Just curious, why do people HATE building Sight-Stone on Support?
What's the reasoning behind not building it?
What's the reasoning behind not building it?
Sightstone is built on support for 1 reason and 1 reason alone.
Because no one else wants to build it.
It isn't a support item. it is an item that supports are forced to buy because a team without sightstone is a team with an inherent disadvantage, thus it is an inherent burden. It is incredibly slot inefficient as well, and costs you an actually good item in exchange for the slot efficiency by buying an eye item.
Supports build it because they're the only ones whose damage isn't actually why they exist. ADC's and mages can't set their build back 800 gold and expect to get keep even in lane. The only reason it works in bot lane is because it's a 2v2 lane. The ADC is dishing out the damage, sometimes you clean it up (it totally wasn't stolen on purpose, right?).
Supports build it because they're the only ones whose damage isn't actually why they exist.
Depends on the support you have.
Supports like Brand and Zyra do tons of damage and their damage is part of what makes them good and effective because damage is never a bad thing to have.
ADC's and mages can't set their build back 800 gold and expect to get keep even in lane.
How is this not proving my point? Sightstone is a burden and it is put on the support out of overall team effectiveness for the rest of the team.
the importance of vision and thus the overall net efficiency in vision it provides makes it mandatory, but the item itself sux because that power in vision it provides is already huge. Making it stat efficient as well would make everyone buy it and then there would be too much vision.
Ultimately it comes down to it being simply a ubiquitous item no one wants to buy, so the support is made to have to shoulder it because it is less of a burden on them than on every other role.
it's no different than the reasoning why mages are midlane and ADC' are bot lane. it's all macro.
Its the most efficient item utility by far while being the least efficient combat wise by far. That alone screams support item.
technically tanks from top lane and jungle could buy it as well with that logic since tanks dont need damage they mostly just use their CC and Tanky stats
The laners have to get away from the CS to actually utilize the Sightstone better than the trinket ward. Later in the game, the laners risk being caught out if they roam too deep, hindering objective taking around the map until they respawn, meaning most wards they'd place would be shallow.
The support and jungler don't need to worry about minions (the jungle monsters won't kill themselves while you're gone), so that relieves them of the early game downsides. If a Support dies while getting a deep ward down, the teams damage output is usually intact, letting them still take objectives around the map.
We've seen Junglers take Sightstone in pro games, with Lee Sin and Rek'sai being the ones that come to mind right off (Olaf might as well). I think the reason for them taking it is because they want both the utility and the tanky stats, plus they have ways to get out if things start to look like they went too deep.

Plus they are pro-players who realize that the personal sacrifice of going
is small in comparison to the overall benefit of the team.
Junglers are indeed the second best role to buy SS, but top laners are not so suitable. If they are tanks they should be focused to reach their cost efficient items asap for midgame fights. Most of the times the team to lose frontline first is the one to lose.
Just because it is a suport item doesnt mean that it should only be build on suports.
Supports like Brand and Zyra do tons of damage and their damage is part of what makes them good and effective because damage is never a bad thing to have.
Those mages are picked support because they can dish out large amounts of damage while still building support, not because they scale well with items. Thus, building sight stone on them does not affect their damage as much as other mages.

I dont remember stating otherwise?
Sounds like you were arguing otherwise. Sorry, didn't really see the point you were really adding. How you worded your post your point made it sound as if other lanes other than support should be buying it, and that other lanes are acting selfish for forcing it on the support.

No I was saying that in meta and macro sense, not the literal sense.
Every other other role will not take the item so Support is stuck with it. Laners aren't being selfish. it's sightstones fault for being a shit item.
Then we see it the same way. I just read it wrong, then. Thanks.
How is it NOT considered a support item? Riot literally has the gold income items build into it which are intended for supports... I mean, the vision is so important, why would you want your carry to invest 800 gold on an item that doesnt give him more damage? The support role is more forgiving in that regard.
By that logic "sightstone" should be a jungler only item as they freely build it as part of their core item, while supports get more utility than red/blue smite out of talisman/face of the mountain/frost queens.
?????????
Provide more utility over their sightstone counterparts than
and
provide over
You stated that sighstone is a support item because it builds into core support items. Yet Junglers can also build their own version of sightstone and give up even less than the supports have to. Supports give up a powerful active that directly influences their ability to do their job. Junglers on the other hand give up only a small debuff that doesn't help them in the same way for a much cheaper version of sightstone.
Your logic behind why sightstone is a "support item" is invalid when confronted with the fact that Junglers build the equivalent of it much faster, cheaper, and while giving up much less. So how exactly is it a support item?
This is especially true when you consider that Junglers do more with the wards that are placed than Supports do, so what exactly is it that makes the sighstone line a support item and not a jungler one?
I think you are severely under rating how powerful Challenging Smite is, especially for dueling which Junglers tend to do quite a bit, especially when Counter Jungling.
The thing is that the utility that the support actives offer directly help them do their job, which is catching people out and protecting their carries.
Junglers don't get the same amount of role utility as supports do from their actives. Junglers exist to control objectives, which neither smite directly helps, and gank, which only chilling smite helps with and isn't as powerful as any of the support's actives.
I didn't say that jungle actives aren't powerful, because they are. The difference is that they don't help the junglers fulfill their role in the same way support actives do, which is what this argument is about. They argued that Sighstone is a "support" item because it combines with the items they build. The same can be said of Junglers however and they lose less in regards to fulfilling their role than supports do from picking it up.
Now because I didn't make it clear I want to mention that I DO think supports should pick up sightstone because they can clear out wards and put up vision so their jungler doesn't get spotted. They also have more time for it than the jungler. That being said I don't think it is a "support" item. It happens to be an item that fits best into the support role, but it isn't a true support item as it doesn't directly help them in the way that any actual support items do.
This logic cannot stand on its own.
Literally makes no since and has nothing to back it up in the slightest.

