What is the point of Kayn's transformation being EITHER Blue or red?

Before you downvote this because I'm mentioning Kayn, its just a question.

FROM A GAME DESIGN PERSPECTIVE, what is the purpose of kayn have to pick between transformations based on damage done to melee users or ranged? Why not just let him pick whichever form he wants when he's able to transform.

With the average game lasting 27 ish minutes, and Kayn's average transformation time being around the 13-14 minute mark, and a 4 minute timer to pick the OTHER form if you don't get it right away. You're looking at a potential 18 minutes being base kayn, which is relatively useless in comparison to either of the transformed kayns.

My question is what is the purpose of forcing kayn to wait that 4 minutes for a different form? It seems like if you give him a choice of either transformation when he unlocks it, that gives the champion a couple more minutes being useful in games that are getting shorter and shorter by the season.

Also, Why would they design him like that, vs a level requirement (8-9?), or a flat damage amount to enemy champions?

And yes, I understand that the Kayn player should be looking at the enemy team comp to see what form he's likely to get when he transforms at 14 mins. (a mostly ranged team will likely yeild blue kay, mostly melee will be red.)

If your average transformation time is 13-14 minutes, you're doing something wrong. Getting your form at 9 minutes is not rare after his passive buff.

I don't play him much. I was just watching some youtube vids on him, and seemed like the transformation always occurred around 13 minutes.

because as has been stated that is his play style. and the only part you ever have to worry about is who the first person you attack is when you get the passive filled up. none of it beforehand matters whatsoever. You can fill it 99.9999% with ranged champs and go auto top lane melee champ once to get red form. Play around what you want to be. Its almost impossible to be against a full melee or full ranged team and if you are in those situations more than likely the form you get is best suited to that situation(ie ranged champs tend to be squishier and melee tankier). Just play around your passive like most champs in the game have to and its not a problem. And as Ray701 mentioned if it takes you 13-14 minutes you are obviously doing something wrong. Kayn can get passive in early as 7 minutes if played properly. Latest I've done since the buff was around 12 minutes. And thats at the VERY LATEST(he's my most played champ in ranked too atm).

Oh I didn't know that. I don't play him much. Just watched some youtube vids on him, and most were transforming around 13 minutes.

Thanks for the explanation on his ult too, I thought it was 2 separate values you were filling up, one for blue kayn, one for red.

You partly answered you're question already by saying that you choose form based on the match. His form is based on how much damage you deal and not time-wise because thats his playstyle and often win condition. If you play well enough and try to get that early damage in and possibly kills, you can get form at an even earlier time and dominate, especially if you are blue kayn who as already done relatively well beforehand. Theres a timer for one of the forms because like i said hes designed in the way that its up to you how you play him, if you want to focus on getting assassin and being a damage carry then gank the ranged champs and vice versa

Wait did they change it? Kayn used to trasnform based on THE LAST GUY HE DAMAGED. when did they make it to be based on total damage to mele/ranged?

it is neither of those. it is simply the FIRST champion he attacks from the battle in which he gains passive. Example: i have 95% of my passive. i engage on bot but attack the leona first. i do enough damage to her and the ad(doent matter which) that i gain my passive. because i damaged leona first i gain red form even though the ad was the last champ i attacked. it dosent matter who comes after that either if say the kindred or sion jgs come in. it will always be red form in that case. same case in reverse. if i attack the ad first then leo i gain blue form. no matter who i attack after. in either case the first 95% means literally nothing at all and has no affect on which form i gain
