Ap Varus mechanics/viability

Hello

I wanted to create a thread about the mechanics of AP Varus and its viability.

I'll start with a pro/con list:

Pros: Extremely high burst One of the best tank-killers in the game Unexpected, many people don't understand it AOE nuke and cc bundled in one

Cons: Low mobility (same as AD Varus) Takes a more skilled approach to deal damage Low poking ability

Looking at the pros and cons of AP Varus, what situation would you pick it? Well the reason AP Varus is a fantastic pick some games is when the enemy team has some mega tanks that are complete beasts to actually take down. I'm talking about your Dr. Mundo, Nasus, Zac, Garen, Volibear, and even high HP mages like Vlad and Swain. The reason AP Varus excels at demolishing targets with high HP is because his %HP based damage. His W places stacks on his target which can be detonated by his other abilities for %max HP on his target. Obviously, the higher health the target, the more damage this deals. Each basic attack on his target places a stack of blight on them. Blight can stack up to 3 times on each target. For each stack of blight on the target the damage they take when hit by one of varus's abilites increases. I will include the exact amounts below.

Varus' basic attacks deal bonus 10 / 14 / 18 / 22 / 26 (+0.25 per ability power) magic damage and apply Blight for 6 seconds (stacks 3 times). Varus' other abilities detonate Blight, dealing magic damage equal to 2 / 2.75 / 3.5 / 4.25 / 5% (+2% of ability power) of the target's maximum health per stack.

What this means is, for every 50 ability power you have, each stack of blight deals 1% more max hp damage to his target. So just some simple math here, at rank 5, with 600 ability power, one stack of blight deals 5 + 12 =17% max hp damage to his target. At 3 stacks thats 51% MAX HP damage dealt to his target! These are applied with his basic attacks so just three basic attacks on your target and one ability and you are dealing that much damage. Don't forget about your basic attacks as well. You get bonus magic damage from your W too which also scales pretty nicely with AP. With the same amount of AP as before (600) your basic attacks are dealing 26+150 = 176 bonus magic damage! Not too bad.

Now what about his ult? Well this is the other reason for picking AP varus. Here is the description:

Varus flings out a tendril of corruption that deals 100 / 175 / 250 (+100% of ability power) magic damage and immobilizes the first enemy champion hit for 2 seconds.

The corruption then spreads towards nearby uninfected enemy champions, applying the same damage and immobilize if it reaches them. The corruption will continue to spread until there are no further unaffected targets in range.

Targets rooted by Chain of Corruption gain 3 stacks of Blight over the duration of the root.

Yes, you read that correctly. It has 100%ap scaling. His ult also spreads to other targets as well as having a significant root on top of it. Again, with 600 AP, his ult is dealing 250+600 = 850 Damage, with a root, that also spreads to other targets! ON TOP OF ALL THAT, each target hit builds up 3 stacks of blight. Not only does his ult deal TONS OF DAMAGE, but it allows you to follow it up with even more.

What does this look like in practice? Lets just imagine for a moment that we get off a combo with 600 AP. We shoot our target with 3 aa, they take 528 magic damage plus 286.2 physical from his base damage. We then throw our R at them, they take 850 flat damage + 1,275 from blight (Assuming they have 2,500 HP). We then AA one more time for 176 +95.4 and use a Q or E and they take another 1,275 from blight and 205 from E (base damage). Altogether this is a total of 4,690.6 damage in ~3 seconds. NOW THAT is some damage. That amount of damage does not factor in damage from items, or other bonus AD. Also, the more HP the target has, the more damage our blight deals. **This also does not take armor/mr into consideration.**Yes, I did not forget about that. You can do the math on your own for whatever % damage reduction you want to apply. But just remember, that was just from ONE initial combo that does not include his FULL combo or any additional damage from masteries and items.

In conclusion? Depending on the team comp, AP varus is more than viable. Do I think he is the best in class AP mid laner? No. Am I claiming he beats all? No. I simply am trying to inform people on the mechanics and including some basic math on his abilities for the people who either don't understand and/or think AP Varus is not viable. He is deceptively good, and his blight stacks are detonated by his Q,E, and his R, so it doesnt matter that his Q and E don't scale with AP, they have the added damage of his blight stacks on W so they might as well. You will have a hard time finding a champion who can shred tanks better. In my opinion, AP varus has the highest potential to obliterate tanks than any other champion.

