Re-upvoting Mercy System

SP Dodgecity··211 votes·4,651 views

I played a game in my series where the enemy had two people rage and DC.... 3v5... the other team kept fighting and trying to keep up but its practically impossible.

I saw a post about it but I agree, in that situation, those who quit should be punished, and the team that still has 5 players should be able to vote to give mercy. Mercy just relieves the amount of LP lost to maybe 50% less LP loss and if you're in your series matches, it shouldn't count against you.

OF COURSE THOSE WHO QUIT should lose the exact amount of LP they should or more for quiting.

You literally have nothing in your control to turn that match around, 2 team mates quit in the first 10 min. Its no way in your power to change that and it shouldn't penalize you.

Its like getting -10 LP for getting hit by a car that ran a red light....

EDIT: Something else to point out. The option to vote for mercy would have to meet specific criteria, I would like to hear from the community what criteria you think would be the best for a mercy system like this. I was thinking that those who DC have to have been disconnected for a certain amount of time, and the option to vote for mercy would only come up after the match is finished. So right after getting "victory" you would have to vote yes or no before getting to the end match screen. Just an idea, let me know what your ideas are!

i had one game a long time ago around season 2 where me and 2 of my friends ran a 3v5 ( our bot lane rage quit) and we Won mind you teemo trund and kat is a very strong 3 man team and season 2 was a way different time BUT the mercy system is the BEST idea ive heard in a long time and with the way games snowball now if you loose 2 its done so 100% support and ill have my friends jump on and give support as well that is all

SP Dodgecity2 votes

Thanks, haha it wasn't my idea I won't take credit for it but I think it should cycle through so riot can see that its something that is needed, thanks for your support :D

The car scenarios is not a proper comparison. There is no winner regardless the outcome, only 2 dead bodies.

LoL ranked is zero-sum, one party will gain at the other's expense. So you come to a baseball game and find out that your buddy was hit by a car, should the organizer refund your fees and pay the other participants out of pocket because...it's not your fault that your teammate could not make it?

Nilok5 votes

Of it was a person from the crowed, no, but if 2/5th of the team didn't show, you can bet the game would be canceled and rescheduled.

SH Azykan3 votes

actually it is just a forfeit, they lose by default

Ego Sum Redemit2 votes

And the entire team gets punished for the actions of the few, welcome to reality. Its a scenario that will come up in every facet of life. People are pretty crappy when it come to reliability, just the way the cookie crumbles sometimes.

Akeydel3 votes

Sure, thats how it is. But why? it doesnt have to be like that in this game. Thats what the post is about, trying to improve

Ego Sum Redemit1 votes

{quoted}

LoL ranked is zero-sum, one party will gain at the other's expense.

This is why. The system is balanced in a way that means for anyone to gain LP, someone has to lose LP. Technically, there is a finite amount of LP out in the world, it is neither created nor destroyed, so someone has to gain and someone has to lose for the system to work. If you start changing that, the system will get out of balance and literally ranking will be useless.

SH Azykan2 votes

well there is negative lp for dodging, and challengers continue to gain lp at higher ranks all throughout the season and I know for a fact people can gain more for wins than the enemy team loses. So LP is always inflating but is counteracted by dodges and people in promotion series to an extent (you don't gain more)

Zeke Maelstorm2 votes

Then make the loser lose all the LP for the team.

Ariel the Cruel4 votes

I'm not going to take a position for or against this idea. But it may be worth your time to address Riot's stated reason for avoiding systems like this.

If the losing team is punished less because of 1 or 2 afk's (even though the afk's are punished more), it encourages toxic behavior. If the game looks like a potential loss, they will be inclined to turn on each other in hopes of driving team mates to quit.

God Went MIA3 votes

Oh ya because the game's already such a nice and friendly place. I've never seen anyone tell someone to uninstall before.

Ariel the Cruel2 votes

Your sarcastic statement only supports their claim. If people are toxic without incentive, they'll be worse with incentive.

Pokku1 votes

Would anyone actually quit because of flaming team mates, though? I don't remember anyone quitting due to flame despite some threatening to do so. If I'm ever flamed to the point I'd want to quit, I just mute the flamers.

Ariel the Cruel2 votes

Yes. I've seen it done. though those who have weren't exactly saints, either.

And the point isn't whether or not people would quit. It's whether or not their teammates would try to make them. A system like this would incentivize them to try. Which is Riot's stated reason for not doing it.

Again; I'm not for or against the idea (I don't even play ranked). But if people are genuinely interested in creating a discussion to support the idea, then Riot's position should be addressed.

Parceval1 votes

You underestimate the solution. If this were implemented you could have a series of careful rules.

