Why isn't the design team being held responsible for this game's state?

literally almost all champions released/reworked since 2017 are huge problems that requiered so much ressources to be fixed obviously Akali but also Sylas Pyke Aatrox Galio Irelia Kayle those champions just can't stop being in the patch notes with endless nerfs/buffs, or endless attempts of powershifting that just end up solving nothings.

Kayle is dogshit, "mini-rework is planned" yea sure, go mini rework a champ that you just spent a whole year creating a new kit, and waste ressource because your vgu was garbage and didn't change anything while also making her even more unfun to play. Galio has 43% win rate and 1% pick rate right now, and will get buffed then again being a problem Sylas is the new cancer, overloaded af and unfun to play against Ornn is straight up unplayable, but do you really want Ornn to be buffed? no, hell no. Mordekaiser even Mordekaiser has 70% ban rate right now, almost as akali when her rework was out, and that even after his hotfix. Yuumi And now we have Yuumi with 100% pick/ban rate in pro play since her release, with pro players PERSONALLY asking to nerf her.

so why, why are they allowed to release overloaded champions and get away with literally zero consequences?

they're allowed to do that because ekko, azir and yasuo exist. but gypsylord got moved around for TFT so we've had certainlyT leading the way for what is considered balanced and fair gameplay, he gave us zoe so he must clearly be ahead of the curve like he still is with yasuo, while generally all of gypsy's champs have been tamed or people don't feel jibbed for losing to them.

azir aside, ekko and yasuo are not even on the level of the champions listed above Yasuo is hated for many reasons like his wall but he doesn't break high elo play or pro play If you're competent against Yasuo you have all the chances to win against him as against any champions

It's not like facing fucking Sylas (when Sylas is not gutted) galio or Irelia

Mordekaiser might be counterable so he might not be bad, tho he has 70% ban rate right now.

i said they only release these champions because of those that already exist and have forced a new balance dynamic in the game (but this latter bit was unsaid). when azir hit's live servers and there is no going back on him anymore suddenly the champions that came before him have to be re-evaluated, as do those coming after him. the thing about azir was that he so outclassed all the other champions that he's had to be nerfed into obscurity until the game is frankly ready for him, his kit is not outdated or unhealthy, his kit is just too far ahead of it's time. this isn't the case for ekko and yas though as they're in some type of sweet spot rito want to hit, so those two champions are serving as the new balance standard for lol due to them having been able to matchup to azir in his pomp. and from my observations all champions henceforth have been designed with the ekko/yas yardstick in mind, especially after those crazy LPL ekko vs yas plays that litter the seasons.

Because it's easier to blame the balance team who does everything from making coffee to design to bug fixes

I feel like Kayle is a numbers issue just nerf her late game which doesn't exist and buff her early and mid game. There the rework is better. Meanwhile everyone else had their shit removed to be tolerable

But yeah, the guys at champion design gets away with their shit far too many times, and somehow the only thing that this community can think of is "BALANCE TEAM BAD, CERTAINLYT BAD"

Akali is SO HOT15 votes

From what I can tell that a lot of the Kayle players are saying is that her kit just sucks and is boring to play. You basically just play like a pansy for 20 minutes and then become overpowered for like 5 minutes before the game ends.

Abibyama II5 votes

From what I've read, her kit is good (read: not removed and replaced by another, because it's basically the same playstyle) it's just her extreme power curve that makes her unfun to play, I don't see any real issues with the mechanic of her kits.

Just a simple number changes would be enough to make her feel like an actual champion

I could be wrong though

AirKingNeo2 votes

Her kit is not the same playstyle. I would rather have the old E than the new Klepto abuse E.

Abibyama II2 votes

Yeah not exactly the same but I don't see any difference to her fundemental auto attack based play style.

I don't think she's much of a failure unlike Galio and others, Her kit is very fixable imo.

A fuckin cockroach can design better champions than those clueless idiots.

