This "go next" mentality is REALLY getting out of hand

Zardo··133 votes·21,798 views

I know this is an unpopular opinion on these boards because of the amount of posts I see like "make early surrender votes pass if it's 4/1" and whatnot, but I believe that this defeatist surrender mentality has gone too far.

I recently played a game where the enemy mid laner disconnected in the middle of the match. Instead of trying to win and playing it out, 3 of our teammates typed "open mid" or "go next" and started trolling despite the fact that one of our carries was fed and doing extremely well. So in the end we wound up losing a 5v4 despite 1 of the players who was initially trolling playing seriously.

Look, I get it. Playing poorly sucks. However, you don't queue up for ranked to have $ick lc$ plays and hard carry your team, you queue to win the game and climb the ladder. So just because you think it isn't winnable doesn't mean that it actually isn't winnable, there still may be some win condition one of your teammate sees that you can't. So instead of trolling because your team won't surrender, play it out until the end, don't throw a hissy fit because you didn't get your way.

It's the worst it has ever been and it's probably because of streamers like Tyler1 who frequently say "gg go next" after the first death of the game. Despite that he winds up winning a decent amount of those games. If players can't abuse those leads that you think are insurmountable at his elo, do you really think players at your elo can abuse them? People throw all the time.

TL;DR- Don't start trolling because you want to ff, then don't start trolling because the vote failed. Stick it out, play to win.

Honestly, the attitude's blame does fall on the people who do it, but the origin of that attitude is that those people don't enjoy playing the game. The game has gone through a fundamental shift that has ruined it for many people. I know back then I didn't care how far behind we were because I was having too much fun actually playing the game to want to surrender. Now? The minute I realize my bot lane is incompetent, or that my mid laner is going to feed his ass off, I just shut down. My desire to play the game out leaves me, because I know what's going to happen. The enemy team is going to steamroll us, and there's going to be nothing we can do about it because the game has become a contest of advantage and objective.

"I could still stay relevant enough to matter if I can just keep getting this scuttle gold...oh wait, the enemy team is stupid fed and can just deny me that gold, making them even more fed and making me fall behind even more."

"If we just win one teamfight at baron!...Oh, but we've been unable to take any towers all game because of how far ahead the enemy team is, and by the time we push to their inhib, they're all alive again, will turtle until the inhib is back, and then Baron will run out and we'll be fucked..."

The minute you start losing, you're just bleeding until you die. There used to be ways to stabilize, but now the game favors a more "Win harder" style than a "Small victories" style.

The amount of games won by those that try far surpass the games of those that surrender.

I don't give up until my mid laner is 0/5 or my bot lane is 80 CS behind.

Unfortunately that just isn't true if the enemy team is playing properly. And that's the worst part about it. You don't come back in games because you were good enough to take advantage of key moments to launch yourself back into the lead, you come back because they fuck up once and lose.

Because I like League of Legends. I care about Riot because I've had so many good times and memories through their creation. I want to see the game be better. I have a vested emotional interest in League of Legends. And I'm willing to bet everyone who complains about the game does as well, or else they would just give up on it and leave

No one is saying they dislike all games, just a larger portion of games become less enjoyable sooner than in the past. For some people, Bot games and normals are boring as hell and rank is a 50/50 depending on the early game. They still enjoy enough games that it doesn’t make sense to stop but they don’t enjoy the game enough to prolong every lost game.

Eleshakai1 votes

Yes, but if you dislike the games you lose(which should be approximately half), then committing to play is a poor decision.

haaaaaaalp1 votes

Not if you are using open mid appropriately. And it isn’t even about disliking games, just not enjoying enough to prolong certain games.

Eleshakai4 votes

I'm sorry but no. If your response to 'I got a bit behind' is 'welp its over let them win because I can't have fun anymore' then NO, you should NOT be playing the game. A big part of this game IS losing gracefully and you'll never learn how to do that well enough to make comebacks if you don't PRACTICE it when the opportunity arises.

I wish people with this attitude didn't queue ranked. At all. Ever.

Just don't do it with that mentality, you aren't queueing to play ranked, and are not acceptable in the competitive environment

Why do you queue ranked if you're not mentally prepared to fall back/lose advantage? What's the point? Playing only 15-minute ff stomps and leaving when it's the other way around will NEVER get people far.

Genuinly hate this attitude and people who bear it.

What's the point of spending 25 minutes playing a game that's 80% lost when I could lose asap and then spend 20 minutes winning the next game? Climbing is a matter of games played, so fitting in one or two more games per week can be the difference between silver 1 and gold 5

To become a better player. You will improve FAR more as a player if you play the even/behind games than if you just play the easy wins. Once you improve, the rank will fall into place naturally.

This is actually a poor mentality to possess. Individuals who no longer desire to play, no longer have a desire to learn. You achieve nothing outside of making the individual attempt to act in accordance to your own personal views. You can attempt to motivate, but if 3 people want out of the game, you shoudnt force them under the silly premise of learning. You cannot force someone to learn.

