A lot of the league community seems to think that all top laners want to do is to play juggs and be able to 1v4 just because they got one kill and good farm. No, top laners just want to have equal impact to an adc if they come out of lane with similar gold levels.

a lot of top laners have equal impact, just not in damage and kills. Lots of top laners can sneak a turret or two or survive the response when it comes. Lots of top laners put pressure on squishes in team fights and eat up damage and cc for the rest of the team. lots of top laners FEED A JAYCE BECAUSE THEY WANTED TO GO ANIVIA TOP WITHOUT BEING GOOD AT ANIVIA OR GOOD AGAINST JAYCE! ok maybe that last one was just a problem I've had...
jokes aside, top lane is still important even if they don't do 70k damage per game. Their roles are a sort of jack of all trades more often than not so they don't have the flashy damage and kills of the adc or the survival of a full on tank (I know tanks can go top, but peeps general raise issue with fighters/juggernauts right?), they don't bring the heals/shields of a full blown support so people don't think they do much of anything.
Income comes down to most adcs being good farmers, and having 2-3(jungle) people to kill in lane, and a bud to help em at all times. adc items tend to be better since they only have to give damage instead of balancing tanky stats and raw unadulterated power.