So when should you pick AP Varus? It's simple. If their team has several big tanks. Most champions will ignore the tanks and go after the carries. Not AP Varus. Your job is to absolutely demolish that confident tank running at your team. Just from my personal experience, There is no tank in this game that will be able to reach your backline and survive if AP Varus is focusing them. You absolutely have the ability to one shot any squishy as well, believe me. The amount of people I have left completely shocked at their computer because I one shot them when they were playing an ADC or assassin is countless. But any AP mid laner can deal with squishies, I believe AP Varus shines next to others when it comes to shredding those pesky tanks.

So go out and give him a try. He definitely takes practice, and has a high skill ceiling and floor. So don't give up because you don't do well right away. Varus is naturally a very vulnerable champion if you don't position carefully and are not familiar with his capabilities. For anyone interested in trying, here is the build I have found most effective item 3115 item 3100 item 3146 item 3089 item 3135 in that order. You can sub out gunblade for item 3116 depending on the situation, but I believe this set to be the best. It gives you full CDR if you have item 3158 which you will need for using abilities to detonate blight. The bonus damage you get from your AA from Nashors and Lich bane is also extremely nice and effective based on the nature of him being an ADC. The attack speed also is a good amount for getting those stacks up.

Enjoy playing AP Varus, don't underestimate him, and have a great day summoners!

what about hybrid varus? could it be possible? Varus item 3020 item 3146 item 3124 item 3042

It might work, but seems more gimmicky than the others, because each of his most popular builds in any given role rely pretty heavily on ability dmg, Q and E dmg with AD, and W stack dmg and R dmg with AP, as well as some ap scaling on-hit. Overall he's pretty reliant on buying items that give a decent few stats or give him more dmg scaling with those stats he prioritizes, and since a hybrid build doesn't really prioritize anything and tries to accomplish many at once, it might seem a little underwhelming. Wouldn't say it's useless, but I don't think it compares to more heavy AD or AP builds.

I've wanted to do Ap Varus for a while, this just makes me wanna do it more

Go for it. If you ever want to talk about it or have any questions let me know! AP Varus is my most played.

the thing that is interesting with his tankbusting is it's not really DPS it's more of a big burst of %health magic dmg. Though I think he's not ultimately the best ap tankmelter (thinking of Cassiopeia Azir ); his kit in AP is really healthy imo. He needs to be in range to AA and then fire the spell for high risk high reward. Tried it in one for all, it was definitely very nice, not quite underpowered (ratio-wise). Yet I don't think he's viable in high elo ranked games, as he's too low range and his Q arrows without blight stacks in AP, are worthless (yea there's the luden's proc but meh)

I'm not sure about the lichbane, find it kinda greedy since ultimately you want to AA first then launch a spell, would make your combo last even longer, i think luden's instead would do the trick, since it works on his Q and E.

Kovah1 votes

I like it more simply because of the 10%CDR. As far as the proc goes, for a typical engage I will actually just throw out a q immediately to get the lich proc right away, and it is already back up again by the time I detonate my stacks so I usually get two procs off in a fight. The CD for it is just so much faster than ludens.

But yes, the burst %health damage is huge, and it totally catches tanks off guard. I love getting three stacks on a tank then ulting them, watching their health instantly disappear. Its very demoralizing for them and for the rest of the team behind them.

I would only pick it if I can expect an easy farm lane. AP Varus ain't going nowhere without gold.

Kovah1 votes

Well, his damage output as AP is on par with anyone. You can straight up duke it out with almost anyone. The problem comes when you are lower hp than your enemy and they have decent poke. You just have to be confident in your abilities/damage and you should be fine.

Just played a game as AP Varus (inspired by you of course) And I'm pleasantly surprised. I start off with Dorans blade and AD runes and masteries (Since his arrow scales much better early game and lane phase) build a tear, transition to a large ap item and boom you are now set to shred some tanks and or squishies.

Awesome! I'm glad I could get someone else to try it. Yes, the early game is definitely easier with what you did there. Did you end up winning? Were you bot lane or mid?

