So I just had a game of league

GlockHammer··71 votes·3,470 views

After not having played for like... 3-4 months or so. Mind you I am lvl 25ish and suck at this game.

So either way, matchup goes as, we get 0 lvl 30's, they get two, I'm our highest lvl player at lvl 25, that is to say me(26?). Also, their lvl 30 are mid gold and mid plat.

Ofc, we got totally steamrolled.

I won't whine about the matchmaking system, as we all already know it's broken, I just came in to say I'm sad it's still that way.

Yeah I just made a post about it. After 3 years it's still incredibly broken. Someone playing bronze is likely to get gold or even diamond in their games. It's even more likely if you're playing Normals or ranked for the first time for it to be extremely imbalanced.

The first Normals game I ever played years ago : my team: Unranked, Unranked, Bronze, Silver, Bronze team 2: silver, gold, gold, unranked, bronze

totally balanced.

and I did a test of this shit again recently on a new account and it has not changed.

You don't even have to look at peoples' ranks or wins to observe during the game how imbalanced it is. Every game at lower levels is a steamroll because of how imbalanced the matchmaking is.

The only problem is that its hard to balance out the match making system. There are a couple reasons such as smurfs and elo boosting. Also, your MMR practically decides who you fight. Let's say this gold player got instagold in his 10 provisional games and he never played rank again that season. This results him in having a low MMR because he doesn't play rank. Then, there's this typical bronze player who keeps trying to get out of "elo hell" and have about the same MMR as this gold. These two players might get matched up because of their MMR similarity. But people who don't play rank will always have a low MMR. Some of them who don't play rank might played league for years for fun and are pretty good at the game. These people might get matched up with inexperienced player due to their low MMR.

GlockHammer3 votes

Be so it may, as far as I'm concerned, going up against a team that not only has a more experience, but also more masteries and more runes.

Something just seems blatantly broken with that.

Aerilus2 votes

It's only hard to balance because they rely on ELO, which is based on a few not exactly reliable factors.. Elo gain and loss based on whether you won or lost, and who you won or lost against. Which is an indicator of skill, but not a direct correlation. When there's 10 players it doesn't account for things like bad compositions or someone doing really well despite their teammates having lots of deaths, as far as I know it doesn't account for CS, Damage Dealt, Damage Received, KDA, at all. These factors are not perfect indicators of skill, but they are just as much of an aspect of skill as elo yet they are entirely ignored as far as I know.

i agree with u m8,especially in normals it sucks completly,im s1 and i get a team with 2 silvers and 2 golds vs 3 plats and 2 diamonds and im like gg be4 even starting ...

Judging from your knowledge of terms like "mid plat, broken matchmaking system", it is probable that your account is a smurf. While the way you claim things happened, indeed sounds unfair, smurfs are probably a little more prone to unbalanced matchmaking.

That said, research suggests that over 95% of the games where you build 6 longswords fall on the "we got totally streamrolled" category.

Matchmaking takes so long to estimate accurately, it doesn't even pick up smurfs till they've played 40+ games, and even then you still get them pretty often. This is on my first level 30 account.

Smurfs appear all over in low level games so the new people quickly learn the terminology.

Well, I actually rushed IE (don't know if that was such a great idea) since I have 0 clue about buildorders and such now since the introduction of new items/trinkets etc.

I actually just build 6ls towards the end of the game out of pure frustration. The game was over anyway and it beat the hell out of taking it out on my teammates instead. Also, ironically I ended up killing more champs with those 6longswords than I did during the rest of the game. :> Longswords = skill. :D

Well, this acc is pretty old and I've been on forums since I started playing which explains why I understand alot of stuff many casuals wouldn't understand? But I'm still a noob mechanicswise. SInce my mechanics simply suck? Since I haven't really played that many games? Why do you otherwise think I favor trynda? :D Hueh. He's mechanically a cakewalk to play but does require good judgement to win with. Ergo, perfect for me. I do have a smurf, that I used once or twise, that I have now entirely forgotten both the name and password to, but this is my main acc.

Just created a new account to level 30. Unranked. First 10 games - 3 had diamonds, 6 had golds, all had at least some silver. I don't play ranked.

