As a longtime Xerath Main, it's really dissapointing to see Zoe's kit in action.

k wìx··69 votes·5,689 views

Heya. It's really disappointing to see the vast majority of his kit almost completely outshined by Zoe's Paddlestar damage. There is very little reason to pick him with her on the table. Especially in the higher elos where players will capitalize on someone with so little mobility. Zoe at least has some tricks to try to juke/save herself.

A Fed Xerath will maybe snag a full kill with a Stun combo, which he arguably needs to be relatively close to land (his stun is fairly short ranged!) His ultimate is decent at best, it starts falling off once players learn to juke - it can be a great positional tool in teamfights (force enemy to turn back or take damage!)

Zoe on the other hand... It only takes 1 game playing as her to realize Paddlestars damage is just absolutely insane. If she gets fed, she basically can delete squishy targets with a single use of her stun into paddlestar.

I like the thematic of the ability, and I think her stun is neat, but they combine to turn her into one of the strongest AP Artillery assassins in the game. I can't think of a single advantage Xerath has other than... maybe a slightly easier laning phase? outside of mana issues, which Zoe doesn't seem to have.

Not that I'm really asking for Xerath buffs or even Zoe's nerfs.. but as a player who has put a TON of time into Xerath, it feels upsetting to see her be able to emulate his entire kit with a single 2 abilities, and then do so much more on top of that.

Are we comparing somebody with semi-global ultimate status and entire lane poking capabilities to somebody who doesn't have semi-global ultimate status and with poke that doesn't go beyond minion waves?

Yes actually, Zoe's ability to safely burst enemies isn't compounded with nearly the same degree of dependencies or tradeoffs that Xerath's is.

Xerath brings comparatively little to the table next to Zoe's mobility, burst, safety, and CC. She has too many tools and can accomplish everything Xerath can and more. And I don't even like Xerath.

People seem to say mobility like they think that Zoe has mobility in her kit, can you explain to me what in her kit constitutes as a mobility skill? Are you talking about the ultimate that makes you sit in one place, then force you to go back into that same space after 1 second?

Maybe i can elaborate a bit?

It's her ultimate. While it doesn't directly allow her to escape a scenario, it provides her tons of initiate style plays from the backline with complete safety. It also allows her a nice little 'toolkit' of tricks that can allow her to juke skillshots and make some really cool skill plays. You can already find TONS of videos of players using her ultimate to escape or juke tricky situations.

You can't honestly tell me her ultimate doesn't enhance her mobility or range.

While Xerath's kit allows him the reach, he sacrifices movement speed to get that, and even then - his stun is short ranged comparitively, and the damage from his poke is absolutely nothing compared to what Zoe can do if she gets a bit fed. One skill shot and its gg. As a fed Xerath, it's at least 3-5.

Give me a few weeks to learn her, and I just feel like there will be no reason to play Xerath, other than she'll be banned most of the time. That thought depressed me a bit, so I wanted to post about it.

Her ult does not provide her 'safety' you can still attack her during her ultimate for 1 seconds as she will be within 800 range.

Xerath on the other hand can COMPLETELY safely poke from the back line as his Q and ult have absurdly long ranges? So what are you crying about exactly?

If she has no mobility to begin with then there is nothing to enhance, your argument is invalidated by your own words.

Xerath has better wave clear and his E lasts just as long, travels a long distance, and doesn't stop based on taking champion damage. He has a global, she doesn't, there are very clear advantages that he has - It's just that he's so mind numbingly simple and unoriginal that people instantly know how to get passed him.

While Xerath is still performing at higher levels compared to her, keep in mind.

On a second note though: What do you think he ultimate is for again? Do you not think it's used to enhance her range? Is that REALLY the argument you want to make here lmfao?

You have to factor in the ability to pick up summoners spells, which as you play her, you realize arent as rare as you'd think. Ive player her only a handful of times, and multiflash ghost plays happen easily.

Also you have to figure in that item 3100 item 3285 are both optimal on her.

She is by no means lacking in the mobility department, and when compared to xerath, its no contest.

1.) I don't really think you have any idea about my skill as a player nor do you know if I'm a good Xerath player. But who cares? That wasn't the point of my post.. it was about how I felt. Skill be damned.

2.) Zoe is basically on perma-banned status. Xerath is not. Trust me. If Xerath was as good as your trying to make him out to be, his banrate would reflect that. In high level play, he is not competitive. He's too easy to counter pick. Please find me a challenger who says otherwise.

3.) My initial post was less about nerfs for anyone - it was just about how depressing it is for me to see Zoe essentially outperform Xerath in pretty much every metric. I feel that she does, and it bothers me - wanted to post about it. I don't really care about nerfs one way or the other.

  1. How you feel is utterly irrelevant? Xerath is a top 3 mid laner currently in pre season. All evidence points to this and you're crying about him being bad. I can deduce quite a lot about your skill level actually considering how utterly clueless you are about the current state of the game.

  2. Every new champion release has been perma banned for the first few weeks so whats your point exactly? Xerath is sitting at a 53%winrate and Zoe is sitting at a 45% winrate. Statistics dont lie, your significantly more likely to lose in a game against a Xerath than you are against a Zoe.

  3. Except Zoe objectively does not out perform Xerath in every way? You're making that up. Xerath currently has a higher winrate Xerath out ranges Zoe Xerath has stun which is a superior form of CC to her sleep Xerath's Q, W and R go through minions, none of Zoe's spell do. Xerath's Q is actually easier to land and less telegraph Xerath has a slow, Zoe does not. Xerath has a semi global ultimate, Zoe does not.

