Malphite is extreme powerful right now

And potentially broken. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if he became a highly contested pick at worlds.

Let's look at why he's so good right now. For starters, armor nerfs across the board should theoretically hurt him, right? Not quite, I made a post about this about a month ago. True tanks, with innate defensive steroids in the form of %damage reduction, resist steroids or passive resists weren't really hurt with these changes much. Regardless, they'd still be incredibly hard to kill. Malphite fits this role perfectly because of his passive, which is nothing to scoff at and his new W, which passively gains armor instead of relying on an active. Sure, he lost out on more potential armor but in exchange, his armor is always increased.

With item 3110 and item 3068 and maxing W second can easily have close to 300 armor by mid game. This is an absurd amount in the mid game because carriers aren't going to have any %pen, not to mention his E absolutely shuts down any hope of dpsing him down, it shits on ADCs dependent on auto attacks regardless. I've been saying this makes him pretty much auto win vs any heavy AD/AA comp, especially against AA heavy top laners and champions like Gnar who never really have any hope of killing him.

Let's look at what's meta right now, particularly what Malphite is extremely good against. For bot lane, the most common picks I've been seeing are Vayne, Ashe and Tristana. With new item 3143, item 3047 and reinforced armor in the defensive tree (which stacks additively with randuins, if I'm not mistaken), Malphite takes a shit ton of reduced damage from crits. Ashe can never really kill him. Malphite is also incredibly good against Yasuo for this reason, and he's also very good with him - another reason you'll be potentially seeing him. Vayne and Trist aren't super depedent on Crit because of their ability to do damage with spells but they still do build it and both are pretty big on attack speed, something Malphite absolutely shuts down and because of unstoppable force, he's likely going to always be reducing their attack speed unless the carries are able to flash out of it, which effectively zones them out of a teamfight anyway.

I don't know if this means Malphite is absurdly broken or if he's just extremely good with and against this meta. But either way, I wouldn't be surprised if he starts popping up on your ban lists soon once worlds hit and post 5.18 after some of the juggernauts have been toned down. But I do know he's definitely incredibly good regardless. And I suspect we will be seeing that soon.

Malphite is strong, but he's not broken. He is a very good tank, but of course if he's built full tank, he's going to be used for his damage soak and CC, not his damage. Even if he does ignore everything, he's not going to do a lot of damage unless you incorporate some AP into his build. And of course, since he's armor-based, he's not going to be good for every enemy teamcomp.

Malphite with a full armor build still does a shit ton of damage to squishies, bare in mind his E scales with armor, has a decent base damage on top of his ult having pretty good base damage. And his W gives him more sustained damage to boot. He doesn't destroy targets with an excession of 150 MR, but if you're Ad and reliant on AS, he can basically kill you in a wet noodle fight - which would obviously never happen but still, it's more about the fact he's capable of solo killing carries with a full tank build.

And I'm not sure how he's not universally good, his ult is arguably the best initiation spell in the game and he's one of the few champions left with anti carry mechanics, something that's always good.

And for record, I'm not saying he's broken either. I think he could potentially end up being overtuned because the different things new armor items do are huge buffs to him in exchange for their nerfs in values, something he doesn't really care about much because of his W. But broken innately? Nah.

Orianna is easily the best initiator in the game with her ult. Using it by herself or on an ally can make insane plays, especially on someone like Alistar.

I think Malphite's anti-carry features are invaluable though. The fact he can remove enormous amounts of attack speed, stacks armor for days, and has pretty good damage for not even building any AP/AD is great. He can be a really big issue for hypercarries like Vayne or Tristana and can totally invalidate them with his kit.

Quiet when rito release Malphite shits on Vayne and Kalista they nerf him into the ground.

Orianna needs an ally to typically get off a good ult, which is why Shyv + Ori comps have always been popular. It's very good but I don't think I'd call it an initiator tool as much as I'd call it follow up or counter engage more than anything

dont forget he was used as a fiora counter in the Korea finals. Mostly cause AS slow. I feel like a lot of worlds is gonna be countering Fiora (which i feel some of the juggernauts do) and maybe gangplank, but maybe not as much as before with all these nerfs.... i hope for the sake of OG that he is still viable

his damage becomes negligable when enemy buys an Aegis. Unless he's running abyssal/sorcs/lindries with his build, then yes his initial burst is nice.

i agree buff malphite

Crap I meant extremely but it won't let me edit the title. I'm a Nasus main, my ability to switch buttons probably lagged out and didn't register when I went to go change the title. Hotfix wherE?

Asking for your opinion, why would you play nasus when Garen or Darius exists at the moment? As a former Nasus main I think he's kind of garbage now.

Love of the champion, that's about it. I'm so happy with the fighter changes but it was quite literally the biggest "fuck you" riot could do to Nasus. And they won't buff him, people would lose their minds.

I'd say he's REALLY good against high AD teams, which I think is fine (its the niche that he* occupies; he's like the Galio of AD champions), decent in other situations; pretty meh against high AP teams.

Great at diving the backline and crippling the enemy carry though, so thats a thing (I honestly really like his E, gives him something unique to only him, he can essentially cripple anyone who relies on AS)

*I guess Rammus sort of occupies this spot as well.

He's just really good against the meta right now. He does great against any of the AD champs.

He's good regardless because AP Malph is still a thing and it absolutely wrecks face. It's not as reliable to do well in lane as consistently as tank Malphite but assuming he's snowballing, he can say fuck all that armor noise and go abyssal + Rabadons and one shot a squishy with one full rotation

your argument about 'shutting down' adc is far more effectively accomplished with nasus and wither. thats the reason nasus was picked in worlds before. Malphite is still known to be good, especially with the right team comps, but its not about him shutting down any adc or being hard to kill, its because he has a very strong hard engage tool.

Nasus has been picked in worlds once since season 2, it was season 3 Vulcan vs FNC and they picked YORICK into Nasus lol. Nasus isn't nearly as good at neutralizing ADCs as malph is because cleanse shits on wither. Malph has a hard engage tool, which makes him good no matter what. But he either zones a carry for a good duration or sits in the middle of a team smashing E and killing any DPS a team has if they depend on auto attacks.

Malphite is a well designed champ and is quite balanced. I'd be surprised if he gets pick/band at worlds.

malphite is absurdly broken and is lacking any kind of counterplay atm

you need a full build to deal with a 3 items malphite

needs nerfs ASAP

ninjaIRL 1 votes

You said that Vayne needs spells to deal damage so they aren't super dependent on crit. I'd disagree. Vayne sourced 95% of her damage from her autoattacks. Her condemn obviously does a bit of damage but it can't stop a malphite ulting to her. Malphite's ultimate is pretty hard to dodge when you're in a tight spot. The anti-crit build you mentioned also has Attack speed slowing debuffs on it so that will reduce vayne's W proccing speed. The small knock up that you can do to her is enough time for your team to properly followup to delete her and/or drop a pink/Sweeping Lense Trinket. Without your ult you're dead against a Vayne but Malphite's ultimate is in a relatively low to moderate cooldown late game. The addition of Frozen Heart further lowers the CD.