The diamonds all dominated easily 1v4 or 1v5 except 1 who was probably on a friends account. The diamonds and golds always had higher kills cs and gold than everyone in the game by far. The bronze and unranked people had 15-30 cs 2-3 kills, 5+ deaths, 2-4 assist while the gold /diamonds averaged 5/2/10 at least every time. Totally fair games right :P

These games usually consist of a smurf or two wandering the map ganking every lane and annihilating all the unranked/new players easily, and then team flames and plays even worse. The smurfs continue to dominate.

Sometimes you get equal amount of smurfs on each team and it's a little more balanced. But the smurfs just pick off the newer players when the enemy smurfs aren't around for easy gold advantage.

Aazzlano1 votes

Which account was this on? Name/server please

I mean the only times I see unranked players are when I have a Diamond/Master player duoing with them or a bronze player. Or if they used to play ranked but don't anymore. So I'm just trying to see what MMR the games are that you are experiencing this in.

and Ranked MMR literally means nothing for normals, someone could play bots to 30, with a few normals thrown in the mix, then play ranked exclusively to Challenger, then come back to normals and have a low normals MMR.

Aerilus1 votes

Anyone who creates a new account and plays normals will get anyone from Unranked to Golds (very very rarely plat) in their games. The allowed skill difference is WAY too high in my opinion. I don't think I ever played 1 normal game that didn't have at least 1 gold in it, and I never played rank on that account.

This is really really sad, because while I get people who are way better than me in my games, I also get people who are way worse than me, this is in no way fair to those people who are less skilled than I am. I am having trouble enough with these smurfs and shit that have played 1000s of more games than me, I can't imagine what the newer people are experiencing in these matches where they literally have no chance.

I don't care if normal and ranked mmr are separate, but they should still at least use each other as a factor. There is no good reason someone gold or plat in ranked goes to play normals and they get matched with Unranked... yet it's extremely common.

KoKoboto3 votes

tfw the enemy team is talking trash and is all plat diamond while your team is all silver gold :(

Akunaitsu2 votes

I had the same experience before, our team with me and my friend the only two silver rest unranked, and for some reason we got a diamond player on the enemy's. However I actually appreciated this opportunity to learn from the pros, I find it a good experience.

DirkTarTar2 votes

I'm unranked and love playing norms against golds, plats and the occasional diamonds. But it gets old pretty quick and it's kind of silly that they end up in my MMR (mostly because I am dirt tier) when their ranking clearly states that they should have had a higher MMR to begin with.

Some crossover would be nice. Norms can be brutal because you can be teamed up with bronze and silver against a team of gold and plats, sprinkled with the unranked, but Ranked can be brutal because everyone you play with is basically just as terrible as you are. Some crossover of the MMR would make sense to some extent. Not that you should be able to climb divisions by playing Norms, but if you have 500+ Norm wins and roll into Ranked for the first time then you should have something taken into account. Same goes for those that have 500+ Ranked wins and are rolling into the Norm arena after not playing for a super long time and their MMR was super terrible before they got hooked on Ranked.

Idk... maybe im a heretic.

I can see ranked mmr affecting normals, but not the other way around. A way to "balance" normal play, without affecting your competitive performance.

The problem I see is that if I do well when tryharding, I'm going to get rekt when I want to play Ashe jungle in norms.

And before you complain, yes, ashe jg is a thing. I run AS reds and quints, and I can do krugs -> red -> blue -> gromp -> wolves -> raptors by 4:27 with no leash.

Also, Ashe jg has a wonderful clear. She has a somewhat less wonderful early dueling potential.

You piqued my curiosity. I tried Ashe myself and it was not awful to a surprising extent. I was able to do a full clear in 4:18 and maybe better if I hadn't oom'ed myself.

Thanks! I might have to try this out somewhere in a session of derping around in normals.

you should realize, that there is a separate mmr for normal and ranked

Aerilus1 votes

They can still be separate without having them ignored completely when matchmaking for the other game type.

Normals should have their own mmr, but use ranked mmr as a factor in considering. Ranks should have their own mmr, but could use normal mmr as a factor.

