Alright, is Evelynn's ult broken on purpose or....?

There is a significant delay between the time you use Agony's Embrace and the time you get the shield. First Evelynn has to go through sort of a casting motion, at which another delay during which the spikes appear beneath the target, even after this another delay occurs between the spikes causing damage and the shield actually triggering.

To say that I've died often in between the time I pressed R but before I got the shield would be a colossal understatement. For what purpose is Evelynn's ultimate the only shield in the game that has this unbelievably huge delay ? is this intentional or is it some kind of horrible bug?

And for the inevitable "You just suck at Evelynn-ing" comments; http://www.lolskill.net/summoner/NA/Dominick%20Destine/champions Here's my champion performance, taken from a bulk/majority of Diamond level matches. I know how to play Evelynn extremely well, the ult is just bugged as hell or at least coded to be the worst reacting shield in the entire game by a tremendous margin.

Edit: Thank you to Adria Umbra for digging up patch 4.1 Agony's Embrace change, here is a quote by Riot;

We also cleaned up the response time of Agony’s Embrace – it feels pretty bad for Evelynn to die before the shield but after the cast.

THAT STILL HAPPENS A LOT. This bug is not intentional, Agony's Embrace is not meant to have a horrible delay the way it does.

I would guess that it is further encouragement to use it at the beginning of a fight as an opening move rather than at the end to turn around close duels. If you're getting 1 shot from full health before the shield kicks in, you probably just need to pick better fights.

If Eve's ult still has a delay, then this is a bug. She used to have a purposeful delay, one that would supposedly balance out the idea of an assassin having a powerful defensive steroid, but this was removed back in patch 4.1 to compensate for the nerfs to her Q missile speed and her E damage type change, in addition to the fact that it just felt awful.

Please do not defend a bug as an intentional part of the champion's kit, especially over wording. If this is intentional, then it was an unmarked revert of what was intended to be a quality of life improvement.

If Eve's ult still has a delay

It does. I can 100% absolutely positively guarantee it.

I remember that change... it didn't do anything, the delay still exists... or if it did, it was only a slight improvement rather than a fix.

Wouldn't have known, it's been months since I've felt masochistic enough to play Eve with all the bizarre balance changes that have been aimed at the champion over the past couple of seasons. From what I remember, the delay was indeed fixed at that point (not like I did any thorough testing on it, just from my experiences), as I never had a post-ult death without getting my shield. Like I said, though, it's not like I was playing much Eve at that point, so I'd trust your experiences over mine.

But if you really want this fixed, go report it on the bug forums. This should not be happening in the current release of the game, is not an intended gameplay element, and should have been fixed a while back. In other words, this is a bug and should be reported and fixed as such.

Evelynn is still an assassin. Or at least can burst non tank enemy champions in lightning fast fashion.

That's referring to instantly after the particles return to her, instead of an additional delay even after that happens.

Adrian Umbra1 votes

...I'm not sure if you're clueless or just not thinking straight. The old delay WAS Eve's particles returning to her and the general consensus by the fanbase and Riot is that delayed defensive steroids on a high cooldown ultimate that was meant to be rewarding clutch use just felt awful. There never was an additional delay and if there was, that would have run counter to the stated goals of the change I linked.

It says right in those patchnotes that the shield used to happen 0.5 seconds after the particles returned to her.

"Evelynn SIPHON's her victims' pain, shielding herself for up to 6 seconds for every enemy champion hit by Agony's Embrace." It is intended to have a delay you can actually see the lines moving towards you of the enemies "pain" I personally hardly notice the delay as if you get a good ult they are not going to react in time for the shield to get to you.

Kassadin and Viktor have similar mechanics and both of theirs are instant once the shield portion of the skill achieves its target.

Evelynn's shield comes with multiple delays.

This isn't the first time people have complained about a delay on the shield. Before patch 4.1, the shield procced at the END of the spell rather than immediately. Idk, maybe a glitch in the coding changed it back to that way it used to be and that's what you're experiencing. With the repeated unjustifiable nerfs that Meddler personally made to her, I've abandoned playing her completely, so I wouldn't know whether this is the problem you're referring to or not. Or who knows, they might've reverted it intentionally and in secret, it wouldn't be the first shadow nerf Rito has done.

Evelynn's shield comes with multiple delays.

"The excess energy forms around Kassadin granting him a shield" "Viktor shields himself for 2.5 seconds"

It's all in the wording it states evelynn siphons which means she is taking something from the enemy so it has to travel back to her, like kindred passive, where as on viktor and kassadin it doesnt state that. Kassadins ability leaves excess energy when it fires making a shield, and viktor shields himself instantly when firing the Q.

Because Kassadin and viktor are meant to use those abilities in the middle of battle to turn around a trade

Evelynn is meant to use her ult to initiate a fight with a big advantage to put the enemy on the run.

Irrelevant.

The mechanics must be consistent.

No, actually, they don't. Champions working differently from each other is kind of an incredibly important part of this game.

Not to mention that riot simply doesn't want Evelynn to have a massive defensive steroid available on demand like that. They do not want this to be an ability she fires to save herself, but one she uses to start a fight. If the shield appeared instantly she would instead save the ability to use defensively.

There's a big difference between champion distinctions and straight-up botching mechanics.

It's not complicated.

There's a big difference between champion distinctions and straight-up botching mechanics.

There is, but there's nothing botched about this. Riot has adjusted the timing for when the shield appears and it's clear that the delay is intentional or else they would have made it instant a long time ago. This is a different ability with a different purpose and different mechanics than the ones you're comparing it to and the idiosyncracies between the abilities are intentional, just like how Diana's Q has a weird arc shape that is asymmetrical unlike most other skillshots like Karma's Q or Ezreal's W.

Then explain why they adjusted the timing to only make the shield appear when the spell particles made contact with evelynn instead of just making it instant.

That Riot hasn't noticed for over 3 years even when they looked closely at the spell's effects to adjust the timing of it?

Do you realize that it's much more difficult to program the ability so Evelynn has a delayed shield than for it to be instant? They had to go out of their way to make the ability work like it does.

That doesn't seem like the sort of thing that would be intentional, more likely just some weird coding or something, it's not like it provides any counter play, just makes the champion feel clunky. I haven't really noticed much of a delay on the ability myself, but I don't really play much eve, with my playstyle I probably wouldn't really be focusing on the shield anyway.

It is definitely intentional and has been this way for a long time. There are spell particles showing the energy traveling from her opponents to herself and those particles hitting her syncs up the the shield appearing.

Vekkna1 votes

They could clarify the intent of the ability by adding an instant base shield that scales off of Evelynn's current HP or missing HP. If it's supposed to be an engage tool then reward using it at max hp. If it's supposed to be a clutch life-saver then reward using it at low hp.

Then add a cap to the total shield values equal to a 5-enemy hit. So if you get a big initial shield, your pain siphon shield won't give you full value if you hit 5 targets.

Riot, I am hoping you will address this horrendous Evelynn ultimate skill bug.
