Sona Mega thread

http://jolstatic.fr/www/captures/957/3/32963.jpg So i started to play Sona again in high diamond rankeds And honestly she's not THAT bad, that being said she still has issues that i don't think riot will fixe which makes her a pain to use in solo queue in high elo

  1. OK i lied, or more i was wrong her laning phase is strong depending on you and YOUR ADC, her Q+passive deals decent damage ~~18% of the adc hp without any masteries increasing damage, that's good really good what isn't is being destroyed afterward because of 325 base ms+nothing but a poor heal and shield on high mana cost to save you. i laned against a vayne 3 games ago, and after i did Q+passive she just chased me and removed 50% of my hp i know my adc is should have done something but this is solo queue goddamnit

see meddler or axe or whoever who wants to work on Sona, IT DOESN'T MAKE SENS, THAT AN ENCHENTER IS EXPECTED TO GO INTO 550 RANGE OF SOMETHING TO DO ANYTHING period right now, to do anything sona needs to be in low range: -her passive which is essential for her kit -her auras i know that she has no counterplay else, but that's what is wrong the nature of her kit makes riot forced to make her going into the fight to compensate the lack of counterplay I could be fine, but give me ways to survive goddamnit, i'm a squishy character with 325 base ms, without any cc (except ulti who's used either to engage or to protect an adc) W and E sucks so hard until mid game and late game for E

  1. OK i lied, or more i was wrong she doesn't need that much AP to work, her Q damage on allies and damage reduction on passive are strong without AP, What made me think of that was actually that Hymn of valor aura isn't strong when you buff one or two target, but when you buff your entire team the damage becomes incredibly strong, the other thing that made me think of this was Song of Garbage as known as Song of celerity Honestly it feels really bad man, to have this garbage in your kit Song of celerity is useless until rank 4 or 5 which means level 15 16 or 17 and honestly riot knows it but it can't be good because when it's good Sona just presses E and then says "cya nerds" and escape easily, as well as roaming incredibly on the map i remember when the rework came out, rank 1 song of celerity allowed me to come back to lane in a matter of a second, as well as roaming FROM BOT TO TOP in few seconds

  2. Hymn of valor is still garbage no matter what, by hymn of valor i mean the two bolts that hit champions not the aura honestly you don't know how sad it is to have this in your kit 2 bolts that deals 140 damage and it can't be allowed to be good because it has no counterplay

  3. level 16 is still needed no matter what, did you ever see a champion unlocking power at level 16? because there are only 2 right now in league Darius his ulti becomes resetable and doesn't cost mana anymore, but it doesn't matter because 75% of the time you just disengage and wait until your ulti is back before level 16, i mean it does matter but it's still playable Sona Going from level 15 to level 16 is gamechanging, 40% fucking cdr instead of 25%, that's the hugest power spike i ever saw and how? just by leveling up a level. Not only needing level 16 as a support is frustrating, but it's also frustrating that sometimes you fight at level 15 instead of 16 and know how the entire fight could have been changed

solution to all of this:

  1. Rework song of celerity, 100% needed change Removed: buffing sona's movement speed Bonus movement speed changed to 20% all ranks (+ ap ratio) bonus movement speed duration changed to 1.5/2/2.5/3/3.5 seconds (note: that way Song of celerity can be relevant on allies without breaking Sona) Added a new passive: whenever Sona uses power chord she gains a burst of movement speed A/B/C/D/E%(+X% AP) movement speed for Y seconds (note: this allows sona to survive but with more gameplay than pressing E, additionally fixes her roaming ability whenever song of celerity is strong)

  2. Hymn of valor needs a full scale rework i don't know what would replace it but it needs to be changed, the least thing i want when i play Sona is pressing Q without targetting anything to get trash damage: -it has no gameplay -no counterplay -no impact conclusion? doesn't bring anything to the table That's why her Q should be changed totally, why? Because i don't see any changes making her current Q more fun to use, and more difficult to use, even making it a skillshot

when you will be able to rework her Q, then she would be allowed to have a proper mana cost on W in laning phase

aria of preservence mana cost 80/85/90/95/100-------->60/70/80/90/100

  1. The cdr...., ok i have nothing against this cdr, but i propose to make it scale with all level rather than suddenly a giant massive amount of power comming to you by just going from level 15 to 16 cresendo now gives 10% cdr at level 6, and continues to give 3% cdr each level until level 16, giving a maximum of 40% at level 16

