To be honest, this game went completely down hill in Season 6

When two things were added to the game:

Dynamic Queue - nobody wanted it. Riot took surveys that were misleading and framed in a positive light without revealing their intentions and used those as evidence that “most people wanted it” (E.G., “Would you enjoy the idea of playing with your friends in ranked games?” without disclosing that this would replace solo queue). Despite backlash, Riot was insistent on this and god only knows why - maybe it was their pledge to launch Esports into its next phase of greatness with League being the premier game, maybe it was pros wanting this for more practice. I don’t really know why. But people hated it and Riot refused to change it for an entire year. And this arguably has been one of the biggest causes of the fractured relationship between riot and its community.

Keystones - considerably less controversial, but they are proving to be one of the biggest disasters this game has ever seen. Most champions were not created or balanced around the concept of something so powerful existing freely to everyone. They are one of the biggest reasons damage is out of control and snowballing is insane. They also are hilariously biased towards offense while defense has one useful keystone. Runes/masteries were simple and boring but it’s because they needed to be. It was out of necessity. They are too gamebreaking and have forced so much powercreep in this game. While they are “cool,” they do too much and need to be straight up removed. You can take a lot of tree’s features now because those are cool without being gamebreaking, but keystones themselves have to go.

Ever since both these things were introduced, Riot’s player relations and the game itself have been significantly worse. And honestly, i think this is also around the same time Riot really dig down and took the “we know best” stance and basically told their playerbase where they can stick it.

I can't think of a single thing of value that would be lost if keystones were removed. Maybe I'm in the minority, but I liked setting up my own rune pages/masteries to suit my playstyle and/or make up for my champion's weaknesses.

The newer rune system doesn't really offer much choice and seems to favor ranged champions and mobile melees that deal burst damage.

The old system never really offered “real choices” either but they weren’t overpowered as fuck either.

Masteries didn't I agree, but the runes did offer "some" choice based on who you were playing (i.e. crit pages, gold per level, all resistances, sustain, etc).

I used to like to spec into CDR, HP per level , MS and/or lifesteal. Pages like this were optimal for the champs I played back when I only played Dominion. Back then, capping CDR actually used to take some effort, especially for bruisers, so that felt like an accomplishment for me. Now everyone gets those things, plus a truckload of free damage and %based amplifiers. It's actually pretty insane how out of hand things have gotten compared to years past.

Remember back when they removed Brutalizer and nerfed early penetration so everyone wasn't blowing up so easy early on? It's like they've just completely forgotten about all of their past mistakes.

The difference between that buddy buddy team cooperation/communication and not is 100% the most broken thing in the game. When you go up against a team that's on discord made up of friends that commit to each others calls right away its the most obvious BS in the game. It is unbelievably effective and some how me and the other 4 strangers on my team are supposed to be able to compete with this? Are you kidding me? I am a player whom never enjoyed real solo que and even I am dream of those days, sad how I missed out.

In all likely hood... the reason they force solo que players to play with duo's + is because because those of us that play alone probably out number them b a lot, not to mention they don't always form entire teams opting more so for 2-3 people. This means the solo que players must not only act as filler but the games balance is sacrificed in order to make duo que reasonably short.

Imo DQ was Riots first try to keep playerbase from just leaving the game. Somewhere is S5 they most likely noticed that growth period for LOL is over and now it slowly goes or soon will go into decline. DQ seemed like perfect solution at that time "it's more fun with friends, fun = good". Problem is, it didn't fit the game.

The current issue with matchmaking IMO comes from the fact the matchmaker has to create teams from a bag that's slowly shrinking. So it's bound to make exceptions just to keep relatively fast game finding.

Another thing is Riot pushing their fat bum to asian market, because there even the worst declining games have still several times more players than LOL at its peak. So they are forcing games to be faster, arcade'y and that they'd end within 20 minutes, so asian players that usually use gaming cafees could get at very least those 3 games per hour.

Oh and chineese gaming market has flagged Riots LOL for too revealing female champion skins etc, so if you'll ever wonder why female champs suddenly get VU and her front is more covered, then there you know why.

Another thing. Anyone that remembers old forums/boards from S3-5 should remember the thread traffic along with usual upvotes on "big threads". Votes were going in thousands. Now? It's miracle if it gets to 100 upvotes. Not to mention hardly any new threads pop in in boards. I know it's pretty iffy to talk about playerbase count via player activity on forum, but it's just yet another sign, that shouldn't be ignored.

I am not saying the game is dead. But Riot surely will kill it for western/european audience just to make sure game will have a solid base in asia.