  1. AFK for X% of the game.''
  2. No mercy before Y minutes.''''
  3. The proportion of lp saved by the team is split between increased punishment to the offending player(s) AND decreased gain by the mercy team.
  4. The afk player(s) MUST have sufficient history of bad behavior such that they are 'eligible' for punishment lp (so as not to punish the rare power failure) OR have clearly demonstrated troll-behavior as identified by their system (kda/rage words/clicked "yes I'm leaving"/etc).

''The x% of the game could vary, and it could be a multiple like: ((numAfkPlayers)(timeAfk))/totalGameTime ''''Perhaps same as surrender timer.

As a corollary idea: You could even treat it like a 'report' feature. Where at the end of the game it says "MERCY OFFERED" and nothing actually changes about the stats. But if the system finds that Mercy was appropriate, it adjusts mmr (or perhaps even actual lp) accordingly.

Ariel the Cruel1 votes

You underestimate the solution.

No. I really don't. I entirely withhold opinion on the matter - partly because it has no affect on me [as proposed].

The OP made (re-posted rather) a proposal that directly went against Riot's stated position. If they want the proposal to be taken seriously, then they need to address why Riot has been shot down similar ideas in the past.

  1. The proportion of lp saved by the team is split between increased punishment to the offending player(s) AND decreased gain by the mercy team.

This would discourage the other team from granting mercy, which would seem to contradict the initial goal. (Unless I'm reading it wrong.)

NotSpecialDude2 votes

I'm mixed about this. On the one hand I agree that teams screwed by afks and dcs should get some form of slack, but the potential for abuse makes it clear why there is a deadlock on the issue.

I'd have two solutions, but I doubt they be efficient.

1.) Have every match with a dc be reviewed by the tribunal automatically to see if they left due to abuse. 2.) Have every player from both teams vote whether mercy should be granted. But have the vote only initiated by the enemy team.

Ariel the Cruel2 votes

2.) Have every player from both teams vote whether mercy should be granted. But have the vote only initiated by the enemy team.

What reason would the receiving team ever have to not accept mercy? Vote yes: reduced LP loss. Vote no: Full LP loss.

Worst case, they heap more punishment on some random player they never knew [, possibly didn't play with,] and will likely never run into again.

NotSpecialDude1 votes

That's why I said they were inefficient. i was just throwing out a few ideas. Heres another: mercy is only applied if the dc has been out for 15 mins or the entire game.

OneSmoothDude1 votes

So because toxicity levels are above 0, Riot shouldn't worry about increasing it?

JayHog19923 votes

For me, when the enemy rages or leaves the game, I feel bad that they're losing not from one team being more skilled or more lucky, it's because some dumbfuck decided to make their team's lives a living hell.

Because I can't choose how to end the match better for the enemy, all I can do is finish quick so I can spare them the pain of a delayed match that's pretty much lost. I feel bad for those people, I once had to call a truce on an enemy because my supposed laner decided to lane swap and face our mid laner than me. Another day, I was praised by 4 people on the enemy team because my laner decided to rage quit, even when it was MY fault he rage quitted.

I try to do the right thing, but there's only so much I can do...

ltmetal3 votes

Sad to say, the mercy system will never be implemented. Here is a series of boards responses by Slumber Jack stating that Riot doesn't see the mercy system as a viable option.

TheDevice3 votes

Yeah this doesnt sound good at all lol

So what if your team just so happened to get 2 dc's even though you knew they were coming right back?

But instead of them having a chance to log back in, the enemy team quickly votes for mercy, giving them and easy win....

How would this work exactly? You're just saying "give them mercy" without adding any actual details other than losing less LP.

Some specifics will be needed; otherwise everyone is just upvoting for emotional sympathy about understanding that situation.

Drehirth1 votes

yea, your last part of your post is exactly how I feel about this. Definitely do not want this especially because this can be abused with dynamic to insanely boost your rank by getting a friend to quit if you are losing a game in your series...

SP Dodgecity1 votes

Yall got it all wrong haha, the mercy option only opens up at the end of the game after its been finished. So if 1-2 DC for like more than 10 min. THen you would get the option to vote after the nexus was destroyed.

Of course people would abuse it the way you described it.

Joe Dredd2 votes

This system just adds excess LP. No real point in it.

Supreme Senpai692 votes

Would anyone like. Use it? Had a game where our Annie didn't connect because their cat unplugged their computer. She came back 5-10 minutes later and apologized and we told her to just farm and it was okay.

But her laner was a LeBlanc. And everytime the Annie was alive, the LeBlanc would W under our tower and murder the Annie and leave. Eventually the Annie gave up on trying to CS and just tried to soak some EXP by standing near-ish the minions as they died. The LeBlanc would literally W-Flash to get to her and ignored farm all game and just focused on killing Annie.

People are dicks :/

Sadistic Beast2 votes

This system sounds easy to abuse. What stops people from just voting for mercy every game? To stop over-inflation of LP, you'd need to "punish" the people giving mercy in some way... like reducing the LP they get for giving mercy. And nobody would want to take that just to give the enemy mercy. That's why a mercy system wouldn't work.

