Because you took Support

Nope, didnt change a thing.

you lie

Dreadlocks8 votes

actually no, i was que'd as Top/Jg, my friend was Mid/ADC and we waited 13 mins and we were both wtf'ing so we restarted queue and right away a match was found.

Kanzler13 votes

I can't explain why it does that, but I always just restart the queue after 2 minutes for that reason

High52 votes

Same. Never trusted the new system. Feels like it forgets about you sometimes.

I always requested after 2-3 mins too. When that stopped working a few weeks ago, I quit the game.

Weiner the Pooh2 votes

This's problem occurred even with the old system.

Kanzler1 votes

Never had this problem with the old queue.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queueing_theory

This is truth, we the programmers specially the gaming programmers use this theory. Uses the logic, and plays with any objet you have close to you. Builds your own queue, with assumptions... try to put 1 supp per queue and obviously builds more than 3 or 4 querys.

If you hang 13 minutes in queue you literally lock the queue, please try to refresh the queue, and all can read this and the theory used in the game code.

(Sorry for my bad english)

Riot already said this is a bug and they're planning on fixing it this patch.

Basically, the system is putting together groups of 10 players. But once it starts making a group, that's a group, and it will only add players to that group who are just entering the queue.

So if you have a group of 9 that needs an adc, and a group of 9 that needs a support that are both at the same elo, if it were coded differently the system could take the support from the first group, move them to the second group, and the 2nd group's queue will pop. But instead both groups just sit around waiting for someone new to queue for adc or support.

Here's the real problem, though: say an adc & support duo start looking for a group. If it could swap between groups like above, then there's be an open botlane to put the duo in. But since it can't, it starts another group.

Basically what this means is that queueing as a premade forces the creation of a new group quite a bit, and you end up with a lot of groups waiting for different people, that could all be full if they swapped around, but as it is are stuck waiting for solos in specific roles.

Say you're the support in the first group. When you leave the queue and rejoin, the system isn't that dumb; instead of putting you back where you were, it'll put you in the group that needs a support to start, and you get an instant queue.

Just wanted to say that the system putting you back into the exact same group would actually be smart of the system, as that means it's retaining more information and utilizing it, as well as being more complex in general.

Of course, sometimes a dumber system is more appropriate, especially when the smarter system really wouldn't have any benefits for how much more effort and computing power it would take. This is one of those times where there's actually nothing but drawbacks to a smarter system.

I guess you can say that while a smarter system is always smarter, it isn't always smarter of you to add a smarter system.

I guess we're using different definitions of smart.

I'm talking about "the decision that makes the most progress towards the goal" where in this case the goal is to get people into balanced games as quickly as possible, while minimizing variance in queue time.

Complexity and intelligence are different things. I could have a system that remembers which group you're in, and decides to put you back in the same group, or one that remembers which group you were in and puts you in the other group. I'd argue the second one is the smarter system, because it's getting you in game more quickly.

Atanchan1 votes

Thing is, I don't think League's system does that. I imagine it's perfectly capable of plunking you right back into that group as soon as you queue again, as long as the gap hasn't already been filled. It's just pure improbability that prevents that.

... unless you were grouped with DoToT previously.

And, yeah, your definition is more goal-orientated while I'm thinking in terms of how much, well, thinking the code actually has to do. In the example you brought up, the latter would probably have to smarter in both cases because it's not only remembering which group you were previously in, while it's deciding which group to put you in there's an extra check to make sure the group that's currently being tested isn't that previous group. When it comes to what I think it's actually like and one that remembers and puts you into your previous group, though, there's definitely a disconnect - though I still pointed out in my previous post that what may be a smarter system under my definition still isn't necessarily smart in terms of what you want to accomplish.

I guess the main difference is that I'm separating the code and the goal, while you're combining the two. Which I think might stem from either a difference in programming experience ( I'm a bit of a hobbyist, while you might just enjoy the fruits of programming ) or just the difference between a philosopher's and an engineer's thinking.

Always restart the queue after 7 minutes. Typically, you will find games within a couple minutes.

RisenDarkKnight9 votes

This has been an issue for a long time. Unless you are plat or above, queue times should never be above 10 minutes. If you go past 10 mins, just restart the queue.

Bobloser35552 votes

I was over 30 mins in Bronze but then it did find a game.

RisenDarkKnight1 votes

You probably would have had a shorter wait if you restarted the queue. 30 mins is a really long time considering around 35% of the ranked playerbase is also in bronze so there should have been plenty of possible opponents.

LOL 10 minutes queue time for plat... xD. Plat's not that good.

RisenDarkKnight1 votes

Yeah my b I'm only Gold IV so IDK how long queue times can get for Plat 1 players.

TheThundersRoar4 votes

Because it's a damn bug. Nobody gets it, and threads about 'long queue times' just keep coming up.

Queues don't take longer than 4-5 minutes. Just restart for a quick queue.

Remlap12232 votes

IDK why it just gives up.

Hard Penetrator4 votes

"I tried to find ppl to play with you but nobody likes you, seriously. Just spend rest of eternity watching this timer."

Cookimonster3162 votes

That's what you experience but higher ranked players experience higher queue times and restarting doesn't help.

