I'm gold 4, got in a game with a bronze 3 on my team and a plat 4 on the enemy team...How is this at all fair?

Mostly because your rank means less then nothing it is more a case of MMR, that person is also likely a smurf with a 9/1 record as things go, and you won that game, and that bronze person was your MVP of the match according to op.gg.
Not only complete garbo but also insanely long queue times 5+ mins in SILVER , also full of smurfs CRAP Ragers, inters and flamers, and the icing the cake is that even if you are on a Big win streak(70%+ winrate) you Will get handicapped team mates just yo make you loose in a Stream.
Toxicity is NOW on chernobill aids level and people realize It and quitting in masses.

Riot is using 2 systems.
- MMR. This is the Value used by MM to build games.
- Progression. This is the system that uses LP and assigns Ranks.
Do not expect either to be accurate for accounts sitting at under 50 games. Riots progression system is entirely designed to target human behavior. Its a perception system.