THE POOR MENTALITY is to have no desire to play and learn. when you know this is your mind set and where it goes you stop queing if there is any chance that it goes into that place.

Except for the fact that then no one should ever play ranked queue if they ever get tilted, or ever view the game as unwinnable. You are suggesting to never surrender but this is not an accurate statement. The nature of the game is snowbally, and in many cases, there is nothing to glean outside of to avoid what caused you to lose in the first place, and in many cases, it is beyond your control. One can only control their own actions, not their teammates.

Eleshakai2 votes

No actually, I'm suggesting that nobody should play ranked if they aren't capable of learned from losing games. Everyone gets tilted sometimes... but if EVERY SINGLE loss tilts you to the point where you're incapable of learning from the game and tyou just want it over... then yes, the ranked environment is not one you should be a part of.

There are MANY lessons you can learn from games where you're behind, even extraordinarily far behind:

  1. Defensive warding.
  2. Safely contesting objectives.
  3. Safe waveclear (specifically defending turrets when being sieged)
  4. Playing around fed enemy champions
  5. Map awareness

These are all lessons that can be learned in games where you're behind, and 3 of them can ONLY be learned when you're behind... yet are still useful when ahead. If you know how to defensively ward, then you know what enemies will do when trying to defensively ward, for example.

In reality, it is unhealthy to approach ranked play with any mindset that is not focused on learned every lesson possible in every game you play. Other mindsets are a big part of what leads to you getting tilted in the first place... since your focus is JUST on winning, the second things start looking down, you start looking for something to blame. Blame leads to a feeling of helplessness, which leads to tilt. On the other side, if your mindset is around learning, then when things start going south, your mind will naturally see it as an opportunity to learn the stuff that can only be learned when behind, and you'll still be trying your best to win without getting (as) upset.

I really don't understand how it took people this long to realize that this isn't season 5 where you actually had a chance to win if people hard feed in the early game. In season 8, when one lane hard feeds, it's over. Just ff and don't waste my time. I'm glad people are finally catching on. I hate it when the scoreline is like 5-22 and two assholes refuse to ff. I've gotten a tonne of leavebusters this season because of that shit. Playing out a stomp is absolutely not fun at all. I don't mind stomps but please for fuck's sake, just surrender when you're on the wrong side of a stomp.

chipndip118 votes

I'm sorry, but if you shit the bed when I'm trying to hold the team up, I'm not about to try to fight my way through a 10/2 Vayne or a 8/1 Sivir as a utility pick because you're bad enough to let your lane opponent get to that point.

If I'm begging you to play smart and you decide to troll until the pendulum swings in the other direction, I don't think of you as someone that deserves to tell me jack shit about whether I want to deal with your Naruto-ass or not.

or you can not make a 15 minute game play into a 50 minute because you think its winnable (and then you lose anyway)

I would rather have to duo with someone who ints every game than be paired with a random who refuses to surrender

There's a difference between playing a drawn out game that's drawn out due to neither team gaining or losing ground, and a drawn out game that's just 30-40 minutes of one team one-sidedly beating on the other but just not ending it quickly.

SaltyToplaneGoat14 votes

Well it IS just the most efficient way to climb. I got Diamond with it with playing FREAKING SORAKA TOPLANE - and my climb started at low gold.

The moment there is a 10 kill lead at 15 minutes and ANY sort of objective lead by the enemy it just is over. That's how it is. Either you surrender at 15, or you stall out until 35, and then lose anyways as you don't "comeback". The game just progresses as the enemy takes you apart piece by piece and you can't do jack shit about it. This is what Riot wants this game to be, so don't be surprised when players adjust accordingly and do now this.

In the same time I stall out a losing game that would give me one loss, I can start a new one, potentially be on the stompy end this time and come out on a win, making a net zero - one win, one lose. As Zero is better than Minus one, with adding more chances that don't feel like a unrewarding timesink, it will be the superior way of climbing ranked. This is by design, so don't blame the players on it.

Silly Neeko9 votes

Honestly i want a checkbox that remembers your answer and doesnt show the vote thing again. I get tired of one person having a bad game and then sitting there surrendering for the next 30 mins.

I swear people do that just to annoy people.

But yeah, its always been out of hand. People complain about the games ending so quickly.... yet they are some of the ones that are surrendering at 15 even when they are being carried.

No kidding its ending early, you are literally giving yourself a 100% loss just by surrendering and then wonder why the games are ending so fast!