Those were added to make the burden of Sightstone less taxing on support item slots mere months ago. Wards in of themselves are not intristically linked to supporting, or at least Riot also outwardly claims.
Else trickets wouldnt exist. nor
.
It is merely burdened on the support because they are second class citizens Their build efficiency is less important than the others (statistically speaking) and thus they are the best person to force sightstone on because it woul delay other laners powerspikes and slot efficiency.
I mean, the vision is so important, why would you want your carry to invest 800 gold on an item that doesnt give him more damage? The support role is more forgiving in that regard.
This is exactly the point i am making tho.
Supports build sightstone because someone has to, and no one else wants the job.
At this point supports should take smite and build the vision jungle item and runic echos lol at least then it's better than am item with dismal stats, and theoretically a support with an offensive item first vs a support with sightstone first should technically always win but meh
As a support main the reason I don't like it is just like lol 800 gold for 150 health XD and wards that you gain naturally, if everyone warded when they had a ward it'd make the item obsolete but people never want to
700g for 2 wards or 800g for 3 wards and 150 hp? Hmmmmm... Also i think Eye of watchers beat Trackers runic echoes with sheer utility. Double the wards (or triple if we assume one is cleared), cdr, 200 hp , gold generation and a whole freakin summoner spell worth far more than the 35 ap, 7% movement (thats the biggest advandage actually) and 15 extra damage proc (eye has 3*15). Lets not forget that RE comes at 2625g that not only quite more expensive than the 2200 of eye, but also does not provide its burst until it is completed. Which is quite late at laning phase to matter. Also did i mention a whole freakin summoner spell?!
Also control wards are vanlurable and trinket cant cover good enouph(remember you need to stagger 2 of them for laning phase). SS is a burden we have to carry.
But gonna admit. If you want to be a complete a*@$$& to the enemy jungler and steal his camps, tracker is perfect for that.
Didnt say it was feasible lol and I wouldnt take jungle camps lol
but seems like riot wants to just remove sight stone so who knows maybe we wont have to carry the 'burden' much longer, just saying that there's other items that can do the job and provide equally as good bonuses, hell lol take both have eye and re with vision trinkets lol double smite for dragon and baron is op XD heck take the long ranged blue warding totem too and just start putting wards in every bush
If you want a game where ADC builds sightstone while your support builds damage, try it in ur team of 5s and let me know how it works pls im curious.

You aren't paying attention , r u? I never claimed that is what I want. I said that Sightstone is nothing but a burden Supports have to carry. It doesn't actually help me scale into protecting my team, it's just a paperweight I have to carry because it holds everyone else back more than it does me.
it's an item SOMEONE has to build, but no one wants to build, except maybe tank supports, but even they would prefer getting actual items instead.
i never thought of it like that omg your right...warding was never the supports just alone it simply became that because no other wanted to
There are reasons beyond that but I agree that Sightstone isn't a "support" item in the sense that it doesn't directly help the support fulfill their role.
Losing a slot also doesn't hurt supports as much since its likely that the game will be over before they even hit 6 items.
Sightstone is built on support for 1 reason and 1 reason alone.