DarkRitual1 votes

It's not a bug, it's just how it works right now. Here's the deal on it: Games only look for players freshly ENTERING queue to fill matches up. When someone dodges or doesn't accept the AFK check, you're put back into the queue, at the same place in line that you were.

Riot has said this, and they (at the time) stated they planned to fix this, mostly for the benefit of higher elo matches to help lower queue times.

TheThundersRoar1 votes

Can I have a source on that, if possible? I wanna read it for myself, because that sounds like an idiotic way to run a queue.

DarkRitual1 votes

I'll try to find it but I don't recall the exact phrasing to search for.

This actually happens to me as well.

Naag One2 votes

hmm

found some new info in this thread. longest queue I've seen was 22 minutes...in around Silver 3-4.

It still takes me average 8-10 minutes to find a game. I'll try re queue at 3+ minutes from now on

The Deckowner2 votes

I thought it's well-known that the system is bugged as fuck and everyone knows this exist?

SirSmokeysAlot2 votes

The queue is screwy sometimes. If I go over 5 minutes I always restart queue.

Rand0mH3r0X1 votes

When you disconnect from PVP.net, it keeps you in the que but no longer looking for a game. This happens a lot to me, and their suggestion was to disable IP Helper. DIsabling IP Helper didn't help me, but opening the ports did as my ISP sometimes throttled me for anything but YouTube.

If you want to know how to do that, just que in a wrenchman or go to the support page.

It happens because the algorithm for matchmaking if really awful. A Rioter explained it at one point.

Basically, when someone joins the queue, it assigns them to a game being constructed. It then has to wait for people of the appropriate MMR to fill the remaining slots. Those games will often also have premade groups in them, so it has to wait for a premade group of roughly equal skill to place on the other team (since it's supposed to match premades with premades.)

The problem comes from the fact that players are assigned to a single game when they join the queue, which potentially might not see players for a very long time. Imagine that you queue up and get placed as the single player in a team of 4. That game is going to take forever to get made, because it has to find another team of four of similar MMR to complete it, even though there are tons of other solo players or smaller groups entering the queue.

The logical algorithm would be to look at all of the players in the queue once a second, starting with the ones who have been in the queue longest (and starting with their primary role), and trying to build a game out of those players in real time, based on MMR. That would be much more computation than the current method, of course, but it would be possible to optimise the algorithm by having various separate queues based on rough MMR brackets and then only needing to processes those independently. With such an algorithm, the queue would pop pretty much immediately as soon as enough suitable players were in the queue, and no one would get stuck waiting forever.

My mind boggles at how they were able to come up with the actual algorithm used, though.

Only Play Darius1 votes

Logical solution is to scrap dyamic queue if premades are causing all this

Nameless Voice1 votes

It's only tangentially caused by dynamic queue, though. The proper solution would be to fix the algorithm.

Blåbæret1 votes

The queue is bugged to death. Just re-queue if the queue lasts for more than 5min. I usually re-queue after 2-3min and it works.

Vladivostok RU1 votes

The biggest issue is most premades don't pick support so queues are really filled with people queueing as mid/top/jung/bot but not enough supports to even it out.

Dreadlocks1 votes

if u have 4 ppl, u have to have 1 person pick support. Or fill? not 100% on the fill

PbJMpP4xzk1 votes

ur a lucky dude man, i restarted my queue at 44minutes i tought it was bugged you know... then i queued back took me 53 minutes to find a game

were you playing dominion?

PbJMpP4xzk1 votes

what is that ?

mikemcparty2 votes

To this day, some still believe it as a myth. Sit down and let me tell you a story, my friend... Once, there used to be a game mode that was different than summoners' rift. A game mode in which, you could navigate your champion around, get this, a circular map. I know. You may already be in disbelief, but let me continue. This game mode was overrun by bots and scripters farming level 30 accounts and people trying to get "refer a friend" rewards (another myth) or to sell to lazy 12 year olds. In this mode, you could walk around, shoot some weird energy tether at poles in the ground, and gain points. It was basically like a 5th ability, but it doesn't do anything and the animations looked like shit. Also, in this mythical game mode, there was less champion diversity than there is today on the rift. It was so beautiful. You could go into a game and there was a guarantee you would see a katarina or some other faceroll champion. It was the definition of balance.

Ultimately, Riot realized they didn't want to spend time supporting a game mode that only 10 people in all of NA play, so they removed it.

A very sad day for those 10 players. Many said they would never return to league, but here they are. Still playing because they are addicted to a video game.

Edit: I'm still talking about dominion.

TLDR: dominion is a shit game mode.

My favorite is when im in queue for less than 30 seconds and yet get placed in my secondary role. If the system doesn't prioritize your primary role before your secondary why even have them labled as primary/secondary?

Rico Nasty1 votes

I think it's a bug?? One time I was waiting for queue and I sorta spaced out and took a nap, woke up i was STILL in queue for like almost 40 min. Re-queued, took 15 seconds to find a match for the exact same roles!! wtf??

Vekkna1 votes

Yeah, it does this all the time. It seems to occur most frequently if a queue pops and is declined or if someone dodges from lobby. In other words, it seems to have a problem with putting you back into queue.

If the timer goes over the estimated wait time by 30 seconds, I drop and requeue. It works literally every time.