I tend to go with attack speed marks and quints. Gives a solid 29% attack speed going into the game. This makes me not feel punished for having low AP early and since I'm maxing W first the damage adds up. With that much starting attack speed I almost always start with item 1083 . The attack speed really makes the 3 health per AA add up quick. The extra gold gain also slingshots you into your first/second item as well.

I was mid lane, and yes we wound up winning against a fed Jax and fed Zac and god my enemy mid laner was Vlad (whom I punished every chance he got to use his empowered heal with my own E) That game was very well fought and playing as AP Varus felt rewarding.

I don't own varus but when he's been on free rotation I've been trying this with dorans blade, roa, nashors, greaves, lichbane, and then rabadons/void staff/zhonyas. Also, I like maxing q before w or at least getting early points in it for lane poke. What's your opinion on that build?

Kovah1 votes

Build seems great man. Honestly it depends on your playstyle. Do you play passive or aggressive? I max W first pretty much every time because I use attack speed marks/quints so the flat damage added to your basic attacks from W makes it so that you can constantly harass with AA for some really consistent damage in the early laning phase. Also, maxing W first definitely helps with last hitting for the first few levels. Zhonyas is great on Varus because of his lack of defense/mobility and I do build it during some matchups.

Holy moly, you actually play AP varus.. At first I thought this is just a troll post, but now I'm enlightened. Even though AD varus outclasses AP, and one scimitar counters you, it seems interesting.

KING 5HARK1 votes

one scimitar counters you

How does scimitar counter him? Not to say anything about the strength of AP Varus, I just dont see it

Nick Da Chip1 votes

I would say AP Varus outputs more damage than AD varus, but AD is a lot more reliable and easier to use.

wouldn't buying item 3085 be a must considering you can apply blight to multiple people in teamfights

If you're focusing the frontline down, Runaans probably won't live up to its potential if the backline knows how to position.

Papa Slothy1 votes

o good point, thanks

Kovah1 votes

Yea. From my experience you want to really position yourself well in the back. You don't have good escape so its important not to get right in the middle of things, so you won't really get a good opportunity to use this. Plus your ult will throw three stacks on everyone if you get a good one off.

I've been playing AP Varus for over a year now. I've found that going RoA first has made my games with varus unmistakably better. The added tankiness it adds helps so much since AP varus normally dies too quickly if jumped on.

I think AP varus is definitely viable depending on the enemies team comp. He has the hardest time with assassins it seems.

These are just my observations though.

Kovah1 votes

Hmm. I've been thinking about it. Where would you add it in on the build I have listed?

Nick Da Chip1 votes

I always build catalyst first. I'm still debating if it's the best item for him though since the changes. Before that I think it was the best. It still offers him a good amount of tankiness that I think really benefits his play style.

You're build follows mine pretty closely. I've only bought gunblade once and thought it crippled my damage. I haven't tried gunblade out very often though so it may be better than I realize. Berserkers over the CDR boots is also more effective I would think, but maybe i'm downplaying the cdr he needs.

AP varus is a pretty fun champion that is rarely used so it's nice to see different people's builds on him.

Kovah1 votes

Honestly, its just a preference thing. I like the sustain. But I can see how having the larger health pool may be better. And the extra mana is nice.

Don Spaghetti1 votes

You should add "abysmal early game" to the cons.

But as far as your math on his damage goes, you forgot to add the base damage + ap ratio on his aa's he gets from having a nashor's. That's another +15 base and 15%ap magic damage. Brings his autos to an additional 41 + 240(40%) magic damage with 600 ap with his w passive.

Kovah1 votes

"That amount of damage does not factor in damage from items, or other bonus AD"

;D

Yea I thought about adding it because it certainly is a large chunk of damage but when you start including damage from other sources other than the kit people like to flame you about how if its an item everyone can do it, so I tend to stick to just his kit because then you can't dispute the damage.

And I dont think his early game is "abysmal". Its not the BEST but when maxing W first your AA's do a significant amount of poke damage, and it costs you no mana so you have some consistent high damage poke throughout the early game. It makes it more tolerable when fighting a zed or fizz or something. They can dive you sure but most of the time its with ~half hp so you have a chance to kill them.
