Post the single best piece of advice you can give to players new to league. #helpthenewbies

I'll post 3 to get us started, but post the best single piece of advice you can to help players new to the game!

  1. Each time you die, go back and examine what happened in your mind, and find out where things went wrong. Lack of vision caused you to think there was only 1 opponent, maybe you overestimated your damage potential, or underestimated your own. Maybe you depended on a teammate to do something and they did not do it, maybe you simply got caught and got chain-cc'd into oblivion. All of these things are common, and they happen to every player. The trick is figuring out how to avoid all of them.
  2. Always hold tab to check out the opponents items, kills/death ratio, and CS scores. The goal here is to figure out who is doing well and who is doing poorly. You always want to be very aware of who is 'fed' and who is not. Enemy players who score a lot of kills become very powerful and you'll want to avoid them or be very afraid of engaging them. Some characters in league can straight up win games if they get really fed early in the game. Katarina is a prime example. In an experts hands, going 8/2 or 9/0 ... She is pretty much unstoppable by the mid game.
  3. Vision is probably the most important skill to master in the game. Like, its absolutely critical to have as much vision as possible at all times. No matter what your role is, If you are not buying wards, you are simply doing a disservice to your team. A very new player friendly way to take care of your vision game is to buy a item 3362 . This is cheap, so it won't impact your build much and the purple wards not only last a much longer time than the basic wards, but it ensures that no enemy has vision in that specific area. This is no substitute for good, proper warding - but it's much better than simply ignoring vision, and its practically free.

The #1 rule in LoL if you want to be successful: Don't rage and be toxic.

When you do that, you and your teams play ability goes way downhill. I've seen it hundreds of times.

Your biggest enemy is not Teemo. It's not the fed Yi and it's not Karthus' Ult. Your biggest enemy is YOUR EGO. Save your ego for reddit and have a completely ego-free mindset when entering games and you WILL see a marked improvement.

  1. Ward - vision is OP, wins games.
  2. Learn to CS - I forget the rate, but I think it's close to 10 cs = a kill (please correct me if I'm wrong)
  3. Objectives > Kills (you may have to kill some one to get a tower or drag)
  4. Learn to play every role - to learn how the flow of the game is for all lanes and helps when you get stuck in that lane
  5. Did I mention ward?

Understand the meta. No I mean understand the meta. A lot of problems occur because a lot of people only think they know what the meta is and insist on following it.

Tip: if you still think that you have to follow the meta, or that the meta is complex and constantly changing, then you haven't undertstood the meta yet. It has nothing to do with what certain player groups are favouring at the moment.

Pros actually break the meta constantly because if both team were to follow the meta exactly neither would have an advantage. So you not only need to know the meta, you also need to understand the reasons for why it is the way it is so that you know when to follow it and when to break it.

Metagaming means looking at the rules and setup and determining the best approach to a game. On Summoners Rfit these are things like:

  • mid has a short recall, and gets the most XP. So should have a level scaling champ
  • duo lanes get less XP but more gold. So should have item scaling champs
  • top is often alone for some time. So should have savety and sustain.

The meta tells you that taking a Tank top is probably best, but when you know that the enemy is probably gonna bring a Tank, you can also break the meta an take a Tank Buster top.

(1) Pick a champion you find fun and play that champion as often as possible. Don't worry about whether people consider that champion any good.

(2) Every time you lose a team fight identify one thing you could have done better. Every time you win a team fight think about one thing you could have done better.

(3) Never ever pay attention to your rank.

The Bearded Bard3/19/2015, 4:11:19 PM6 votes

Upgrade your yellow trinket as soon as you can. That shit's two free wards that refresh as they expire for only 250 gold.

Priority order should be Nexus>Inhibs>Baron>Inhib Tower>Dragon>Outer tower> Kills. Don't ever chase a kill when you could be doing one of those things instead.

Try not to get baron or dragon unless you know for a fact the enemy jungler has no way of getting to it in time.

