Definitely Unpopular Opinion: General Expectations for Large Scale Reworks are too Unrealistic
This is gonna be dirty.
For the most part, people expect way too much from these large scale reworks.
From where I look at these reworks (mostly Champions I didn't play and still don't), it seems there is far too much emotion surrounding it.
Now I try to be understanding for this, but when it comes down to it, these reworks are for champions that are not simply chosen on a whim; they are chosen for VERY SPECIFIC REASONS.
But then people jump up in arms when the kit has so much as 1 ability changed and it is not simply just a visual upgrade.
The bottom line of this is game balance and health; if the rework cannot put the champion in a position where they can be balanced (note that I say can be, not instantly will be), then, and only then, should the rework be considered a failure.
Because to me Riot has kept the essence of each champion's FANTASY. And this is the important thing. Not the champion's kit, but their FANTASY. You can go on and on about how Warwick giving attack speed to his allies was "cool and unique", but did losing it impact his fantasy at all? Hell his ultimate was changed to be a skillshot, and it arguably is MORE thematic.
Now balance is another volatile subject, and I would certainly not say Riot has made perfect decisions regarding it, but to me, EVERY one of these more recent large scale reworks (Yorick, Poppy, Galio, Urgot, Taric) have been a success. Riot did the best they could with what they had.
Expecting more than that to me frankly sounds selfish (before you lash out at me for it, you would seriously sit there and say the health of the ENTIRE game is less important than keeping a kit that had clear issues that changing numbers would not resolve?)