When there is no Rioter with the balls to say "No that's a bad idea don't add it" (hint hint, morello) with no concern of breaking their feelings, then these champions wouldn't be much fair and simply be toxic.

But apparently saying "no" to a designer is against the rules at riot games.

Riot's golden rule: everybody is a sensitive wimp, so critics aren't allowed!

I'm really worried about Morello's project. CertainlyT is a great singe player champion designer who is a scourge to us because he's working on a multiplayer game. What if Morello turns out to be the opposite?

Many agree that CT is great for a single game, but honestly I don't give a shit. The best he should do is sorting out mails. Shit salary, sure but he deserves it.

His view on frustration is very toxic. He thinks frustration is good or some shit, all in all trying to make an excuse for his shit designs in an interview on YouTube. Even the comments section aren't happy about what he said.

Anyway, at least Morello has the balls to not allow stupid shit to pass through. Nobody knows where he's working at.

I mean he said himself he is trying to break the game with every champ he releases.

I should just be fired. Simple. He doesn't want to make a fun and unique champion or make the game better he just wants to have a record on his portfolio "very creative"

"I should just be fired." I mean I get what you're trying to say but...lol XD

If someone doesn't get what a PvP game is, and thinks frustration is good cuz it forces the player to learn how to play against, which is not even the damn case. Overloading a champ with un-necessary stuff that can make them deal with even their own counters is just unfair. Look at WarWick. He's a success, not overloaded, and not even a balance nightmare and that's solely due to ct NOT working alone.

I'll be happy to apply as a champ designer and hold the guy at bay when it comes to champ design. I'll be enjoying roasting him to oblivion. I'm gonna go full Gordon Ramsay on him.

GayFluffyUnicorn2 votes

Welp, little whoopsie on my part i guess lol.

Exactly that is the problem. Just slapping shit onto it for the sake of it. There is nothing unique or creative about it. I can give jax Q a slow, his E a knockup, his R an additional heal on his third hit. His W also heals on last hits. Is that unique? Is that creative? Or even necessary? And that's basically my biggest gripe with his champ designs, also the infamous "here is the counterplay but lemme design his kit to cover that supposed weakness/counterplay".

Pretty much yeah. Apparently noone has the balls at riot to stop these designers tho. I mean look at kayn, DZK has been bitching that kayn wasnt played in the role HE DESIGNED HIM to be and riot instead of trying to balance him around the way people play him they force nerf him into jungle because the designer wants it.

I honestly can't blame him for bitching about Kayn being played outside the sole role he's designed to. The thing about diversity is that it's a double edged sword, it can be fine at times but in other times it's unhealthy and toxic.

Kayn for example, will force only 1 form since he's playing 1 lane only, and IIRC, red Kayn is more op than blue (even though it's anti-tank, cool balancing btw), and top lane is mostly played by melees.

Anyway... Is that infamous line even a thing btw? Is it even widely known to be a certainlyt mindset as a meme or something?

GayFluffyUnicorn2 votes

I mean look at irelia. "Dodge her E, nvm threw her ult into your face guaranteeing an E hit without flash". Well just don't fight her with five stacks up, doesn't matter proceeds to oneshot you with triple Q reset anyways.

Then look at a certaintyt champ like zoe. Well dodge her bubble-->literally throws it across the rift Dodge her bubble duh-->proceeds to R into your face with no possibility to dodge or counterplay because even CC'd her R brings her back to safety.

W w well she's immobile... gets 80% movespeed boost for 8 seconds on top of summs and item actives.

Another certainlyt champ being akali and i mean akali. By far the most broken champ i'd say ever. Darius didn't really have had any counterplay which got fixed with his mini reworks. Thresh? Dodge his hook, ah nvm flay ulted you anyways. Well, atleast you can...nvm threw his lantern. But atleast he has long cool....Q gets CDR reset on hit.

