on PBE right now a full Ornn combo deals 73% max hp damage

Hey isn't there like a problem in the design direction Riot is taking?

I’d guess full tank. Ornn’s only AP scaling is on R, and it’s a small ratio. Best thing he gets from AP items might be magic pen for W and Brittle

D357R0Y3R6 votes

his brittle %hp damage has no ap ratio it went from 8+0.3/lvl to 10+0.5/lvl combined with W damage you get the numbers above while being full tank

I think only his W damage %hp damage has an ap ratio but it doesn't really matter

Ornn has no ratio on W it's all based on rank, his R is the only ap (shit) ratio. I would know I typically build RoA first item on aram tanks.

TBH both his and Sejuani's changes seem like they want them to be pseudo-Bruisers or something. Less CC, more damage.

The good old "tank" 100-0 combo

Apparently this is the only possible way to reduce his pro power and increase solo power. Like tank mains really want to deal buckets of damage.

how about just giving voice com to solo players, so we can coordinate ourselves better to close that gap? but nah, lets completely fuck up the identity of an entire class of champions and turn them into fighters.

Voice comms with randoms cant be equated with the dedicated teams of pro play.

Voice comm may even make things worse with how common tilting is in solo queie.

By voice comm, you mean listening to the music and Hash commentary of 4 teenagers at once.

Hard pass.

Ok then, then we deal with tanks doing a ton of damage so they'll work in solo queue without being 45% win rate champions.

See I’d much rather deal with that then random people in chat yelling at me and threatening to report me in all chat if I don’t go into the voice chat.

See, I’d rather my tanks have poor winrates than have more damage at the cost of tank aspects. I don’t care about voice chat, but we don’t need more damage.

Ralanr3 votes

If I had to choose between the two, I’d choose over voice chat. That’s all.

Thankfully this isn’t the actual choice we need to make.

ADCs deal too much damage? Just don't get auto attacked.

Assassins and Mages one shotting you? Don't get within range or dodge their skill shots!

These are not productive or meaningful arguments. For one, people shouldn't have to adapt to something we can tell is broken. And two, just don't engage isn't a real tactic, it's a way of marginalizing the already bad situation by just not dealing with it, that's not an acceptable method for anything because nothing happens.

And you're right, there are plenty of champs that can full combo kill you, we should be looking into those too, what's your point? Others champions are broken, so let's continue the trend! Is that what you want? I'd assume not, so let's start with the tanks and work our way down.

Jorencice3 votes

How did you get. "Just dont engage" from "Dont get hit by every single spell a champion has especially one whos full combo requires 3+ seconds and a wall"

That's cool, i mean he was release after the last time Riot said which champs are which subclasses and "Tank" isn't a subclass and the 2 types of "tanks" typically have much more reliable CC and the "tanks" that aren't "tanks" like Mundo that have unreliable or weak CC typically are considered Juggernauts have much higher base damages

Either way it's typically much harder to land an Ornn combo then it is for a Mao to point and click his combo, so it's not really the same. If they're removing his shield they're removing the only Defensive steroid he has which make him the only "tank" in the game without one.

Um. No.

When they released subclasses, tanks were broken up into Wardens, defensive tanks, and Vanguards, offensive tanks. Juggernauts are a subclass of fighters, alongside divers. Ornn is a Vanguard.

If you could find where "Ornn" was classified as a Vanguard by Riot i would agree.

Side note ever Warden and Vanguard has a defensive steroid. If Ornn loses his shield on his W he would be the only one that didn't. Would be an odd thing for a "tank" too not have.

Volibear Yorick Shyvana Multiple Juggernauts have extremely weak defensive steroids though.

Why did you put his name in quotes? That’s...what it is and how it’s spelled.

Ok. From the champion reveal page:

Ornn is a leader on the battlefield. He initiates fights on his terms with Call of the Forge God, then charges in, bellowing and tearing apart his foes with titanic force. https://na.leagueoflegends.com/en/featured/champion-reveal-ornn

Description of a Vanguard. Not enough? From the “Forging Ornn” article:

Since Ornn is League’s first blacksmith champion, there were a lot of ways to approach his gameplay design. In other games, blacksmiths are often NPCs who only exist to supply the main character on their journey. Ornn was never intended to be a part of the supporting cast, in either meaning of the word. “We didn’t want to make a champion who focused on making weapons that buffed their allies,” says game designer Blake “Squad5” Smith. “Ornn was meant to be a powerful vanguard who could hold his own.” https://nexus.leagueoflegends.com/en-us/2017/08/champ-insights-ornn/

Or...how about from when he was teased in the Champion Roadmap in July 2017:

The same can be said for the Tank update; as we honed in on what we felt worked for the Vanguard class, we saw a great opportunity to build a new Vanguard from scratch.

One of the key traits of a Vanguard is that they can choose when and where to start a fight. With that in mind, we wanted to make a new playmaking Vanguard that charged headfirst into tough situations and made the enemy team fight on their terms. We also really wanted to make a very self-reliant champion; expect to see a unique new passive that helps them build more than just character.

Look out for the newest Vanguard, who’ll be heating up one of the coldest regions in Runeterra. Next, let’s look at the updates we have in flight. https://nexus.leagueoflegends.com/en-us/2017/07/champion-roadmap-july-2017/

How’s that?