Simply because Zoe does more damage with her Q does not make her superior in every way. You might wanna get informed and know what you're talking before coming to the forum and straight up lying making shit up.

No way this guy compared two entirely different champs and got upvotes. These boards are rediculous. Xerath is meta right now even and peoppe actually agree with this, unbelievable.

Zoes Q has many conditions to be met before it can actually hit or even one shot someone. Including landing two abilities (that can be blocked by ANY nonfriendly unit in the game), basically rooting yourself to the ground to get close enough to land it, and having to wait for the paddlestar to reach its destination instead of being near instantaneous.

Tell me, when does xerath have to worry about any of that aside from his stun which isn't even a main damage tool of his?

ÈvilMorty9 votes

I feel the same way when I play Anivia Veigar Brand where landing a full combo is out shined by her Q alone

Z3Sleeper1 votes

Doing more damage than a full combo from any of those is an overstatement. It's a 165% AP ratio max range, all those champs listed deal way more than 165% in their combos.

Damage split up into multiple chunks is more harshly mitigated by damage reduction stats than one ability alone.

How? Armor and MR reduce a percentage of damage, not a flat amount.

I'm not a fan of Zoe's design, and I think there are some serious issues with bringing back nuclear spearheads. That said, Xerath has a ton of aoe whereas Zoe is single target. There's a higher chance of Zoe putting Nidalee out of a job than putting Xerath out of one.

NakedGranny3 votes

Did you forget about Zoe borrowing spare summoner spells and having a powerful hard-CC with essentially unlimited duration?

I mean... have you LOOKED at the duration of her sleep compared to Morgana's Root? Morg's Q lasts only a single second less... and can't be placed as a trap, doesn't refund its own cooldown and doesn't give allies a massive True damage boost when they hit the victim

Mogarl4 votes

Tbf "I'm not a fan of Zoe's design, and I think there are some serious issues with bringing back nuclear spearheads." doesn't mean I only think the spear is a problem, but this thread is about Zoe as a siege mage in comparison to Xerath as a siege mage. Zoe can only hit one person per cast with her two standard offensive spells and her passive. Xerath can hit multiple people with two of his standard offensive spells and his ultimate. His E can only hit one person, and that's the only damaging thing in his kit that is like that.

Zoe is pretty disgusting on paper (and probably in game as well though she's been pretty perma banned), but saying she is 100% a better artillery mage than Xerath is a silly claim.

NakedGranny3 votes

Claiming that you need to do area damage to be a good mage is a silly claim.

There's really only one target on the enemy team that anyone should be killing right now: the adc. No one else even fucking matters in this current meta. Zoe is safer and just better than Xerath, full stop.

She's arguably better than Lux in many situations, but not all, and that's only because of Lux's 20s cooldown ult.

I won't even legitimize Morgana by making a comparison except to say that if Morg were deleted two years ago, no one would have noticed except me because I played Morg for five years.

Zoe is also better than LeBlanc by a HUGE margin. They shat down LB's throat with that passive, and here comes Zoe with her passive... and it's literally an order of magnitude more powerful.

Then we compare Zoe to Ziggs... Look at the damage on Zigg's Q and then compare it to the scaling on Paddleball. If you don't vomit immediately, you need to see a doctor.

This.... this is just getting out of hand. No wonder the playerbase has been dwindling so dramatically lately.

Mogarl3 votes

Xerath can kill the Marksman through the frontline. Zoe can't.

Lux can kill the Marksman through the frontline. Zoe can't.

Morgana is not an artillery mage. You're just glueing her in here because she's your prefered champ and you dislike Zoe. Although your comparison still falls flat since Zoe can't perma CC you after landing a single bubble. Morgana can ult you after a Q and many champions can't get away even with flash because of the large tether range and slow.

Leblanc has an entire near point and click rotation that could 100 - 0 someone which led to her being dumpstered (she's still a pain to deal with though). Zoe is all skillshots that are encouraged to be from long distances.

Ziggs has a fuck ton of zoning in his kit, decent safety, and (you guessed it) AOE.

Zoe is pretty disgusting on paper (and probably in game as well though she's been pretty perma banned), but saying she is 100% the best mage is a silly claim.

Zoe and Xerath are very different champions. She's designed to be a burst mage while he's an artillery mage.

As someone whose actually played Xerath into a Zoe match up, there really is no contest. Xerath beats her in wave clear, range, and consistent damage output that doesn't rely on 2 other abilities (Zoe's bubble and Ult) in order to function. She has a hard time beating people who out range her, due to them being able to see and move out of the way of Zoe's Jump and Bubble combo.

It honestly sounds like you just got outplayed by a Zoe. Not saying she isn't a tad strong atm, but you're comparing apples and oranges here.

There IS a reason to pick Xerath! As a support (see korea)!

Because shoving outdated mages to support roles instead of buffing them for midlane is wonderful.

Xerath has an easier laning phase, and more AoE dmg. Zoe is more assassin-esque and focused on getting picks.

I think the best way to put it is that Xerath is artillery and Zoe is a sniper.

This generally is never the case for me, even if I am ahead of the curve. Landing all 3 shots will at most result in about 75% of the adc's health. (Which is extremely difficult to do at the best of times!) But I do agree that Xerath is an artillery mage, and that poking people from a distance is his jam.

never said its easy thing to do, its just that's what he has over zoe........ that and that his skill shots do not get interrupted by others other than his stun, meaning, you can't body block zerath's damage, while you can do that with zoe's.

but, that's about it zoe's kit is both superior (with her W giving her a lot of hidden power) and over powered right now. As long as she either hits her E or a target gets hit by a snare/stun/suppress, she can one shot them.