Certanlyt really started a trend among those designers. DZK for example speaks incredibly highly of him and no i don't think kayn was inherently toxic as a laner? What exactly is the problem that rhaast would be used toplane? So be it and one lane only is not true, kayn was played mid as shadow assassin too even in the LCS by caps for example.

Rhaast being an overpowered champion has nothing to do with where he is played. Rhaast is OP in the jungle too.

3TWarrior5 votes

well actually, "fun and unique" are part of his designs, but "easy to balance and fun to play against" are not

no one will deny that it's fun to play yasuo or zoe...just like most people will not deny that it feels absolutely HORRID to play against them unless you already have an advantage...

Like yasuo...his kit counters every kit that relies on projectiles and skill-shots...the ones that do not rely on that were basically just excluded by default...and that's less than half of matchups he faces

GayFluffyUnicorn2 votes

I mean it's kinda in the nature of things that it's fun to play something that barely has any counterplay and makes you feel very powerful tho that's not really a big achievement imo.

A lot of champions are insanely fun to play but never got the chance to shine in the spotlight like fuckin aatrox that riot accused of "noone wants to play him" but the moment he got somewhat playable everyone just spammed the shit out of him before his rework. Ofc noone plays them if they are dogshit power wise.

Yes yasuo is fun i play him myself a lot but even playing champs that are supposed to be good into him he is just a headache to play against and i never really have any trouble to play against him. I just wish riot would maybe test champions when they are in development phase and there were a guy that said "nope can't do that, noone will want to play against that shit".

Season 5 also had runeglaive ezreal mid, ahri mid op for the whole season, etc. etc.

Season 4 wasn't assassin 24/7 And lethality didn't even exist yet, and guardian angel was available to build as a mage rather than just Zhonya. Tank meta started mid season 5 btw. That season still haunts me. Hell, I even went Tank Vel'Koz and went 1v5. Got flamed by the enemy to oblivion. Shows how toxic the meta was.

Riot benefits from having no serious competition, so of course people are going to play it. LoL is basically the only game in town, unless you want to play DOTA.

If there were other comparable MOBAs on the market, Riot would actually have to pay more attention to their customers, but for now, they can get away with doing whatever they want.

Like players will complain for months about a busted ass champion, like Riven was earlier this season. And Riot will say all day that Riven was totally in line, or that it was "regional perception," or whatever.

And then when they finally nerf her, they dont even have the class to admit honestly that the community was right in the first place. And that it was some new metric that finally pushed her over the edge.

The worst offenses of this kind were the ardent censer meta, which lasted way too long, and this burst meta we are in, which is going on what, almost a year now?

So yea they can tell us all to eat shit, but what other moba would we actually switch to? The situation SUCKS.

I'm a Kayle main, and I think the rework is total shit. Her build got fucked up because they gave her attack speed. Her playstyle has degenerated to Klepto abuse. Her unique laning got removed by removing her old E. Her healing is fucking shit now because it isn't single target anymore.

Please fix my champion.

IainG102 votes

Don't forget they changed the way her Ranged-Mode works so that Yas's Windwall can stop it.

Old Kayle used to be my go-to Yas killer....

Tomoe Gozen4 votes

Kayle's "unique" laning was never unique at all. You already have Nidalee, Elise, Jayce and Gnar who can change between melee/range forms. Kayle just had an ability to do that and she was mostly useless unless it was active. Her melee form did not get any benefits which meant you still had to not engage or even get close to minions if the enemy could have easily retaliated.

That being said, Riot could buff Kayle in terms of specific target healing. The one who she target heals gets the full benefit of her previous healing value while the secondary target gets this heal value, since the ability's flat CD and mana cost per level remained the same. This preserves her solo lane sustain while also buffing her supporting capability (i actually on occasion do play support Kayle).