Optional changes those are changes that aren't needed but can be done to improve sona's theme 4. cresendo's active changed, i don't know about this but an enchenter revolving around auras and debuff while having no CC unlocks an ultimate giving her a small AOE cc on 140/120/100 seconds cd, changing cresendo's active may be better to improve Sona's theme and gameplay but that's only optional we can live with the current cresendo

  1. Staccato changed, for the same reason Sona is an enchenter, has a passive revolving around debuffs and here comes a passive that doesn't give her a debuff Not only this but it also gives her 40% additional damage, in my opinion Sona shouldn't be an assassin/burst mage, no way 40% bonus damage fits with sona's gameplay

tl dr: Sona's kit should be changed for more: -fitting gameplay -interaction -counterplay -increasing her skillcap to not only make her more fun to play, but to balance her properly in order to not have a win rate going to 58%

Sona is a difficult support to balance, if she's good in high elo well she dominates low elo with terror This is obviously to do with her low skill floor, after countless reworked I had hoped they would maybe hike up that floor a little but it seems like they want to keep Sona a simplistic (use wise) champion

But looking into Sonas abilities she really isn't so simplistic, her kit is jam packed with power but it's spread so thin that you can do a spam happy playstyle and be really effective

As someone who mains AP Sona I feel like her current damage is fine, her survivability is laughable in this DAMAGE X DAMAGE meta, but I guess that's where the rest of your skill is supposed to be allocated, so i'm okay with that too Her W is my least fave skill of hers with it's crazy mana cost, most other healers can top their lane partner up with ease, but Sona struggles to get a 3rd cast out if she is using it often, I feel like this ability could do more if it had more interaction, The powerchord is great though and is very unique, it's just a shame it's so hidden Her E is great for AP Sona but utility Sona it's pretty pathetic, i'm largely okay with this skill Her R is her R, can't complain about it

You hit the nail on the head with the passive CDR though, too many times I see a teamfight break out and i am less then 10% of the way to level 11/16 and it pains me to go in, also I have to resort to claiming solo XP if I am close to it because i'm fuckin Sona, I need levels

You hit my 2 biggest issues with Sona. The "you looked at me I'm dead" squishiness she has, and the 30% of max hp she can heal before going oom during the laning phase.

I don't mind a support character that is squishy, in fact I feel that's how they should be if they are caught out, but the logic behind her skill set kind of eludes me. You must be at like -50 range to cast most everything and have no escape at all. If you get slowed or stunned it's lights out in about .4 seconds. Why so squishy for needing to practically be in melee range to use her abilities?

As for the mana sink it is to heal early on, overall it's not a bad skill. In fact, if you go full support Sona it is a really good skill with windspeakers and ardent censer. The problem is like you said, during the early game. Perhaps they could modify the power chord so that it can be cast on a friendly unit. For example if you have power chord up and Aria of Perserverance is your last cast spell, it heals target ally for X + X% max hp over the next 6 seconds. Or instead of max ho you could base it off AP. Either way, that would help to sustain in lane without dumping as much mana, but would leave the ability mostly unchanged compared to late game.

Just a thought.

Riot should just hurry the fuck up and make Sona's Q a skillshot. It's what they're inevitably going to do anyway, it will stop bronzies bitching about her 'targeted' Q and they'll think it's adding counterplay even though the skillshot would almost definitely be lower counterplay than her current Q.

Ahristocats2 votes

i prefer changing her Q completly than making it a skillshot, but if it becomes a skillshot it's better than nothing

I personally suggest this: Stop tying a support's overall power to the levels on her freaking ult, WHICH IS MAXED AT LEVEL 16 OF ALL THINGS.

That's such a bullshit way to stuff power into someone's kit. It's halfway useless because you'll hardly ever tap into it.