If someone is being defensive then suddenly switches to offensive, you're about to get ganked and you should run instead of attempting to fight. If someone is pushing aggressively then suddenly starts last hitting, there's an enemy nearby and you're about to get ganked. Chill under tower until an ally can help you or you think the threat has gone away.

During the laning phase, if you lose vision on your opponent for more than 3 seconds, call "Missing enemy" ping 2 times to make sure you team is aware. If your opponent is an Assassin (Katarina, Akali, Zed, Talon, etc...), take 3 seconds of your time to suggest your team mates to back off a little bit. Trust me on that one, this is very important.

It can be worth it to take 10-20 mins to watch guides for champions/roles that you want to play. There is alot to know in league so guides help alot.

Also pay attention to your minimap, you can save yourself and teammates just by being aware of what the enemy team is doing.

Celeste Benal3/19/2015, 9:41:08 PM5 votes

Ward all the things. You can never have too many wards out. Literally.

IcyPepper3/19/2015, 10:48:35 PM5 votes

CS is more important that kills.

Dying just to get a kill is almost never worth it. Unless it's Teemo, then it's always worth it.

Don't chase people forever. If an opponent gets away from you and you have no way to close in for the kill within 5-6 seconds, or if theyre running into their own jungle and you have no vision, just turn back and farm your lane minions. Kills aren't as valuable as people think when theyre new, and denying the enemy laner farm by shoving lane to tower when you push them out of lane is huge.

  1. Hit Tab, look at the speech bubble on the right by each player. If someone is giving you a hard time, click that button, muted. It is your best friend.

  2. If you want to play this game seriously, look up meta videos and tier lists, Jeremy Curios is one youtuber I suggest as a good channel to learn a few things about the meta and tier lists.

  3. Do not let the meta control you! You don't have to pick the fotm champ every game, learn your champs, learn who is strong, learn who is strong against meta picks. You'll quickly find out that the meta is much bigger than people think.

  4. Relax. You won't win every game. You don't have to win every game. When you queue up, play music, chat with a friend, put a relaxing tv show on. Learn to have fun and poke at yourself any time you make a mistake. There is no sense in getting upset over a game.

  5. Always look at any death and lose as a learning experience. It may be true that the game was unwinnable, but that doesn't mean you couldn't have done things differently and perhaps done better in that game.

  6. Learn locking and unlocking and quick casting. Play your champ, learn what skills are good for quick cast. Learn when to lock your camera and when to unlock your camera.

The biggest tip I have is this. Have fun! If you find the game is becoming stressful or is upsetting you. Walk away. Go out side, call a friend, watch a movie, do something else! This is a game, it's meant to be fun. It is not worth messing yourself up over just to win. Learn to have fun, break the meta, laugh at your mistakes, challenge yourself, but don't let is stress you. It's just not worth it.

BakedLotion3/19/2015, 10:17:08 PM4 votes

Don't use smite on champions. As much as I've wanted to summoner 11 Teemo, it doesn't work. I've tried.

Well, unless you have machete upgrade.

tkmteam51583/19/2015, 5:17:53 PM4 votes

~ Focus alot of your play time on map awareness until your checking it naturally. Having an idea off where your opponents are can great a very good advantage in your favor.

~ WARD! You need to be on top of that stuff! i don't mean place wards in the closest bush. You should watch advanced/Pro players and learn the best places to ward, both in your own jungle (Yes it really does help), and the other teams.

~ Learn your builds. I haven't seen this one below. Its important to learn how to build against your opposing team. Just because your build doesn't call for item 3102 , doesn't mean it won't help. No one build works at all times.

~ LEARN ALL THE ROLES! Come on guys, "I can play mid or top only" doesn't work for me.. Your last pick. Enjoy free week Leona.

Don't be afraid of dying. I know this sounds weird but hear me out on it. Note that I play the tank that will walk up to a tower with my adc and take several hits(4+) so that the adc can kill the tower without minions, but that's only when there are three or more enemies dead and we need the objective(usually an inhibitor turret followed immediately by an inhib). Think about the situation you're in, sometimes dying is the right thing to do. If you are playing tanks like amumu or zac, you will be initiating team fights and being the first member of your team focused to death, but hopefully your team follows your engage and you trade your life for three or more enemies lives.

DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE NO MATTER HOW TEMPTING IT LOOKS CHASE SINGED

Castman3/20/2015, 12:16:25 AM3 votes

Don't just pick a main and focus on playing that champion ONLY. Do yourself a favor and play ALL the champions (or at many as you can) at LEAST 2-3 times. That way you have a grasp of their capabilities and what you are facing

junglerboy163/19/2015, 5:21:37 PM3 votes

Learn how to build your champion in game. Check out guides, watch VODs, anything really, but learn how to use different items in different situations, and what general item types are best on certain champions (i.e. don't build full tank on Leblanc, don't build AP on Riven, don't try to save up for Trinity force when supporting). Above all though, make sure that whenever you build an item you think to yourself "why am I buying this?" If your answer is "because I saw a pro build it" or " because it is on my list of items to build" you should stop for a second and analyze the game. Who is fed on your team? Who is fed on the enemy team? Are you dying a lot? Are you getting kited? Do you need to kite more? etc. Once you have determined those things, look back at your item choices and find the one that fits the specific match you are in, not just the one that fits your "pro build".

P.S. If you are really new, learn how item recipes work ASAP, it'll save a lot of confusion and helps you win more and enjoy the game much better.

WARDS ARE FRIENDS NOT FOOD... but seriously ward

Ayame Isaki3/19/2015, 5:25:57 PM3 votes

If you are behind in CS or kills, it does not make you irrelevant. Ward, watch the map, pressure objectives, and most importantly stick with your team! If you are behind you are probably a free kill if you get caught out alone.

Be Forum Read, not Forum Bred.

Meaning... open your mind to the advice, lessons and information available on forums and fan sites to improve your understanding of the game. (Forum Read)

But don't use that as an excuse to replace actually learning what is going on by merely mimicking things. (Forum Bred)

I really feel this needs a sticky and be open to post more tips. Riot? Can you do that for us?

KenjiChan2513/23/2015, 3:45:03 AM2 votes

Map awareness. Learn to watch the minimap like you do a car's side mirror, and try to gauge an enemy's position at all times. As a corollary, learn also to guesstimate movement patterns based on what direction they're going before they disappear off the map.

And as everyone has said it already, but still can't be emphasized enough: Ward. It's not very sexy or complex, but knowing and not knowing where your enemy is pretty much makes up at least 60% of League gameplay. You have a warding trinket - use it.

The Bearded Bard3/19/2015, 4:12:48 PM2 votes

Sometimes your job isn't to attack the enemy team's carries. Even if you can kill them or keep them out of a fight, what good is that if the enemy team does the same thing to yours? You have to peel for your carries.

Damorion2153/19/2015, 9:50:16 PM2 votes

Just play with friends who know what they're doing. And I mean, not friends you make on LoL. I mean your irl (in real life) friends. Honestly, there's not a whole lot of people you can trust on LoL. Because the moment you think your team is going to help you, they won't. Trust me, I've played for about 3 years now and have been through hell. Ranked doesn't help either.

DrathTurtle3143/19/2015, 10:15:27 PM2 votes

I know its been said before, but use wards. there is never a time to not have 3 stealth wards and 1 vision ward on the map. per team member

On a related anecdotal note, I've had situations where I warded my own nexus. (vision ward vs an Evelynn)

ActuallyArrow3/19/2015, 10:24:30 PM2 votes

Don't be afraid to try new champions. Playing one champ that feels natural to you may be fun, but learning multiple champions opens up more doors.

l ArcticWolf l3/21/2015, 1:42:26 AM2 votes

The mute button is a blessing, when players show themselves as being toxic to he new players just mute them so you can keep having fun in the game. We all have bad games, but it's a terrible feeling when other's point out your mistakes. Learn from what went wrong, but most of all HAVE FUN!~~

The Whamboozler3/19/2015, 4:03:52 PM2 votes

The game is about getting the enemy towers and nexus, not getting kills.
