What's everyone's stances on Assassins right now?

Just curious to know. If it's a specific assassin champ that's especially good to hear about.

The boards and reddit have always only been a minority of the community as a whole as they are the only players who are vocal about what they think. Just because the boards aren't lit up with complaint threads doesn't mean that the majority of the community doesn't think that assassins are still bad.

AD assassins have sat on the top of the assassin tiers ever since Riot did hardcore tinkering with lethality and squeezed out the current iteration of Dusk Blade. They build their Duskblade, choose between BC and Ghost blade or Ghost blade and BC, then just do their thing. They aren't really broken but they're definitely stronger than their AP counterparts.

AP assassins have been in the dumpster for awhile because when it came to the update they're the ones who got the short end of the stick and had their kits hit with "counterplay". "Counterplay" Which funnily enough doesn't have to apply to champions who are currently doing an assassins job better than assassins but being ignored because they're classified differently.

Fizz was broken for being able to 1 shot an ADC with a full combo, Riven flash diving a full 5 man team and 1 tapping the squishies with 2 abilities and cleaning up the rest is perfectly acceptable.

Oh god Riot chooses to ignore the subreddits and boards.

AD assassins are indeed overloaded since lethality as a whole failed as a concept. Plus, ADCs use it more than actual assassins do a lot of the time. However, AD assassins are a nightmare to deal with when ahead since lethality is just so good (besides Rengar, poor kitty).

AP assassins are just ignored and I think the primary issue AP assassins have is their massive delays in damage and lack of a magic pen. item outside of Void Staff. Liandrys isn't very good and Sorc. boots don't provide much at all. This makes tanks incredibly difficult to deal with for AP assassins as it's a chore to even do your primary job which is to get to the squishies, which is hard when you have a 10 foot tall Cho/Mao with 200 of each resist and 5.4k HP right in front of them.

The current situation of AP assassins is hilarious since AP mages outperform AP assassins in every single way besides mobility. Veigar can one shot pretty much everyone post 6, so can Annie, and Syndra, and Orianna, and Cassiopeia and Azir (sort of), and Malz and Lux, and all of them provide more waveclear and CC than assassins, as well as more zone control. AP assassins lack that oomph of damage that mages possess, which is ironic since AP assassins are supposed to be the main bursters in LoL. AP assassins also need to get up close and personal, and because of the changes to their damage in terms of delay it's pretty difficult to remain relevant out of laning phase. I don't understand why a Syndra ult can be considered ok and yet a Katarina full combo is considered unfair.

not strong enough to be choose during Worlds (unless kha)... contrary too their ap counter parts

HongChongDong1 votes

The game doesn't work like that. Assassins are a shit role period so they have no strategic value in professional play which is basically a completely different game from league of legends. The AP assassins have some utility that their AD counterparts don't have which makes them valuable in the LCS, but for solo queue purposes those mean jack all.

Sun Wu Ryuumoku1 votes

i get ur point... but what's viable on pro scene is viable on solo Q (or broken ). Assassins as Talon and Zed was viable at pro level during early season (sadly it changed).

HongChongDong2 votes

What you said makes no sense. So you get my point, but my point is wrong however you confirm my opinion right after? What is your point?

The answer is a resounding no. Pro scene is not Solo queue, never will be. It's a different game. Fizz is picked in the LCS because of his ability to pick targets with his ult, but his issues that he faces even occur in LCS and still continue to bury him in solo queue.

What's viable on pro scene is viable (pick viability) on solo Q but what's viable in solo Q isn't viable on pro scene.

There are champs that need the communication from pro play like TahmKench to be really good. Id say Fizz is kind of one of them but he also works in soloq because his enemies make more mistakes and are less coordinated.

Out of curiosity which ap assassins do you think are weak currently? Because Ekko, Katatina, Kassadin, Fizz and Diana arent even bad, I'd go as far to say Katarina is too strong. Leblanc isnt bad either, but leblanc isnt an assassin.

Katarina is inconsistent due to the presence of tanks once the actual meta starts. Ekko will always be good since he has CC+his really safe ult. Kass isn't really an assassin since there was no focus on him in the assassin update, but he's doing well. Fizz is doing decent but it's rough for him. Diana will always be good. Leblanc is in the same position as Kat.

As for Akali.....who's that champion again? I haven't seen her at all this year. Is she some kind of new champ that came out?

HongChongDong2 votes

Ekko, Fizz, Akali Are probably the weakest. Diana is improving, Katarina has a decent potential to be strong when played well, Leblanc (Who is still an assassin) has very flexible mechanics that help her make up for shortcomings, and Kassadin has been a strong pick for awhile. Ekko I feel is still a tad weak, but I he also has really flexible mechanics like Leblanc so he can outplay plenty of situations if done right.

I don't think that AP assassins are "weak", but I will say that their itemisation choices are incredibly shallow compared to AD assassins. Also their burst delays are a lot higher.

lethality seems a bit to strong, as it turns non-assassins into assassins without a problem. A J4 or Graves can just kill you with 1 combo without a problem at all. This makes AD assassins just a bit broken; Most of them got no problem killing your ass in 2/3 seconds tops at level 6 with just a Dirk.

AP assassins are in a good spot I think.

Ehhh, the only good AP assassins right now are Kat and Fizz, but they won't last long since they rely on Electrocute (Aery's for Fizz?) which will get nerfed.

It would be nice if AP assassins and AP champs in general could get another Magic pen. item though.