When they are ignored completely on the perspective game type then this is a major factor in imbalanced matches because people playing their first 1-50 normal games ever can be matched up with golds+ on a regular basis.

And yes, they might learn from the experience, but, getting squashed for their first 20 games and getting flamed for dying because every game they have to fight against people who have been playing this game for years, they might just give it up early.

Bladerunner77771 votes

When I was around level 20 I was happy to be matched against bronze and silver. I considered people equally skilled to me low gold. I got really scared against plats.

Then I started ranked and realized how hard it is to climb at first. What I realized is that in all of my normal games, I didn't carry any of them. I could get fed but I was an objective noob and ran around all game chasing kills, I relied on a higher elo guy on my team to lead the charge and I just used my kill advantage.

Basically, gold and below you shouldn't really worry about laning (if you're comfortable with your champ) but the difference between silver and plat is that plat players know how to finish games and do objectives (I didn't say bronze and plat because bronze has too large of a sample size and sh*ts crazy in there)

GlockHammer2 votes

That's just the thing, I understand your sentiment but it has little to do with my own experience. I don't play ranked as I'm not there yet, and when I get there I don't intend to start as I've heard from a decent share of friends that have moved on from this game, that the ambient is extremely hostile at best, which scares me considering how toxic people can be in normals.

Also, while I would like to get better at the game, it kind of seems like a dead end for me as I have alot of stuff to do irl at the moment and because this game seems to demand alot of attention from anyone looking to climb or improve (just look at pros training 12 hours a day etc). Ergo, why I play casually.

Isn't there a difference between your mmr in and out of different play styles? Like someone who plays ranked a lot will have high mmr there, but crap mmr in blinds and non-rank drafts.

I remember when I used to fear people who were level 30's... now when I see golds and plats it's a whoopdido.

But srsly being below level 30 was a frustrating time in this game...

Declined1 votes

What if I say rank != skill?

You don't know for certain who you're up against. When I started playing ranked I was placed in bronze 2, by the end of the season I was Plat 2.

About a year ago I played on a smurf, probably around level 7 and I had a team full of absolute newbies, i didn't want to ruin their game so I kept a low profile, right untill an opposing Yi scored a tripple/quadra on the steps to our base and became exceedingly rude, started bragging about being a gold smurf, and that we were all noobs.

I decided to clean clean up his act, so I killed him and most of his team. Rather than chasing the rest I pushed towers, turned the match around, singlehandedly won the next teamfight and finished the game.

All I wanted was a clean match, and I were happy just laying low, so don't judge players by their rank or level, play the game, have fun and improve.

Without a decent champ pool and full runes/masteries it doesn't matter who win or lose as long as you have fun.

I am of the opposite opinion. Playing vs skilled players makes you more skilled. Keep it the way it is and look at those matches as a chance to learn. You'll never get better if you don't get your shit pushed in every now and then.

That's just the thing bro, I don't play this game often enough to get skilled regardless, I just want to have even and enjoyable matches. But I had like 3 of those last year. Hadn't played since I first posted this. Gonna give it another shot and see if I get a good game of if it will be another stomp, wether in my my favor or not, (they are equally boring imo).

Matchups tend not to be very consistent until after you've reached lvl30. Don't give up, it gets a lot more bearable as the matchups start to align more toward your level of skill.

Worst Kench NA1 votes

I don't understand how so many of you guys get people ranked gold and silver. The highest ranks I ever see are high bronze, so I guess I'm a matchmaking anomaly.

Aerilus1 votes

I don't think you're actually looking, because on my first account I get more golds and silvers in my game than Unranked, when I don't even play ranked. I've gotten platinum quite a few times too but usually it's lots of golds. I'm probably better than the average new player because I've played lots of fast paced clicking RTS and similar games, but still doesn't make sense cause most of these ranked gold or plats in my game are way better than me. And I have people in my game who are also way worse than me... so you have those 2 players with a HUGE skill difference in the same games, and that's what makes low ELO games a complete joke.

GlockHammer1 votes

I boy did I regret it...

Taking another months break, or maybe I should just unistall, this game isn't enjoyable for casuals at all. Hmm, mebe it will be better next year?
