Trolling has killed the league community

SP Dodgecity··41 votes·3,457 views

League along with most internet games has been destroyed by one simple concept.

It's so funny to troll.

Its so much fun to try and get someone really pissed off, to make them frustrated as hell. League has adopted that trolling is just too damn fun. I'll tell you right now that most trolls wouldn't dare say what they do to anyone they respected in reality. If they did , they'd most likely find themself beat up or without friends. No one likes a troll ever. So why do it? Cause its funny? Cause its fun? You know what a troll is another name for? A virtual punk, a bully, someone who decides that the best way to deal with their insecurities is to try and get emotion out of another.

Trolls make me sick, they cause communities like LoL to develop the most toxic atmosphere imaginable. To imply the only way to beat a troll is to bend backwards and let them troll but just deal with it... thats like saying the best way to stop a thief is to just throw money at him every time they speak. Or the best way to stop a murderer is to throw yourself into their knife repeatedly, that should stop them right?

"whoops, I found a killer, well i don't want him to kill me so Ill just throw myself at him until I die... that should stop him"

It doesn't make sense, and yes those examples might be extreme but it doesn't matter, we shouldn't allow trolls to exist if we hate them so much. If someone is trolling then we need to tell them that it's not ok. In fact, i'd like to try and find hackers who can do their own temporary banning of toxic players, so that they have some form of consequence for being a down right hateful person to others.

Getting a kick out of someone's frustration or pain, whether it's a game or not, is psychotic and it needs to STOP.

I know I'll probably attract every troll and his dog to this post, but someone has to say it. It's not ok to let someone be a jackass. Stop being a troll, make league of legends fun again.

EDIT: When I mention trolling, I'm also including flaming/tilting others, bad attitudes in game, etc. I should have mentioned that.

I run into trolls so rarely I find it hard to believe they've killed League. The last time I ran into a troll I recall was a few months ago, hardly frequent enough to be more than a nuisance.

Trolling i guess was a term I used to encompass a lot of things. Tilting/flaming other team mates, being toxic, etc.

General bad attitude, but most of it started with trolling, it may not be a big thing now, but it used to be, and I think that contributed a lot to peoples attitude towards gaming and talking to each other online

would you also used terms like 'Ruffien' or a 'Hoolgan' or down right uncouth ?

Those would be good synonyms for sure.

Idk how that conversation would go though XD

If you play as part of a premade most often or are a casual player your ability to recognize a troll is severely diminished. You probably never count the times the opposing team has one even though those games are just as unenjoyable.

The fact of the matter is that about half of all games of league have been trolled in some fashion or another for the last 7 years. To this day I still see at least one in basically every other game I play and I've played 35,000 some odd matches in 7 years. If you don't see them then you either are one, ignore them, or are unaware of what one is because you don't take the games you play seriously.

The op is right, the overwhelming amount of trolling players these days is astounding. It has made this game far less enjoyable to play.

You might just be lucky with matchmaking and not be paired with or against them often, but it doesn't change the fact they are extremely prevelant.

DrCyanide2 votes

I pay attention, I just haven't seen them.

I've seen off meta builds, I've seen intentional feeders occasionally on the other team, I've seen trolls occasionally on both my team and the enemy team, but they're certainly not every other game.

There we go, we found out why you don't see "trolls" often, it's because of how you define the action of trolling. For example, 99% of the playerbase will tell you that intentionally feeding is a form of trolling, and it is, yet you classify it as something altogether different.

Here is what most players consider "trolling" (playing the game in a fashion to deliberately cause misery for others): intent feeding, afking, griefing (such as following a Jg around and stealing his camps or typing in all chat the locations and actions of your teammates), botting, boosting, scripting, ddosing, intentionally throwing, and verbal toxicity.

