How did Armor/MR stats get thrown out of runes reforged?????

I don't get it, it was a literal staple from season 1 up until runes reforged. I swear this season would of been a million times better if those had stuck in the game.

Imagine having an extra 11 armor early/mid game or 13 MR early/mid game

Agreed. Runes Reforged pretty much started killing this game and it won't ever reach its prime again if we don't get these resistances back.

Removing them was horrendously game-breaking - it killed champion identities and removed strategy and skill expression completely, sucking out most of the fun League had.

It will still be a new system again. Let's just wait for pre-season and hope Riot learned from their mistakes.

They've already posted what it looks like so far, and I copied that post in this thread.

I'm pretty sure it's just going to get ignored because I'm not shitting on Riot, though.

Hard to blame people for not trusting Riot after how they've been treated for an entire year.

In what fucking universe does giving someone free resists introduce skill expression and strategy, pray tell? You either picked resistances if you weren't trolling because they're resistances, or you didn't if you weren't playing comps, what magical decision making exists here that's so skillful, exactly?

It's pretty obvious, but let me clear things up for you:

People do not die as quickly when they have resistances. They need to actually hit multiple spells to kill someone. Hence, dodging skillshots is also significantly more rewarding.

Watch this legendary clip for example:

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=o8vGaC4OZIs

If this happened today, Ryu would have killed Faker with his Duskblade Proc, Electrocute and two autos.

Agree, it sure is fun going against a Kha'zix jungle with no early resistances. Who thought this was a good idea?

Removing the old system in general was a downhill slide for this game.

They ripped away all customization we ever had with the old runes+masteries then used the excuse:

"Oh but the rune system was confusing to new players!"

No it wasn't, you morons. The PAYMENT system was confusing to new players. You know how many hundreds and hundreds of games it took before I could afford a single full rune page? THAT is what was overwhelming me as a new player not the way the runes worked but how much they fucking cost.

if runes were just made free the old masteries+runes system would have been perfect.

No, its because resolve has been tuned to have broken sustain which makes a lot of champions viable. But doesn't help most champions not get bursted (like old mr/armour).

Broken sustain is what is keeping most champions viable - but it doesn't make them feel good to play.

Glaricion2 votes

Every tree is a goddamned mess.

Resolve can give huge sustain/damage reduction/temporary invulnerability. Domination paired with ridiculous items makes .5s> one-shotting standard. Precision gives ridiculous sustained-damage and multi-kill potential. Inspiration is so queer, but just look at the RNG of Klepto and how broken Glacial is.

Everyone's base stats were bumped up with the removal of those runes so it's already carried forward. If it was just totally ignored junglers would get wrecked, ever try low level jungling without those armor runes?

Ragnaveil7 votes

Cool, doesn't help tanks in the slightest. Tell me why Pyke, an Assassin support, has more Armor than Ornn and Maokai, two toplane tanks.

Eedat23 votes

because he cant build health

Leetri8 votes

Because he literally can't increase his HP so his only defence comes from resistances.

Ragnaveil1 votes

Yeah, but you know what the #1 issue with Pyke is currently? His defenses and the fact he's better off going tank instead of assassin.

Kynami6 votes

Which is a side effect of his passive turning the bonus HP from tank items into extra damage while still receiving the benefits of the resists on the cheaper than AD item tank items. More resist heavy tank items faster than you can ever get AD items = potentially much more value from the items he buys because of how his base HP growth is stupidly high because of that passive.

SnugglePuggle9423 votes

From what I've heard, not every champ was bumped with every stat. Some got Mr, some got armor, some got health.

Old runes let EVERY champ you played get the stats.

For instance if you play a sup or mid that didn't get armor, they now start out with even less than they did before so they just get shredded even faster on top of all the extra damage they put in.

So, in that case, Riot did a shitty job with Runes Reforged.

Nut on my Butt3 votes

No they didn't do a shitty job. They gave all champs basically the most popular defensive runes choice that they took. For mid lane mages, this was health, and for everyone else this was armor. Even champs who were aimed for both mid and bot like Zyra actually got double compensated with both stats. Yes, no MR was given, but this was ofc because the mpen reds that EVERY magic damage dealer would take were removed as well as ranged champs gaining an MR growth prior that they never had in the entire history of the game.

Madsin251 votes

I will prove to you they did a shitty job. With my favorite champion. Kennen

His compensation was

+4.5 armor

+5Hp +5hp per level. (190hp at level 18)

They gave him 4.5 armor and 195 hp.

But your logic is that his 0.5 MR per level which makes it the same as the old system at level 9 is somehow OK.

Good thing by lvl 9 the opposing mage has sorcs and oblivion orb doing true damage regardless.

Nut on my Butt1 votes

Why are you pretending that Kennen players somehow got more defensive stats from runes previously than what's given now? Previously from seals, you either took 9 armor OR 216 at lvl 18. Not both. You can't seriously be arguing that either of those are more stat effective than the combination of the 4.5 armor and 195 hp at 18.