My favorite point that you put is the power spike at level 16. Especially for supports, its RARE to even get past level 13. Are they hinting at supports taking the infamously horrible experience quints.

Ahristocats2 votes

for those who don't believe us just watch your games history and look at the level of supports then try to deduce the number of games supports can have to be level 16

Paquay1 votes

You know, I've never really stopped and thought about how rare it is that I hit 16 as support. Yep, it's pretty sad.

Luxxum1 votes

I agree with pretty much all of what you said.

This is coming from someone who's only experience with Sona is playing her pure "support" against silver-plat level players, and hasn't player her in some time, but I think her auras are inherently flawed. Having a champion be balanced around the best-case scenario of her entire team getting buffed results in the abilities feeling lackluster the other 99% of the time. Unfortunately, this probably can't be changed, since Riot most likely want to keep her auras as what makes her kit unique.

What about removing her auras from her abilities, putting them on her powerchord, and making them affect enemies instead? At least then she would have the counterplay of needing to be in the fight to be effective, and would have the added benefit of giving her very clear windows of power. Remove her self heal and make it a massive shield or something so she had a means of getting in. Not a great idea, but meh.

Ahristocats1 votes

Thing is her Auras already have window of power, and i know that riot balances her around the best scenario, and i'm fine with this honestly what could be wrong? Sona is a champion that is strong with her team nothing is wrong with that

what is wrong is what is listed above, song of celerity and hymn of valor lack of gameplay counterplay and impact

removing her self heal while increasing her shield is completly possible, because Sona's AOE SHIELD is the only unique thing she has and becomes at level 16 and high counterpick to AOE damage

Is it though? That's pretty much the role Karma's been shoehorned into at this point isn't it?

I guess that leads into Sona being similar in use to both Nami and Karma. I remember that being a big issue of contention a while back. It is still that way?

Ahristocats1 votes

well karma's AOE shield is situational, while sona's AOE shield is on 3 sec cd at level 16 and shield for like 280 or 300 with windspeaker+healing items

i don't know which one should counter aoe damage, but fact is that i can see her heal removed (because it makes her laning phase more balanceable) in exchange of more AOE shield

PokladnicaZla1 votes

Nobody wants to hear it,but one of the better solutions for a long rung balance would be: a) to make Q&W targeted abilities b) Remove her R and auras from basic abilities C) New R functions like Karma's R.Either buffs the abilities or adds new effect, but also creates an aura.

I know,I will get downvoted for this, but it's kinda true.Sona should be the enchanter time support, who buffs allies at times and if she positions right, she can secure her teams victory.

so make Sona an other karma?

hm, no thanks i want a unique champion, i prefer my ideas and if you don't agree tell me why

also make Q target doesn't solve any problems of Q

Calling Sona another Karma would be a bland statement. It's calling Heimer another Karma. The only thing they would have in common would be how their R functions.Nothing more.

Making Q a skillshot could work, but it would need to have another effect to it.Since, she is a support having a pure damage ability seems a bit unefficient.

The biggest problem is balancing her between her actives abilities and auras, but also how many allies she affects with it. If you remove her auras from her abilities and add them to her let's say R.They can actually have visible power that feels good to play as,with and against.IMO

Also, please note that I'm just saying my opinion, because it's a discussion.I'm not claimimg my opinion is right or that yours is wrong.Giving more views on one issue can help resolve it in more than one way.

Ahristocats1 votes

Heimer is a siege mage and karma is a support, they have nothing in common

Sona and karma are both enchenters, that's why making their kit working the same way is a terrible idea

Her auras are balanced around enchenting 4 allies, and i'm fine with this i don't care about her being weak in laning phase or 1v1 as long as her teamfight is strong which should be her niche since she is, AHEM, an aura support

PokladnicaZla1 votes

The thing Heimer and Karma have in common is that their Rs work in the same way.

Karma is currently more of mage than support, also the only buffs she can give is her E.

The argument ˝I don't care˝isn't really valid, since RIOT balances this game for more people than just you.

Ahristocats1 votes

you didn't understand, what i said by "i don't care" is Sona is fine while being balanced around buffing 4 people this is the niche of an aura support