Edit: since I never addressed your other point: just because Ornn has a harder time landing his CC doesn’t make him less of a tank. Galio is a tank, and both his CCs can be tough to land. Sejuani is a tank and needs 4 melee hits before she can CC one person outside ult. Sion’s considered a tank and his CC is some of the most dodgable skills. Just because Ornn’s 2 Displacements are tough to land doesn’t make him less of a tank. Displacements are some of the strongest short term CC in the game at the moment, and he also carries the Brittle debuff, which debuffs are another element tanks have (not exclusively, but still). He was released as a Vanguard (and possibly an ideal one based on Riot’s and community standards...or at least Riot’s original ones, and in my mind), he has always been a Vanguard, and without the shield he’s still one, just a bit squishier and being shifted more toward damage like a fighter, him and Sejuani, unfortunately.

TheSingularity2 votes

Give me one juggernaut, just one outside of the champ we're debating who has the CC profile of a tank. 3-5 CC spells, often aoe, at least one of which, if not more is hard CC.

I can pick all but 3 tanks who match this description, but they've been given different tools to do their jobs (these are shen, taric and rammus. Who have different tools to achieve their roll).

So. One juggernaut if you will. So there's no mix up, these are juggernauts Darius DrMundo Garen Illaoi Mordekaiser Nasus Udyr Urgot Trundle Volibear Yorick Their common traits: they sacrifice powerful aoe cc and mobility for damage and durability. No strong, instant gapclosers. No aoe hard CC. But crap loads of damage and can be beefy af.

So which one of them has a kit identical in CC might to nautilus? Leona? Ornn? Urgot comes close but is immobile af, deals significantly more damage and is mostly single target CC

Illabethe1 votes

To be fair you kind of screwed up mentioning Udyr, since he does in fact have multiple target CC spam capability. It's not an aoe but you can stun an entire team by switching targets.

You're also leaving out champs:

Aatrox 3 Knockups, a pull and root and slow

Chogath Aoe Silence, Huge knockup, behaves far more like a Juggernaut than a tank.

Gragas Massive aoe knockback, along with a minor aoe knockback/disrupter.

Renekton Insane mobility, Aoe stun, AND damage. Usually builds 4 tank items.

RekSai Insane mobility, multiple knockups, Radar detection and self healing.

TheSingularity2 votes

Gragas is a tank Cho gath is a specialist (riot doesn't know what class he is. He is most accurately a mage/juggernaut hybrid) renekton is a diver rek sai is a diver Yes udyr can stun multiple people, but he can not reliably do it as he must first run onto them. He has a single, hard CC spell that can be applied to multiple people. Nautilus has this as well, it's his passive. naut then has hook, E, R

Aatrox is debatable. Riot hasn't officially released a class but given his toolkit and previous classification as a diver, he is likely still a diver. As divers generally have multiple hard CC eg vi, xin zhao, hec, riven. He is definitely a strange one though, his stat profile is all over the place.

If I ignore the tank you added in there, the rest don't come close to matching nautilus or leona. Renek/rek sai single spell. Cho as mentioned is all over the place, lacks the damage profile of a tank and the CC profile. And as mentioned aatrox is a diver with a rather unusual kit

  1. When Riot released Ornn, they labeled him as a vanguard tank, which is used primarily as an engaged. And while many tanks have more reliable CC, it’s not the reliability of CC that defines a tank. It’s generally the type of CC and how much they have. Sion for example had very unreliable CC, but he still has much more CC than any fighter, carrying two AoE knock ups and two slows. Ornn, has arguably 4 CC abilities in his kit. His Q (the pillar can displace people), his brittle proc, his E when it hits terrain, and his ult that has a slow and a knock up.

  2. The removal of his shield doesn’t make him the only tank without a defensive steroid. Unless you count healing, then Maokai has no defensive steroids since he has no shield or anything that scales off of MR.

  3. Even if you did count healing as a defensive steroid, not having one doesn’t mean you aren’t classified as a tank. Every class has a champion that generally breaks one of the class rules. Hell, that’s usually a general step towards designing a champion. Look at Urgot, he’s a juggernaut with no abilities that heal him (which I believe every juggernaut has) as a result of him being ranged.

Either way it's typically much harder to land an Ornn combo then it is for a Mao to point and click his combo, so it's not really the same. If they're removing his shield they're removing the only Defensive steroid he has which make him the only "tank" in the game without one.

It’s harder for Sion to land his combo than it is for Maokai. Does that make him not a tank? Hell, any tank without a point and click ability has a harder time landing their combo than Maokai.

Illabethe1 votes

Source that Riot labeled him as a Vanguard tank?

From what I recall, they didn't label him at all. They just let him loose on the rift with no solid core advice on role/build/lane/anything. He just SETTLED INTO Top and building Tank, after people realized all his scaling but Q sucks.

But..... I know other champs that have had shitty scaling who are fighters......juggernauts, etc.... some of whom scale off HP....

Forging Ornn article. Linked below by Iota.

Illabethe1 votes

The article mentions the work Vanguard once, and the "Making Of" link attached to it mentions it twice. Neither article mention building tank though. They mention "Holding his Own."

Imo, Ornn tank has always been HP, not Armor or Resist. They have their places in his build, but like any other champion, item choices are meant to be adaptive.

Some of my builds for Ornn consist of over 340 AD and 360 Armor and 188 Mag resist. Q actually does visible damage and the W Brittle hit proc hits like a truck when you add a Sheen to it.