Now that you understand the terminology more properly think about your games again and give us a revised estimate on how much you see any of the above mentioned actions (and yes, at this point it's clear you are a casual player so I don't expect you to be able to recognize something like a scripter or a boosting player easily so you will not be able to give accurate testament to some things but that's fine.) in your games, either from your team or the opposing team. We know it won't be "rarely" and it's not likely to be close to my 50% (but then I've played wwwaaaaaayyyyyy more than you so sample size matters) but it will certainly be larger than your original estimation. For science sir, tell us your personal experience.

botting, boosting, scripting, ddosing, [...] and verbal toxicity.

I can see Intentional Feeding as being a type of trolling, but these are not trolling under any definition.

Absolutely they are, these are actions outside the expected appropriate in game actions of players according to the ToS and are various forms of toxicity, or trolling.

DrCyanide5 votes

Breaking the ToS is not what defines Trolling...

  • Letting your little brother play a bot game on your account is against the ToS, but it's not considered Toxic or Trolling.
  • Using a custom skin that only you can see is against the Tos, but isn't considered Toxic or Trolling.
  • Giving Riot inaccurate personal information is against the ToS, but is not considered Toxic or Trolling.

A lot of this misperception is due to specific mindsets in one's respective elo.

In bronze, consider yourself unfathomably (is this even a real word?) lucky if you go more than a handful of games without someone purposely trolling either because all the passive-aggressiveness is the final straw and they would rather lose just to spite their toxic teammates or they have no cares left to give because they have nothing left to lose due to being permanently stuck where they are and a new account is technically a superior choice.

I think the larger issue at hand is the fact that trolling is just super present in the gaming/internet community. I personally don't find it enjoyable to be an annoying asshole but I guess for some people it just grinds their gears the right way??? Like congragulations twitter gamer "antisjwloveshate" with an anime character in their header who's 39 and 350 pounds congragulations 4 being a dick

I think between the constant trolls and the way Riots reporting system works... That is what has ruined part of this community.

SP Dodgecity1 votes

I totally agree, a lot of things attribute to it for sure. It's easier for a troll to flame someone or to try and tilt other people when the reporting system itself isn't adequate to actually punish toxic players.

Problem with term "trolling" is that some people see everything they disagree with as trolling. Thats what makes such perception that "trolling" is common. Its not. Its very rare. This year i played on 3 accounts(one started gold, one started silver and one i lvled this season). In entire year i came upon 4 trolls. 2 in URF, 1 in ascension and 1 while leveling account. URF ones were just dicks, guy in ascension did it cause we banned Shaco and guy when i was leveling account did it because someone else went mid after he "called" it (we won that game btw). I played Ranked, Normal Draft, Normal Blind and all rotating modes. So trolls are rare. But tools that call everything trolling are common. So far i encountered following things being labeled as "trolling" by some tools even tho its NOT trolling

-Jungler not ganking -Supporting not buying sightstone -Constant splitpushing as Nasus, Singed -Not sacrificing life for ADC -Not picking tank top lane (??? this actually happened believe me) -Picking Teemo top -Picking Teemo mid -Picking Teemo Jungle -Picking Teemo Support -Picking Teemo ADC -Missing smite -Avoiding pointless teamfights -Not calling SS -Losing lane -Dying alot -Not taking teleport top lane -Forgetting to take smite as jungler

List can go on and on and on. But in all honesty only few things are really trolling. Running to turret letting it kill u without doing any damage or anything. Buying something pointless(not actually experimenting) like 6 tears on Zed(Going AP Zed is not trolling) or 6 boots. Using abilities on purpose to put your team in danger (Tahm im looking at you) and basically telling opponents in chat where your team is and what they are doing. 99% of things people call trolling is NOT trolling and is NOT punishable

SP Dodgecity1 votes

Again when I say trolling Im also referring to flaming, tilting others on purpose or intentially, having a bad attitude in game like saying, "gg" in all chat after losing firtblood, etc.

Trolling in the way i'm defining it is doing something to make another player feel bad about themself or their gameplay. OR purposefully trying to "tilt" a player for the sole purpose of pissing them off.

Trolling as in "in game" trolling is a little different and I agree, is pretty rare, where someones actions are the highlight of the troll. Mainly trolls just say mean shit. Like "this Dumbass over here building deathcap on Caitlyn.. no wonder you suck, un-instal please"

Stuff like that.