Zardo9 votes

A lot of the time it isn't even the surrender that puts the nail in the coffin, it's the fact they don't play to win, they just mess around until the FF vote is up

Need Gold 4 Tent8 votes

Because these 25 minute losses have been a loss since 7 minutes in when everyone fed their asses off to a score of 2/12. Sure you can defend. The enemy then free farms, takes uncontested crabs/dragons/rift/your jungle buffs, then slowly takes your turrets 1 auto at a time. You can't even farm under turret because they can dive, so you don't even get to cs. You desperately wave clear from a distance, not really getting the last hits while your underfarmed tank and bruiser stay behind watching for a hard engage that they can't prevent anyway (while being gold starved themselves)

Maybe you can drag it out but by the time you can actually safely farm, that's because the superminions have led an entire army of minions to siege your base, meaning you now also have to give up baron and the enemy literally just has to just stand around and laugh while you attempt to fend off 5 waves of baron buffed superminions with your inferior items.

Yes, you lasted longer than 15 minutes. But that was 10 unnecessary minutes wasted because of some anime "never give up" mentality. It's not even fun to play anymore at that point. If there's 1 guy who trolls the 4/1 vote, the 4 should just go farm jungle and let this guy defend alone.

I memba balance 8 votes

Okay Mr White Knight that believes every game has a win condition. You're the type of jackass that holds other players prisoner by not voting Yes and forcing people to play out an unwinnable game. FF'ing at 15 minutes is a whole lot better than wasting another 5+ minutes flailing in the wind when you could have used that extra time playing out a 100% loss, to queue up and get into another game. It's called. And here's the dirty little secret....if you do somehow pull out the impossible victory, it still will take longer than the average game, you'll still probably be tilted as fuck, and you still could have taken the LP loss on a short short game, and gone into another game with a fresh start by the time your "winnable" game ends.

I'm definitely a prisoner if my bot lane is 0-4 before I've hit level 3 in the jungle, and then later they wont vote yes at 15 just to spite me for not "ganking" their lane.

3TWarrior3 votes

did they say that they did that? was one of the other lanes doing well?

If you refuse to surrender an unwinnable game just because you tell yourself theres always a chance, the you are in fact, holding others prisoner in the game.

Leetri7 votes

What is an "unwinnable" game though? Is a game where it's 0/5 unwinnable, even though 3 of those kills are on their Soraka who "accidentally" stole them and your midlaner is 30 CS ahead? Ever stopped and thought that maybe people can't come back because instead of trying to win they give up the instant the enemy gets a single kill? And since they're not even trying it leads to more kills, which further cements the enemy's lead.

OurLord SolusGod6 votes

You don't know how many games I've won from the brink. But what fking pisses me off is if someone dies 2 times everyone tries to ff, and sometimes when I'm alone, even if I'm ahead, or even if I know I can carry my team would just ff.....like FFS, I spend 20 minutes farming up and getting all these items to one shot people and win and these fkers just ff like a spinless Zac. Grow some fking balls people and give yourself a bit more credit than a fking frog.

Im tired of playing fucking matches that dredge on for 10-20 minutes longer than necessary when im playing ADC and just get oneshotted by everything. If I go to a teamfight and die instantly in the backline, let me out because thats not going to change for the rest of the game and were gonna lose. I'll always play it out in ranked, because everythings winnable in ranked but holy shit stop wasting my time in norms.

I kinda blame riot for this. This is the direction this game has taken.

Gonna get a lot of hate for this but I blame CertainlyT for the games condition.

Yes, there were annoying champions in season 3. But atleast it was possible to ban them out with 3 bans.

now the list of these champions has grown, which makes banning out all of the annoying/op champs impossible.

Which leaves people with the choice of either being forced to play OP champs to keep up, or playing non-meta champs and risking being hard counter picked.

For example- Imagine liking Ziggs. Imagine wanting to main him. So you que up into a ranked game, and you have to ban something. Who do you ban? Graves the OP champion, or yasuo, who is not necessarily OP but hard counters you because of his mobility and windwall. (Again, thankyou CT)

Fact is, you can't ban both. So you either play a champion that isn't hard countered by the stupid new shit and ban out the OP champ, or you play the OP champ and ban out the annoying stuff. Or you can play ziggs into yasuo/graves and make better plays/moves/tactics and still lose the game simply because you lost at champ select.

This is how I feel about league now and why I think players are frustrated.

Jeanne fan club3 votes

The more you actually play, the more you realize its more satisfying to ff at 15 than to actually play the game. Idk about you, but every single game i play is either 0-18 by 15 minutes or 18-0 by 15 minutes. The only reason the game doesn't end at 15 is because some a-hole votes no on surrender. That a-hole shouldn't have the power to force us to sit through that bs.

Roark13 votes

It has nothing to do with "Tyler1". It's because the game has become such a sloppy nightmare it's not enjoyable as soon as an enemy player gets any type of lead. Damage is so high tanks are one-shotting carries (or at least doing so much damage they're forced out of the fight). The same champions have been absolute cancer for the entire season and players are sick of it. I'm looking at you Jax Irelia Zed Akali Camille Graves

Nobody wants to deal with jax/irelia 1v9'ing and abusing a broken game for 35 minutes when you can "go next".