The old forums didn't have butthurt mods that would shit themselves if there was a naughty word anywhere

Saianna1 votes

I'd say its left wing with its 'hate speach' propaganda (that's what i got banned twice - a joke and.. 'snowflake' word, each time for 14 days)

TyroneWatermelon1 votes

its not a leftist propaganda (i know you righties are paranoid), its a shitty attempt in making the boards "a better experience" for everyone, getting rid of negativity and such to make more productive discussions. but some basement mods are taking it too far.

Saianna1 votes

I'm sorry but you do realize the hate speach came from the left right? as an argument right side is bad wrong toxic and they want to eat your babies and steal your money and rape your wives. That was the idea behind hate speach. No matter what right says it is HATE they HATE.

But that aside, imo its left wing propaganda, because I had spoken with mods to try to defend my case. If anything they wanted to permaban me for using word "snowflake". No mate, it isn't just "a better experience". It gone into ideology.

I would say in about 2 years it will face a huge decline if Riot keeps fking with the game.

APEX already swept Fortnite's spotlight under its feet and left Epic Games in a shocked/surprised state when most would swear not even a few months ago that Fortnite would be the next big thing for the near future.

Who knew there was a crowd urging for a competitive, polished, good netcode, no bulshit, no (big) gimmicks, GOOD DESIGN DECISIONS game in which individual skill matters and comes first?

Not Riot for sure.

Most people underestimate or have forgotten why Counter-Strike beta, 1.0 , 1.6 and so on, was and is still big for more than 20 years. Let that 20+ YEARS sink in...

And APEX Legends has that right gunplay feel, that emergent gameplay packed with all the above stuff which is why CS became big in the first place.

LoL has almost lost that completely.

I don't see many playing LoL by 2022, let alone 2025 and beyond.

Season 3-4 iirc. I think that’s when boards were launched.

And snowball returned...even though no one truly enjoys it...

snowball meta is always better than "better bot wins" meta to which we're heading right now.

Assuming you don't mind being frustrated about how impossible a decent recovery is to achieve. Isn't that why snowball was nerfed in the first place?

LTK KoRo1 votes

I'd rather lose because enemies played early game better than me and snowballed their advantage instead of losing because enemy botlane is better than mine and outscales everyone after two items.

I don't know why people dislike snowballing but enjoy the slow metas where only bot and tanks matter.

Because it feels hopeless, especially solo-queue, when the enemy got one solid advantage because you drew the short straw and have ONE teammate screw you over. Heck, I had TWO games, in a row, where I had a jungle ivern screw us over; once because he did nothing but farm and let us get screwed, the other because he was "first time" and fed (Especially on a jax, donating a red buff the first time and burying top). Honestly, it feels stupid when you have to invest 10 times the effort than it should require, just to have a 50-50 chance by late game..

35 minute game averages, low snowballing, one of only two tank METAs ever? Literally none of that matches current LoL at all.

The last time the overall trend in League's quality was neutral or positive was season 3. Starting w/ S4's preseason? A rather depressing downward trend.

I wish HoN's devs would've originally went with a F2P model.
The early competition might've kept LoL's devs on the right track.

I do find myself missing my 20% crit runes every now and then.

Though seemingly minor, excluding the price it took to get them all, they did offer some fun setups.

I belive that recent changes (bounties, turret plating), are actually managing to pull back the game quality.

At least that's my personal experience.

I think the game started that infamous streak of detrimental changes 3 years ago because at Riot they started seeing signs of stagnation/contraction in the playerbase and they started to feel the pressure from competitors.

So they took the corporate decision to speed up the game in order to appeal to the market trends. Everything must be new and crazy to keep people invested in the game (Keystones OP, new super items, questionable champion designs etc..).

The process of speeding up the game was achieved in the worst way possible, increasing snowball, damage, and buffing/nerfing whatever means to close a game (paper turrets, Baron OP, minions pushing etcm).

Season 6?

I'd say you were being generous. Season 5 and it's clusterfuffle that was class reworks really drove League off the cliff.

A series of bad ideas, miscommunication, mismanagement and misunderstanding that caused way more harm than good. Harm, even to this day (e.g. Malzahar, Tanks, Juggernauts), that requires constant bandaids, item changes and full reworks.

ZaFishbone1 votes

Keystones themselves aren't to blame. How about we stop blaming the symptoms, and instead we at least blame the actual causes? They could have toned down the dmg anytime they wanted, it was NO ACCIDENT that damage skyrocketed so much, but an intended design decision. And I know EXACTLY what the reason for that was. CC and mobility creep and unique/broken mechanics on new champions basically made it almost impossible to get kills against skilled players with the previous damage output, no matter how skilled the other player was himself, so dmg had to be buffed to compensate.
