I fully believe that if the boards had their way, every champion would be the same.

Champions in the game have abilities and/or combos that allow them to fulfill strategic niches that other champions don't fill. Some examples of these are Caitlyn traps Irelia mobility Lulu polymorph etc. (i would list more but these are the only ones I am 100% sure on, no I won't argue with you about Irelia's niche because if you don't see that her Q defines her playstyle then I don't know what the fuck to tell you)

There is some amount of overlap between strategic niches, but riot's goal is to make every champion have a specific reason to be picked. You pick Lulu over Janna orMorgana specifically for Polymorph's guarateed CC and the life-saving ultimate that Lulu provides. You pick Caitlyn for the early game lane bully power that her traps and range provides. You pick Irelia because she is the mobile bruiser (yeah other champions like Yasuo are also mobile, but they aren't as tanky as irelia, there is an important difference).

These signature abilities tend to be very powerful and that makes people very angry. I won't lie, Caitlyn's traps are annoying to deal with, Lulu polymorph can feel extremely cheap because it's basically impossible to screw up, and Irelia's mobility makes her disgustingly slippery. But that doesn't mean their """problematic""" abilities should be nerfed.

If you nerf the abilities that make a champion stick out from others, then they lose their strategic niche and they lose what makes them noticeably different from other champions. Instead you have to take power out of other parts of their kit to balance out their strong areas.

If I had my way, every champion would be held to the standard that they used to be. They would have clearly defined strengths, and even more clearly defined weaknesses. None of these bullshit day one Irelia reworks or release Camilles who have tons of strengths and no clear weakness or correct answer when played by someone who grasps even the basest fundamentals of their kit.

I agree. Generalist champions who have too much in their kit are a real issue. Stuff like Gragas and Irelia crowd out other picks because they're objectively better than other champions unless gutted or changed.

While champions like Caitlyn and Lulu have extremely annoying mechanics to deal with (Cait traps make me want to die when I step on them and Lulu polymorph seriously feels like it should be a skillshot sometimes), they do have intended and clearly defined weaknesses. Cait traps have to be walked on. YOU have to fuck up, Cait can't make you step on the things, they don't move. As for polymorph, Lulu's weakness is that the burden of picking the optimal time to use the spell is solely on her. You have to time it properly. Mistiming it can lead to losing your team the fight. I mistimed polymorphing a Kat the other night, and because of that, she was able to ult my team and kill all of us.

I am PERFECTLY fine with champions having annoying mechanics tied to their kits if those mechanics have easily exploited weaknesses

I want champions to be unique but not gutloaded with tons and tons and tons of utility.

Yeah the champs that arent deleted outright would be really boring and we would balance around votes instead of logic.

Every game would be:

Shen vs Shen

Warwick vs Warwick

Annie vs Annie

Ashe vs Ashe

Taric vs Taric

The entire team1 votes

If the community had their way, around half the roster of champions would be deleted, the other half overbuffed to the point of Project M levels, and r/LeagueOfLegends members eating their bowl of Cheerios with piss instead of milk.

Caitlyn is a hyper-carry and a lane bully at the same time which is why she's continually an enormous problem. Irelia's niche is/was to be anti-ADC/enchanter combinations and being mobile was a means to that end. Now she's filling the same job of basically any diver/skirmisher but doing it a little differently.

You pick Lulu if your ADC is an on-hit champion because of her Pix and her W steroid, which is why she's so cancer when paired with Kog'Maw; her ult sucks and Poly is just an added bonus.

Filling the same job other champions can slot into but doing it through different means is a mechanical preference, not strategic value. This is the same trap that almost every modern/reworked Vanguard tank has fallen into, and it's the trap that Riot has been working diligently to start pulling Divers out of.

If you nerf the abilities that make a champion stick out from others, then they lose their strategic niche and they lose what makes them noticeably different from other champions.

If you nerf everything else about them in case of unbalancable champs like Irelia, then they're nothing but literally that one thing. And If that one thing can be bypassed, the win is determined in champ select because that was the one "unique" thing. We'll continue to nerf irelia until her E does nothing but reset Q, ult does nothing but reset Q, W does nothing and you have the champion that jumps on you and back and that's the only thing they have strong. Because it couldn't get nerfed because "it makes them unique", and it defines them. Then you go against something that can lock her down for longer period of time and congrats you lost the one thing.

You kind of outplayed your own argument though.

Then you go against something that can lock her down for longer period of time and congrats you lost the one thing.

The fact that Irelia can be locked down is will prevent her from getting to a point where she's just a Q bot. She'll still need considerable power in other areas of her kit because her Q still has counterplay.

Velzard of Koz1 votes

Yeah except that's power race then. I specifically said "lock her down for longer period of time". We are talking another champion that would be overpowered in that aspect. That champion will make Irelia balanced while opressing those already immobile. You'll have to pick such champ to make Irelia balanced otherwise she opresses you.

If Irelia will have other stuff strong enough to survive such situations, then once again THAT champion will need something more otherwise his tool that's supposed to counter her is not enough. And that's where Overloadness comes from.

Not to mentoin that one reason why Riot would feel the need to make Divers overloaded is exactly because they arm-race with Tanks. What you suggest is already there, it's the reason why release Irelia was the way she is, it's already problem. You can look at Sylas too. He has wide array of tools, because he'll need them to keep up. His uniqueness is stealing ults, but he also needs shield, healing, dash and pull-in, knock-up... That's exactly what you suggest, so he has a ot of tools besides the ult-stealing in case he faces someone with sub-par ult.

But If he faces someone with good ult, he has THAT plus the shield, healing, dash etc. Try to keep up with that.