This.
I mean I understand why supports are the best position to buy sightstones since utility is usually important above raw damage in that role. But let's face it, vision is a thankless job. It's critical and a team with better vision has a statistically better path to victory. But what the the user interface remind you periodically? You all know how it goes
Bob has a double kill Bob has a TRIPLE kill Bob has a QUADRA KILL!!! PENTAKILL!!!
And then you get the "Congrats Bob you are raping!" from the teammates.
Do supports get double wards, TRIPLE WARDS!!! PENTAWARDS!!! Nope so nobody notices it during gameplay. Do you ever hear "Hey thanks bob for putting that ward on a gank path. I saw the enemy jungler coming in an was able to pull back"? No. So again, warding is a thankless job that costs a good amount of gold.
Now I will continue warding because that helps the team out, but I can see why some supports are a little salty about it.
[{quoted}](name=Mountain Warden,realm=NA,application-id=3ErqAdtq,discussion-id=lXUTAyfe,comment-id=0015,timestamp=2016-11-25T05:38:11.917+0000) Do supports get double wards, TRIPLE WARDS!!! PENTAWARDS!!!
Not gonna lie to you, I would sign a petition to get that in the game just because of how hilariously ridiculous it would be.
sight stone cost too much and delays builds i would rather start building my main items first then buy it later on in the game. Buying sight stone is stupid when your lane is behind because trying to ward with no lane pressure is suicide. If the enemy jungler cant gank pre lvl 6 sight stone is optional in my book. thats all i have to say. These are the reasons many supports dont like to buy sight stone.
SS is the most gold efficient item utility wise. Even when you are pushed, defensive wards can make or break a dive. Buying it second after gold item upgrade is fine but its becoming more and more a nessesity the closer you are to mid game.
in one sense i guess it is semi gold efficient but the utility it provides is vision not a heal or shield so the utility is only tied how good you can be at watching the map while not getting poked to death by either the enemy adc or support (or both in some cases). Now against ganks while behind it could work but its kinda debate-able in early game if a jungler ganks us we either cant afford to leave the tower or its gone so we have to stall we would be able to stall out the fight if we had a better combat item so i could probs get me out of
or even another item giving me more defense.Late game i agree it is needed but only because riot limited vision so much and no one ever wants to use their trinkets
What? Vision is invaluable. 800g is nothing compared to the kills and denials of death there gonna be due to vision. You need 2 assisted kill/1death denied due to SS to break even. Even by raw numbers 30 wards placed is the equal of 1500g. Stop calling sem efficient and use superduperwow efficient instead.
how about reduced cost for supports if they buy sightstone
i just wish it costed less and that it either gave health regen so i could buy it while behind so i could withstand poke or let it regen wards so i didnt have to back too many times late and early game or carry more wards since there is already a limit
I think it would be a lot better with more for it to build into, or scale somehow like Rod Of Ages does.
[{quoted}](name=Skeptic Hare,realm=NA,application-id=3ErqAdtq,discussion-id=lXUTAyfe,comment-id=0021,timestamp=2016-11-25T11:03:04.905+0000)

Yes please. Perhaps make it's stats grow depending on how many Wards in total you plonk down?
then people would just plop 4 wards in base every recall
Not sure that'd work well.
I could see it's stats grow for every 2000+ item completed though. So every time the support finishes an item, it's stats would grow a bit. Maybe even add a unique active when once 3-4 items are completed (mainly for once you get fullbuild) where using sighstone on yourself makes your next ward a Control ward (with a cooldown of course, or only once per back).
Support players hate buying sightstone for one reason really, every other role gets to build based on the game alot of the time but support is stuck in the same old build every game and are forced to build this item every single game no matter what.
Really gets old doing the same thing over and over again.
If a midlaner only uses their trinket three times in a match, nobody bats an eye.
A support wards twenty times with their trinket but doesn't buy sightstone? Reported.
I personally hate sighstone because there's no strategic choice with it. You buy it because you have to. Tracker's Knife's existence shows that there could be itemization for potentially every class, and a set of sacrifice/rewards for itemizing so, but right now the burden is fully on the support.
I don't think vision should be the staple of the support role, and it causes people to not want to play support as much. The support role needs to focus on supporting, as in heals and shields and all that, and vision should be supplementary as well as equal with the other roles. The ADC should have scouting options (blue trinket, and mechanics like Kalista's ghosts or FQC's active should be potential itemization options?) and so on. Vision needs to be expanded upon, trinkets nerfed appropriately to avoid vision saturation, and equally distributed between the roles.
Sightstone, as it stands, represents that idea that warding is the support's job. If every class had their warding items and were equally expected to ward, without oversaturating the game with vision, and possibly more sightstone options (not just the fully upgraded ones, but like mana sightstone and such), then a lot of us probably wouldn't care nearly as much.
20 wards in 40 mins if you use your off CD and as soon as u spawn.. pretty bad. lol
Of all things I said, that's what got your attention.
Alas, here I thought this was going to be an actual discussion.
Cause if you don't think support should buy a sight-stone the discussion is over. We will never see eye to eye and it will just be an argument that i don't want to have.
You're not even listening to what that person was saying. This comment here you just posted is literally you saying "Buy it because you have to, the end." which is exactly the mindset they were arguing against.
The people who don't build sightstone on supports are the ones that didn't want to support but got autofill. So, they're going to take their Draven support anyway and just generally not support.
