What if Crit dealt true damage instead of % bonus damage?

HalcyonDweller··2 votes·399 views

Imagine if Critical Hits converted a % of your damage to true damage instead of just dealing a % bonus amount of damage.

Do you think this would fix the problem of Crit characters having too much burst against other squishy characters?

And a side thought, is the random chance of burst beneficial to the game? For example is the uncertainty (of who will win) engaging when an assassin picks a fight with a marksman?

Discuss below.

That sounds like a great way to make armor even more irrelevant. No

IDK if you've noticed but Vayne is already bringing enough brokenness to the game. We don't need every ADC running around raping everything with true damage.

Out of curiosity, why do you think that?

I would think that the damage being converted instead of boosted would result in less damage to health stacking champions, and I'm not proposing specific numbers for it, I'm just looking for a way to reduce damage creep.

Personally I'd rather see damage just get lowered across the board. I get bursted down when I play Juggernauts way too easy already, maybe not the one or two shots it takes for a squishy, but still far more than was allowed a few years ago. Replacing the current crit with some true damage might help keep squishy targets alive longer, but the front line trying to protect them will simply go down faster.

I think this change will just make the game even more focused on high damage, as the usual front liners get replaced by assassins that don't need to survive in the front line.

Would it have that effect? I would think that having less overall damage, but dealing some of the damage as true damage (when critting) would do a good job of lowering damage across the board while still making crit relevant.

I have no illusions about making squishy characters last just as long as front liners. That would be terrible for the game and it is not my intention. The goal here is to reduce Crit Marksmen's ability to burst other squishies, not increase their damage to tanks.

If they deal less damage overall, would the true damage conversion really be that much of a problem?

Would it have that effect?

Maybe? Could also just be that I'm overly worried about anything that weakens the front line right now. I am rather biased toward it after all.

With less damage we could weaken defensive items, and then I'm not sure the true damage would be needed. Maybe it could just be bonus physical damage at that point.

No worries mate, we're on the same side here. I just want to balance out the classes a little more so that marksmen can't just assassinate other squishies freely. I have no intention of trampling the frontline with my suggested changes.

Perhaps, yes. But right now I feel like Crit is just the answer to everything for an AD auto-attacker. They kill tanks better, they kill towers better, and they kill squishies better. There is no tradeoff for building Crit, and I feel like there should be. Each class is supposed to have diverse item choices that give them impactful decisions they can make that help them to do their job better in one or two ways. Crit right now goes too far and it helps them do ALL of their job better with little tradeoff.

I think that was one of the nicer things about old Runaan’s Hurricane. You would get a lot of attack speed if you wanted it, plus the two extra bolts, but it came at the cost of not building more crit.

No, reworking crit to be a non-RNG ramp up would be much healthier.

How so? I'm not doubting your idea, just looking for further clarification so I can understand what you have in mind.

Then item 3143 would be useless

If you're referring to the crit passive it could certainly be tweaked somehow to affect how much damage would be converted, or something like that.

I'm not suggesting we change crit and leave everything else the same. Things that interacted with crit might need tuning to bring them back into balance if the function of crit damage was changed.

Riot will NEVER make it so true damage can ever be reduced, otherwise it isn't true damage That's why item 3193 on Chogath is broken, as the damage reduced you deal doesn't apply to his true damage

Well it would have to be something else then, perhaps pre-true damage or something. The idea is to preserve the impact that Randuin's Passive has on crit, not give it impact on true damage in general.

That'd be horrible.

Think of it like this: Instead of increasing the power a 300 damage AA to 600 or 750, that 300 damage AA would instead just do partial true damage. Your ability to fight a squishy target? Down the tubes. Your ability to fight a high hp target efficiently? Down the tubes (flat true damage sucks loses out to hp stacking). This would make marksmen relatively useless.

Why should Crit items bridge multiple use paths while tankier classes are forced to build much more carefully to be able to do their job? That just kills item diversity. And it seems a bit one-sided in my opinion.

Additionally, auto-attacks are much more reliable than abilities. Why should they be rewarded with the same level of damage as those abilities?

Lastly, there are multiple items that can be bought for the explicit purpose of dealing more damage to high HP stacking targets. Making Crit work better against armor and deal less damage overall does not make it impossible for Marksmen to deal with tanks. And Tanks should be rewarded for building smartly too. Stacking HP against a Crit building enemy would be strategically advantageous in this situation.

The problem I have with it is that Marksmen have little trade-off for building Crit. They build crit and just do everything about their job better. They kill towers better, they kill tanks better, and they kill squishies better. There's a lot less thought process in it and it's not strategic or worthwhile to plan around.