Kass and LB are perfectly fine. They aren't as strong as lethality users, but as an assassin they are more then enough in a good spot.

Kass has always been fine. Leblanc however might need some love since her damage has far too much delay.

Tortunga1 votes

LB is to safe to not have long delay between her damage. If she could jump in do her whole combo and jump out in a second, she would just be as toxic/annoying to play against as the old one. Might be slightly biased as i really hate that champion

Do you think ADCs are fair then? Cause ADCs like Trist can jump in, do their burst damage and then jump out.

Tortunga1 votes

Trist got to kill somebody to get a reset, LB doesn't. Not saying ADC are fine as their itemization is just plain better than every other role, but there is a difference between a Trist jumping in and a LB jumping in.

Can't argue with that. Although LB atm is a lot riskier since her burst is so delayed.

Personally I feel people still judge what a good assassin is based on what they were like before the rework which is something Riot was trying to prevent (hence the increased amount of counterplay to avoid instaburst).

All of them seem pretty meh. Kat is out of line, clearly. They're still annoying as all hell to lane against, but if you can get past that phase of that game they seem okay

Kat will only be good while Electrocute remains good, and while people play squishier champs in the preseason. The moment people play tankier, more meta champs this whole Kat fad will die out. Also Electrocute is likely to be nerfed, so there's that.

Overpowered as f** with lethality and mpen buffs, but yet I'd rather have that a million times over a botlane meta

Agreed. Lethality is overperforming. Ironically enough M.pen. is underperforming due to the removal of flat m.pen. runes and the lack of representation for the stat. itemisation wise, with the only relevant m.pen. item being Void Staff (Sorc. boots hardly count). Sudden Impact is nice, but it can't replace m.pen. runes.

Well, assassins now have compelled me to take Leo and Taric support more often than Soraka, so that's a thing.

Have yet to play Talon under the new runes. But seen him in action.

Talon with the new runes is exactly as you would think, really good. Duskblade is still obnoxious and overbearing to face and Electrocute gives him far too much burst combined with Sudden Impact.

We haven't hear any whining on how assassins are utterly crap for a few days now, which usually is a pretty reliable indicator that they are bullshit broken.

Debatable. Even if some are there are usually others are useless (hello Leblanc) and it won't last long since the meta will revert back to revolving around slow play.

ad is busted and that's the way riot wants it they're scared of magic and mages they are hardcore try hards that bring out their swords they don't care as much for ap champions just look at the items they have it's so boring and not a lot of variety whilst ad users get a ton of items with tons of variety when compared to ap items they even implemented lethality into the game for ad champs its clear what the company favors

Leblanc and Fizz are the the only assassins that have timed buffers on their burst.

And I hate it. Leblanc's farming has been gimped. Her sigil can't be reapplied on minions which is frustrating to farm with when you're behind.

I miss Talon's old Cutthroat.

Assassins are still just as toxic and anti-fun as ever, if not more so. Rito's idea of an "assassin" is being able to instantly 100-0 anybody, in a way that has the least possibility for reaction or counterplay. Just 1 example: Rengar can 1-shot an ADC at level 6 with zero items. A fed Rengar can 1-shot a 4 armor-item Malphite.

Assassins as they currently stand, are disgusting and uninteractive. Rito needs to reanalyze what an assassin should look like. Probably steal some ideas from Blizzard, cause Rito sure as hell doesn't understand what the words "game balance" mean.

You do know that "assassin" for Blizzard means 100-0 from invis., right? That's not an unhealthy concept either since ADCs can do it with 1-3 autos, so can mages, so can bruisers/juggernauts. It's not a unique thing to assassins at all (hello Chogath ).

That's not true about Rengar at all since all of his level 6 burst apart from his initial crit. is avoidable AND you get a huge indicator telling you that he's in the area. Also you can bodyblock the mark so he can't crit. the target, so there's that.

A HotS assassin can't instagib somebody in a fraction of a second, like literally every LoL assassin can. If you're getting 100-0'd by one in HotS, it's cause you were out of position or your team is just blatantly ignoring what's happening. I'm not here to discuss ADCs, bruisers or burst mages, but at least they require items to delete somebody, whereas assassins do not and yet assassin items have lower price tags regardless. Does that say something about items? Probably. Does that say something about assassins? Definitely.

I'm not denying Cho is bs. We all know he is. As for Rengar, that is literally on his current iteration that he's 1-shotting ADCs at 6 with no items. It's not even like he's being sneaky about it, I literally see Rengars ult on screen and 1-shot the ADC, despite his whole team seeing all of it happen and trying to stop it. Idgaf about your theoretical Rengar "counterplay," he still 100-0's regardless of it all.

And HotS is a game for babies who need handholding 24/7, hence the lack of items and individual K/D/A.

I never said the game wasn't balanced and didn't have issues. If that was the case the forums would be extremely quiet. What I did say is that this game isn't meant to be friendly for everyone. Each champion is broken in their own way, and changing that is silly.

I'm sorry, are we talking about DotA 2 now? The game where literally every character is competitively viable?

Last I checked, LoL at any given time never has more than a handful of playable picks. GhostCrawler himself stated last week that Rito intentionally keeps many champions balanced around being "bronze champions." His words.

Then maybe it's time that LoL learnt from Dota 2/Icefrog. Sure, Dota 2's balancing isn't amazing, but it's eons better than LoL's current balance scheme.
