Getting counter picked sucks, but most of the time you can adjust your play style to stay alive. Sometimes its better to switch lanes to solve the problem, or to play safe. You can roam for kills/asst and you can farm to keep up.
I hate getting counter picked but it isn't an auto lose.

vs 
. Unless you're willing to lane from 2nd tier turret, you will die over and over again as Vladimir to a decent Swain.
It's just a symptom of older Champion design and the subsequent interaction.
