"We're nerfing the movement speed buff duration on Garen"

Decisive Strike (Q) movement speed duration reduced to 1.5/2/2.5/3/3.5 from 1.5/2.25/3/3.75/4.5

Hey guys,

Here to give you guys an update on a last minute change we're making to Garen before the patch release.

We currently feel that Garen has retained too much of his mobility on top of the new strengths that we've given to the Juggernauts which is making him a bit too powerful along too many dimensions.

Specifically, we feel his mobility uptime gets far too hard to deal with in the mid - late game especially once he gets ahead.

Thus we are putting in a nerf to his Q Movement Speed duration. It's important to note that the Q Movement Speed duration has been inaccurate on PBE (it was 1.5 - 4.5 seconds instead of the tooltip-stated 2 - 4), so there is no actual change to his rank 1 MS besides the tooltip correction. -Statikk

Okay, okay. I get it. But are we all just going to ignore the fact that 40 % CDR Riven can out run even current Garen with Boots of Swiftness late game?

So Riven outruns Garen. So what? Riot doesn't care so much about VS match ups as much as they do team contribution.

Uh, you realize that, if new Garen catches you alone past level 11, he does more damage than Riven in a lot of scenarios, right?

you do realize that even after the changes all garen can do is walk at you, right?

That trope of Garen hiding in a bush isn't there for no reason. Garen is also not a bad choice for split pusher/pressure top lane, so long as he knows when to do it.

yeah ok sure... but i have one more question

Decisive Strike (Q) movement speed duration reduced to 1.5/2/2.5/3/3.5 from 1.5/2.25/3/3.75/4.5

lets compare those numbers shall we?

from 1.5/2.25/3/3.75/4.5

to 1.5/2/2.5/3/3.5

lvl1 same lvl2 -.25 lvl3 -.5 lvl4 -.25 lvl5 -1

there is very little difference until you max Q....what garen maxes Q first? That being said it only has a significant effect at the earliest, like lvl 13 ish since you pretty much max spin to win first under almost every circumstance?

how handicapped is he really?

If you want to make a thread to complain about Riven, you can probably do that without pretending to make it a thread about Garen.

Who cares who can run away from Garen? Garen's whole deal is that IF he catches you you're pretty much screwed. His speed boost is just enough to force enemies to blow their escapes.

This is the basis of his current live team fighting. He doesn't have CC to catch people, or mobility to dive well. What he has is the ability to punish anyone who is out of position. People who don't understand this get rolled, and people who do end up focusing on positioning a little more than they should.

It's a bit like the pressure Blitz has just by holding onto his Q. It doesn't instantly change a 5v5 into a 4v5 of course, but it is still enough to adjust the layout of a team fight before it happens.

And let's not forget the addition of Dead Man's Plate. The rest of Garen's kit was adjusted based on new items, it only makes sense that this part was as well.

Before his changes, it was never -if- it was -when-. new Black Cleaver, Boots of swiftness and Dead Man's plate ensures Garen finds his mark.

All of those items do the same thing post update. All the Q change does is add in a little more counterplay to the inevitability that is Garen running you down.