Old Kayle also had a degenerating playstyle. You only needed to hit level 6 + Guinsoo's + Lethal Tempo to get yourself going on a warpath. Old Kayle had her charms and for being unchanged for a long period of years, people have simply gotten used to her bad kit and played around it. She wasn't fun in any sense of the word, she was niche and she still had the big strength of taking only 1-3 seconds in dropping her targets if they had no hard CC to stop her.

But i agree that the current Kayle also has a big drawback of needing too long to come online (level 11+). Without her range, she has retained her major weakness and can't even remain long in a fight to fight back besides using her abilities, not ranged attacks. Riot should definitely leave short windows of her melee form like she previously had and smooth out her power curve. I also don't think it's pretty fun just getting all the passive bonuses from her kit + items and auto-ing people to death in 1-3 seconds flat in the late game.

I'm fine with her ultimate. I don't think that her invulnerability spell that can could've only be stopped by hard CC (previously) without disabling her AAs, had any merit in being her "i cannot lose" button. I think this iteration (with an actual AP ratio), is way better than her pure utility one before.

AirKingNeo6 votes

Her melee form did not get any benefits which meant you still had to not engage or even get close to minions if the enemy could have easily retaliated.

Nidalee and Elise don't lane, so the comparison is stupid. They're also mages, which play completely differently from Kayle's auto attack heavy style. Jayce can choose between being ranged and melee rather than being ranged for a duration. Jayce is also an ad caster (basically a mage), which plays completely differently from Kayle. Gnar is permanently ranged with his passive transforming him into a melee champion, with more CC and health. Again, Gnar plays completely differently than Kayle. Her melee 'form' isn't supposed to have benefits. It's a drawback.

Kayle hasn't been viable support in over 6 seasons. Her heal shouldn't have a second target because that basically removes the choice aspect between healing yourself or others. You'd always get both.

Kayle would need to buy Berserker boots and Nashor's before getting Rageblade, which is 4200 gold on top of Rageblade's cost. She'd be well past level 6 at that point. Most Kayles did not take Lethal Tempo. This isn't even broken levels of power either, plus trying to argue if it did or not would ignore the fact laning phase does in fact exist. Kayle is best at 4 items, not 2.

You also didn't really explain how her playstyle was degenerate. You stated your opinions that she had a bad kit, wasn't fun, was niche. The only thing you said was that she can melt targets if no one CCs her, which is a statement that applies to every ranged auto attacker.

My favorite part of Sylas is how people deny him being overloaded, because he has to be for his kit to work.

The man has a knock up, slow, aoe, waveclear, a dash, a shield, a heal, an execute, and a solid 401K plan from his job.

I get he needs a knock up so he can use Yasuo ult, but a heal? Really? Why? Why a shield? Why a dash? Why can't his E just have the second effect the first time? Don't forget this man can take ANY ULT in the game and give it an AP scaling because...reasons.

All those champs with bad AP scaling because they have high base damage and kits that are meant to utilize other stats? You know, Brand with his liandry's DoT, Chogath who is supposed to go tanky with maybe 1 AP item, Gragas the tanky champ with maybe an AP item but here's a high base damage just in case. Yeah Sylas just takes those and fucking nukes with them, but that's fine because he's melee (except for his Q which lets him poke and CS from a safe distance).

Sylas is supposed to run into some issues with ults (ex: lack of marks for Diana's ult), so no clue why they'd make an exception, especially if it harms one of their most popular champions.

People are too busy blaming other aspects of the game. We wasted 2 months qqing about position based ranked which had nothing to do with poor quality of games. Now, people are shocked that games still suck when position based ranked got removed.

When akali's rework came out, there were tons of people trying to defend it's design and giving bullshit excuses like her numbers were just overtuned and there was nothing wrong with the design. Instead of acknowledging that she needed to be reverted on the spot, people kept thinking the next change would fix her and encouraged riot to waste resources trying to balance the new akali. For all of the crap people gave akali's old design, it was never nearly as problematic as the current one and would have been a better alternative to keep in the game until another rework was made.
