Does anyone know why Lichbane does not work with GangPlank barrels?

I figure AP GP ult does way more damage than AD GP, but for some reason, the tool that is used to help farm up his ult (his barrels), does not work with lich bane. It works with Trinity force.... but not Lichbane.

So can someone explain to me why?

It only works with physical damage on-hit effects. So no Statikk Shiv proc either on barrels.

That said, I hope they change their minds and make AP GP viable.
