(Autofill) To change something, build a new model that makes the old model obsolete

“You never change things by fighting against the existing reality. To change something, build a new model that makes the old model obsolete.” - Buckminster Fuller

Everyone hates autofill (AF). Even the people it was supposed to help. Riot didn't understand that people complaining about queue times didn't mean they wanted quicker games. They meant they wanted quicker ideal games. This says to me they don't have enough Right-Brained people up there, but I digress.

Riot seems to want AF here to stay. So rather than say get rid of it, I thought I'd suggest small changes that might find consensus.

  1. I want the ability to prevent others from getting AF. If I get filled, I suck it up, I have some champs I can play reasonably well, and I roll with the punches. Others I've seen do not. So I'd suggest that - if I'm willing to queue up as Fill in total (FiT)- I shouldn't be put with other people who are getting filled.

  2. If the goal is a reduction of queue times, three things should happen:

  • Allow people to "Lexus Nexus queue (LNQ)" - meaning "i'll take anything except Top" for example. That's a possible 4 roles, rather then only 2 or 5.

  • Incentivize the FiT - Bike shares do this. If they need bikes, concentrated in one part of town moved to a less concentrated part, they'll pay their members a small amount to bring the bikes to area that need them. Everyone wins. If the goal is to find 5 people to fill the pre-ordained roles, then incentivize people to grease the wheels. Make everything faster.

  • Let the stubborn suffer. This is actually something Riot does poorly writ large. If someone wants to wait in a 10 minute queue, rather than get AF, take FiT, or LNQ - let them. That makes for a better game type for the rest of us. Eventually they'll break.

  1. Remove AF from Normals. The biggest gap Riot has right now is a game mode where people can choose the champ/lane they want - or even the champ they want. That's a bit of an oversight. Right now you can't even train up on a champ that's popular in picks/bans unless it's over 100 games. That seems foolish. Rather than prevent people from doing things (like choosing the champ they want) or making them do things (like AF) Riot should switch to a model of incentivizing the thing they want. Removing AF from Normals won't solve this problem, but it will go a long way in giving people a reason to choose Normals over Ranked.

u really still have no idea why they even added autofill do you?

let me explain it to you.

SUPPORT SECONDARIES.

try being given support 30 games in a row because its your secondary role. (thats NOT an exaggeration, i actually got it THIRTY times in when they had draft pick early on in season 6 without autofill)

everything else it fixes is just icing.

what it did was stop the downward spiral of everyone who was a support secondary WILLING to play support NO LONGER willing to play support because if they put it as an option they would NEVER get anything else.

this ins turn made the remaining support secondaries get it even more, then made more of them take it off. and so on and so forth.. until que times rose to absurd levels because no one was willing to support anymore, even the people who initially were willing to.

THAT is what "autofill" fixed

You mean to suggest to me that there were what I can only assume was a small minority of people who off-roled Support, they were suffering, and that - of all things - Riot decided to intervene on?

Doubtful. Riot rarely fixes problems without immense pressure. I very much doubt this small inconvenience was something they came in on.