Also I think it's funny how people are flipping the script now, whereas a year ago people were concerned that mages would lose too much with the lack of mpen runes to the point where Riot had to add 3 mpen to sorcs to alleviate it, and now people are complaining that there's not enough starting MR. Guess what, if you didn't have any MR built back then and they had those items, you'd still be taking near true damage, but you now also have the option of taking things like nullify orb, and dipping into the resolve tree for bone plating and extra hp that will give you much more survivability in lane than some MR blues would, ontop of scaling later into the game.

flibitydoo1 votes

the resists to mages is the biggest example of a shitty job

statistically, sure you can argue that out of all games played mages were running hp/level seals

but they were running hp/level seals against other mages. Which happen to be the most common class in midlane. in champ select, during select your runes/loadout phase, you would switch to your "I'm battling another mage as a mage" runepage and set your masteries accordingly.

but if you were against a zed or a talon or jayce or some other ad midlane, you would take the armour seals. and if you didn't, then you deserved the 4 reports your teammates give you for feeding.

it's one of the biggest examples of "we don't play the game we just balance around statistics" which is one of the biggest jokes surrounding the balance team and why they consistently fail time after time again.

Ætheist9 votes

Our primary aim this preseason is to generally improve the quality of the time spent you spend in game. We want to keep you in striking distance of a comeback, but if you're really really far behind, the opposing team should be able to get you out of that lost game quicker. I Our four main goals are listed below with their corresponding changes.

Rune paths no longer dictate stat bonuses

https://i.imgur.com/uE92eDc.jpg

After a bunch of iterations and testing we’ve settled on a "pick 3" system for stats:

  • 1 slot is offensive stats only

  • 1 slot is defensive stats only

  • 1 slot is free choice of offense or defensive stats

The updated stats options we're testing:

  • Offensive - Attack Damage, Ability Power, Attack Speed, Scaling Cooldown Reduction

  • Defensive - Armor, Magic Resist, Scaling Health

Stuff we've cut or are not currently considering

  • HP regen - this ends up making lanes where nobody ever dies

  • Flat CDR - In particular this option didn't leave us any way to easily tune it. Any amount of CDR that isn';t a multiple of 5 or 10 doesn't integrate well into the other options you have from items/runes.

  • Scaling resists - These fall into a category where they aren't bad design but when we overall want to limit each slot to ideally 3, maybe 4 choices these didn't make the cut. By the late game these resists are overshadowed by items so the up front resists were more interesting.

Overall we're pretty happy with how the system lets you build a well tailored set of stats that enhance your champion's strengths without a lot of the deadweight that existed in the old system. Defensive choices allow you to make some strategic choices around your opponent/s. "Do I try to counter my lane opponent or prepare for the late game?" "Do I greed into double offense or play it safe with defense?"

.......what? Are people unaware that almost all champs got base armor and/or HP buffs to compensate?

How did Armor/MR stats get thrown out of runes reforged?

Market analysis dictated that other MOBA games were coming on to the scene and that some of the League of Legends player base had begun to play them... They had shorter game durations, and so Riot Games decided that League had to be faster paced to stay competitive, and DO BETTER what other games were doing.

This meant hamfisting snowball mechanics, and jacking up respawn timers, and introducing paper turrets, and rift hearlds, and of course... GUTTING resistances eventually so people die faster... to speed up the game... so it makes people have as much "fun" as those other competing games.

As if armor and mr actually meant something. Right now it feels like a waste of gold because everything does so much flippin damage. You can have 200+ armor and still get deleted in 2.2.

Ætheist3 votes

You're getting the option to take Armor and/or MR again in preseason when they add the sub-runes. See the most recent Preseason Update in the Dev Corner.

Ahris3 votes

Did Riot give every champ extra mr and armor already? You need to revert that if you want runes that have armor and mr

SnugglePuggle941 votes

No. Not all of them got it. Most only got one, whether it be health, armor or mr but not all. So they still start out with less than they usually do in the other stats.

Laceration2 votes

old runes had 24 lethality but was still balanced, new runes have 7 and people complain

Ragnaveil17 votes

It was balanced do to the fact armor was available in runes, and not being thrown in as a bonus for waiting 10 minutes, while it also being a shitty amount. Jump to now, and even if you get a cloth armor, that still wont save you from all the extra damage that was added into the game.

Eedat6 votes

almost all champs had the flat armor yellows added directly to their base stats

NineTailedMystic1 votes

Most Mages got HP/level yellows though.

Eedat1 votes

and most mages got base HP and HP/lvl compensation

NineTailedMystic2 votes

...That's what I meant even if it didn't sound like it. Runes Reforged gave them their 216 HP at level 18, but that's pretty shit when everyone took 9 Flat Armor when against an AD Assassin which is infinitely better than scaling HP.

Shablagoo1 votes

Because most mages went hp per lvl lol.

NineTailedMystic2 votes

...and most swapped out for flat Armor against AD mids.

Shablagoo1 votes

And how many mages do you play against on average? They did it because the majority of midlaners are mages, there is a hand few of ad mid laners. It was either give hp/lvl or armor. Wouldnt it make sense to give them the majority rune because they face the majority

NineTailedMystic2 votes

Yes but the point is there was the option of switching.

Shablagoo1 votes

Which was removed, so they did the most practical thing you cant really blame them for this.

meowwow72 votes

the reason they got rid of the starting res runes was because conditioning was being picked more from what they said

Kynami1 votes

Might have had something to do with the other options being a mere 5 ar or mr and conditioning being 10 of both with a better bonus... the tank wants as much as possible and in the case of a single resist type pick they can build an item against their laner first and actually be better off. Heck, cloth +pots was a better option than wasting a rune slot on just 5 armor. You can assign gold values to a lot of the runes and the two that they removed were substantially sub-par.

meowwow71 votes

yeah they were very lack luster 5 armor/mr and a little boost if you were under potion effect. i just hope the resistance on the new rune stats isn't like this

Hibeki2 votes

No they did because the armor and mr separate runes were OVERWHELMINGLY picked.