Never gonna happen. When will you nubs learn?

And the enemies have no incentive to "give mercy" to you anyway.

You'd be surprised. I've had plenty of teams and games where we would.

Numb3rs2 votes

i like the idea but im pretty sure 95% of the time this happens the enemy would be like "lol fuck you"

Parceval1 votes

I doubt it. Would have to be a 9/8/7, whatever, person vote.

i agree because im tired of my team disconnecting and me losing LP for it

Don't play ranked. Now LP aren't a factor. ;p

THOSE WHO QUIT SHOULD GET A NICE PERMABAN!!! NOTHING LESS Oh, and a MAC address ban if the hardware is a personal gear and not a net cafe

4th Chiming Lamb1 votes

It's not always in their control, mate. I have ComCast, and my internet drinks digital bleach every once in a while. Someonetimes I know when it's going to happen and don't play, and sometimes it happens in the middle of a match.

VasilisGreen1 votes

I am very precise with my words... And.. i did say quit... Quiting means, leaving the game, for whatever reason but intentionaly. I don't care if you are frustrated or your gf wants to blow you, if you quit, you deserve the ban.

Having internet problems is something else. That's not quiting. I said quit. And if riot wants they can easily implement a system to monitor your actions during game and whatever you do in-client to determine wether you had internet problems or not.

I have no idea why people are making such a big deal of why or not they should implement this Idea of a AFK system in League, its a pretty basic idea in a large part of MOBA's. I believe it will be a matter of time before one is implemented in this game. This is my idea how the AFK system should/would roughly look like:

First, make the penalty for purposely leaving ranked games much greater then purposely leaving bots or normal games (ex: after a offense or 2, they would be given a multiple day ban and would quickly escalate further). I hate to say this since I get pretty salty when people leave in my normal games, but honesty the impact is far less then what It can do in ranked. This in itself would prevent a sizable sum of AFK's from occurring with the fear of penalty.

In addition, a system is implemented that detects when a person(s) is AFK for a certain amount of time (This is Riot's choice how they want to handle the exact times/# of people before the system is activated). When activated, there will be a vote similar to a surrender where the remaining people on the effected team can vote to preemptively end the game. When the team agrees to end the game, they "surrender". However, the game is counted as a loss prevented and no one losses or gains LP (This part is also Riots choice where they can do the exact "who gets what LP"). If people on either team are in a series, then the game is not counted towards that series.

This is only a idea on what it should look like but it would be up to Riot to implement this the way they like. In any case, implementing ANY AFK system would take a ton of time and programming on Riot's part and it would be some time before we would see it. However, the payoff would be enormous, as thousands upon thousands of people wouldn't be screwed over by trolls or ragers causing them to lose potentially weeks of progress in their ranked games. I feel that my idea is a little generous towards the players but they deserve to enjoy the game and the effort they put into the game.

XerXesX1 votes

this http://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/player-behavior-moderation/dq9R8E7t-dump-comm-ban-create-toxic-troll-ban

would fix all that, you would take that ONE loss, but the culprits and ONLY the culprits would be punished, and would eventually not be able to play anymore, or get their act together their choice, either way, we would all be free to TRY to win again, without playing 3 vs 7Jhin

Lord Galvatron1 votes

Honestly, I find this solution too…….general for my tastes. There are too many factors to account for, and it also doesn't address the problem of the initial damage being created. The major point of my solution is to prevent players from getting screwed over by other players, whether they be ragers or trolls. For addressing the trolls themselves (whomever), that is a whole other problem, and I leave that to Riot to solve.

SociopathFriend1 votes

I had that in one of my Ranked matches when I did my promos this season. (Dude how come you never play ranked?) 3v5's are just a waste of everyone's time.

Snow Tea1 votes

yea maybe if one guy afks more than 8 mins the mercy system should be triggered?

Banuvan1 votes

I think the punishment for those that leave should be harsher. 2 or 3 times the normal LP loss would be good. It's too bad Rito has Lyte and we all know how dumb he is with this shit.

Occams Raiser1 votes

I just want the game to end in cases like that.

Bolwinkel1 votes

on the pbe there is this /eq thing that will allow your team to vote to equalize the teams. It won't add players but it gives gold and towers back or something haven't seen it in action myself, i just have seen the vote and stuff

PeachsProperty1 votes

let enemy team offer mercy. and when it is done the ones who afk/offline get double/triple/quad LP loss.(based on how often they do it)

make the punishment actually hurt.

bill841 votes

One time a played a game where a premade of four quit on the enemy team, leaving only the Karthus, who kept playing the whole time and even got a kill or two.

FastAsHeck1 votes

or just use the /eq system in normals :P

with all 5 players having to agree ofc