Gibberwatt1 votes

Those are all bad things, but I think you are slightly misinformed about trolling. Trolling, in my mind, is playing like a dick (be it intentional feeding, intentionally wrong champ selection, stealing leashes... Etc.) what you are describing are examples of verbal dickery. So, I think what you really have an issue with are people being dicks, rather than trolling (physical dickery)

eXplicit eXpert1 votes

Pretty sure most of these responses are indeed... From Trolls.

Avios11 votes

People called me a troll for going Tank Teemo...

There's a reason we won those games ;~;

eXplicit eXpert1 votes

Straight from Google... informal make a deliberately offensive or provocative online posting with the aim of upsetting someone or eliciting an angry response from them. "if people are obviously trolling then I'll delete your posts and do my best to ban you"

Pikmints1 votes

I can't stand how popularized, mostly via high level streamers/youtubers, intentionally BMing your opponents or trying to make someone tilt has become. Here's to praying that Riot eventually develops a "hide emotes" button so emote spammers are able to be ignored like people who spam all-chat can be ignored by turning that off in the options. Maybe then I can turn on champion voices again without hearing people intentionally trying to be irritating the same way four year olds do.

Kadavik1 votes

In fact, i'd like to try and find hackers who can do their own temporary banning of toxic players, so that they have some form of consequence for being a down right hateful person to others.

I think that might backfire tremendously. As with any vigilante group, maintaining clear morals and goals is just extremely hard if not impossible. Not to mention hacking accounts, weather the person being hacked deserves it or not is probably illegal.

Ryzing2Diamond1 votes

I agree, trolling is really a hinderance on this games growth. it gets really old to queue up for a game, and right in champion select, every fucking time, you instantly know who's trolling. Really sucks, especially when you're in your promos. Even worse when that troll queues with support as secondary and is trolling over that.

I am speaking of the infamous Support Trundle of course. Didn't catch on?

experienced two games with a troll today. no, rammus support and renekton jungle are not trolling. But rammus going top and feeding to annoy the top laner is trolling. Renekton jungling and only coming to lane to steal cs is also trolling. Both did not communicate AT ALL. nothing written in chat.

Bullshit only walks if you let it. If we really tried. Like "REALLY" tried, we could change that. Companies only do what makes them money. If we stop doing what makes them money then they'll change and conform to OUR new culture. They might encourage bad culture but we always have the choice in the end.

SP Dodgecity1 votes

But why is trolling fun? Tell me would you troll your best friend? In real life? Would you tell them they're worthless or would you try your best to piss him off as much as possible. Or would you tell a random stranger to go kill themself?

Trolling isn't ok, it's not, it's purposefully trying to bring someone to anger which never ends up good. I think there are better things to enjoy in life then someones pain.

I run into a lot of trolls. Just last game our Support Lux was roaming from 7 minutes in game to the end. Her adc died like 18 times at the end of the game (60 minute game), and she never grouped with us. Shed also come into your lane to take your cs. Which annoys me because im Nasus. This is why I love ranking. People never want to listen.

Verdade1 votes

If support sucessfully roams and his ADC dies its ADC's fault. Also supports tend to roam/solo in late-game because they need to set up vision for the rest of their team...

You really think that someone should get beat up for trolling a video game? Step back and take a breather man!

SP Dodgecity1 votes

Not entirely, though most would love to, I'm saying that if a troll "said" what they typed in chat to actual real life people. People would #1 want to fight or (the more likely one) #2 decide that that kind of toxicity isn't healthy and never try to be around that person again. Meaning no friends.

The point is, if it's something you would do to a stranger at school or on the street, then you shouldn't do it to people online. It's not right and if our community ever hopes to get healthier we need to stop using the excuse of, "it's a game i can do whatever I want" Making a choice to be hurtful whether online or off, in a game or in someones home, it's not ok. It's wrong. Plain and simple.

The sooner we all realize this the sooner our community stops being one of the most toxic.
