Pre-season in any other profession

In any other profession on the planet, if I periodically updated my product and turned it into a total mess outraging a significant portion of my player base I would instantly be fired and replaced.

I am dumbfounded how this was released. Yes I know it's day 1, but that is really no excuse for it to be THIS BAD. Were the games you allegedly performed in internal testing this snowbally? Were you ok with that? Is that what you wanted? Did you not realize how much of a mess it was? You mean to tell me you internally tested this and the loss of defensive stats through loss of runes on a number of champions didn't go noticed? NO ONE on your team realized starting the game with 30 mr in lane against a bully mage was awful? No one? Are you really telling me the games you CLAIM to have performed internally had people knocking on inhibs at 15 minutes and what? You didn't feel this was a problem? Or is this the sort of gameplay you desire to have?

That it's day 1 is irrelevant. This is SO BLATANTLY AND OBVIOUSLY a mess it makes the balance team look incompetent.

I don’t think it’s a total mess. And it’s not really a significant portion of the player base - keep in mind that the player base includes millions of players who don’t ever come to the boards. Statistics show that generally the “voiced opinion” of a non-random portion of a population will always be more extreme, and usually slightly negative compared to the actual opinion of the population as a whole (this is known as [voluntary] response bias - those in the center/who like the change have no reason to respond commenting on it).

Balance in League of legends is literally more complicated than 90% of other professions. They intentionally buffed defensive stats on certain champions (along with some other stats) to make up for the loss of the room. Starting with MR is not awful, it’s called opportunity cost - would I rather start with MR against my lane opponent or would I rather use that rune slot to use something else that’s more offensive.

Your (and others) inability to adapt to the variability of this new system does not mean the system is a failure nor a mess. League is always a game of “known and unknown” - you know what the abilities of the champion you’re going against are, but you generally never really knew what runes they had or how they’d affect them - yeah you can look them up but nobody ever did. Further, you don’t know in what order they’re going to take ability points, or buy items, or how those items will affect the lane. This just made a different set of “unknowns” for you to have to take into account - do they have offensive runes, or sustain runes, or defensive runes, or utility runes, and of those classes which runes do they actually have, and how will that affect me.

Nice long post.

Drop the Rumsfeld style 'known and unknown' lectures. You sound pretentious.

You buffed damage and lowered defenses. That's going to cause significant and obvious balance issues and is obviously predictable.

I didn’t buff anything. Riot did.

They didn’t buff damages - you’re able to take the defensive runes just as much as anyone else is. Your choice to ignore the new runes and assume that everything will always be balanced in the exact same way is not Riot’s fault.

They didn’t change the balance of the scales but a very tiny amount. They simply moved the scales from Texas to Florida (a very long distance) as to where the center of the balance is.

They probably tested it, saw the obvious problems your mentioning and did something shocking... they kept testing it. Then folks adapted and games got less snowball when players stopped trying to play stupid aggressive. My expectation is that live will follow suit, like it has done every single year.

Name a profession where you realize that a core piece of your old practices/product needs to be updated/replaced and that replacement process goes smoothly day 1. You won't be able to.

Honestly, this preseason feels less problematic than other preseasons I've seen. Yes, new runes are crazy and change the game, but we haven't seen 100% pick/ban champions yet, nor have we had to completely relearn Jungle, nor anything of the sort.

Yes, things aren't dialed in quite right, but no one was expecting them to be.
