have standards.

EA has survived for this long so far.

As I said, people no longer have standards.

1982 was when Ea games started yea?

It is meant to be this way. As long as RIOT (not tencent) keeps the game fun, I'm in for the ride.

OP, you have never seen a modern day shovelware. And no, I am not even talking about that pissing hell hole called Steam Greenlight/Direct just yet where many on its catalogue weren't even started let alone a shovelware, but the more 'traditional' shovelware (the sad part is now there are even levels of 'quality' between shovelwares now).

Have you seen Vroom in the Night Sky? Or Double Dragon IV (2017)? Or the legendary, Life of Black Tiger?

These ain't even the tip of the iceberg, not even REMOTELY close, and these are just from the last year, too.

Then back to the elephant, there's the glory of Steam Greenlight/Direct. Cue the Digital Homicide and Silicon Echo Studios ""games"", where listing them along will make the server explode (exaggeration, but you get the idea). The 2 ALONE have a combined roughly 200 """games""" that were ""published"" (this is not even counting the ones they were still in the process of trying to push through Greenlight/Direct), with Silicon Echo Studios mopping the floor with the other with 170 """"games"""", before the 2 "studios" went out of business with Valve. And oh boy, this is just the tip of the tip of the tip of the iceberg.

After all, there's the Wii and Wii U which if not for the gold rush in the later stages of the latter, they almost surely would have been remembered solely as the 'shovelware console' due to the obscene amount of shovelwares the platforms were subjected to. Or Koei Tecmo shamelessly publishing basically the same game for like 50 times in a row with slightly different window dressing (as well as, to quote Jim Sterling, "WHAT THEY DID TO ZHENG HE"). And how can we mention shovelwares again without going back to Steam... Steam is now flooded with shovelwares that rush through the Greenlight/Direct because Valve still don't get fundamental QA/QC and so 10k games, yes, 10,000 fucking games have been ""released"" onto Steam in a mere window of TWO YEARS between 2016 and 2017. TEN. FUCKING. THOUSAND. """GAMES""". IN 2 YEARS!!!!

You just don't see actual shovelwares because you don't see them, it doesn't mean they don't exist. To call League a shovelware is really stretching it way too frigging much. Whatever League is, it is objectively not a shovelware no matter how you look at it. THOSE, not League, are actual shovelwares.

......

Also no, Tencent is an investment giant simultaneously investing in a shit ton of businesses from game and apps devs to news sites and to forking banks and whatnot. It just looks for company to invest money into and ask for returns, that's all they do. They do NOT give a shit how Riot makes their money, or how they structure their games, or how they balance the game; they simply don't have enough time to care even if they want to, but they also generally don't care. To blame everything onto Tencent while skipping on Riot entirely is naive to say the least.

Not to mention, people like you also always conveniently ignore that Riot was bought out by Tencent with a super-majority of almost 93% the instant Season 1 started, which through using your logic this would also suggest Tencent is also responsible for the "good" League everybody was fond of. But I guess not because we need a scapegoat amiright?
