Discussion about AP Varus

I would like to start a discussion mainly about the viability of AP Varus. Now I won't say too much in the initial post other than I think it is just as viable as AD varus. The upside is you have more burst, and you fair better against tanky opponents. The downside is that it takes a little more time to set up and your teammates will yell at you for no reason.

Edit : So first game today ap varus 13/6/12 against nid mid. Ended with 2nd most damage. I got to the point where I could EASILY instakill the fed enemy Vayne in a 1v1, and my teamfight AOE from ult was outstanding. I was having a little trouble with dives however due to not having any real tanks. Will try to provide my experiences here.

I play him. I like him you can go top lane because less chance of being dived on as opposed to mid nashors is a first item must buy no questions asked as far as boots are concerned take your pick between sorc shoes which I wouldn't do beserker greaves or cool down boots. Then you need another attack speed item either runaans or wits end . lich bane is a good item to have moronomicon for more ap and CD . deathcap in there somewhere . but people don't understand it I mean minions virtually can't push your like vayne but way more powerful

I almost always build cdr boots and nashors first, getting to the 40% cdr point is CRUCIAL on ap varus as all of your damage stems from w procs. from there you build straight ap. Ludens has become my go to 2nd item

Long time AP Varus fan here. First question: we're talking about real AP Varus, not attack speed Nashor's+Runaan's Varus, right?

I think he is pretty viable right now, even more so with the AP itemization changes. The AS nerf on Nashor's hurts a little, but the AP gain along with several other item changes actually work excellently with his kit. Luden's combined with Lich bane and MS runes now offers enough MS to forego boots entirely (big Plus), and Luden's in general made him a lot better than he was before since it allows him to still be a pretty decent poke threat without building AD. My personal build (in no particular order) is item 3285 item 3115 item 3100 item 3089 item 3135 item 3174

He isn't as great as he was a couple months ago at the peak of tank meta where he potent disengage and huge % health damage made him lethal to tanks, but he is still useful. I think the more poke oriented AD caster Varus is probably a little stronger right now, but AP Varus is still a strong and worthwhile option that often catches your opponents off guard, both in terms of being a rare pick and also being deceptively strong (AA>AA>AA "Huh, he does so little damage..." R. "OH GOSH HE JUST TOOK ME FROM 80% TO DEAD IN ONE ABILITY!!!")

Yes I run basically the same thing, replace athene with CDR boots though, and lich with hourglass, you really need the hourglass active as varus as you have no defensive/mobility steroids. Oh and with nashors and passive W you get 300+ damage per AA of just AP, so his AA chunk nicely.

Lich bane is core to his burst though, and fits his play style perfectly (AA>AA>Spell>AA>AA>Spell>AA gives you two Lich bane procs, and yes I know it's only 2 AAs, but rarely does AP Varus have the time to plunk out three AAs between procs, especially considering that it only takes 4-5 stacks to kill them anyway). Zhonya's is overrated in my opinion, especially now that it gives 20 less AP (basically, unless you need it to avoid a lethal Nidalee spear or an Ashe ult from down town, the better option is usually to be able to out-burst your opponent and rely on your in built disengage for safety). The reason I take Lich bane+Luden's together without boots is that it provides a huge amount of mobility on its own (400 MS with Luden's, Lich bane, MS quints, and MS mastery, not to mention dragon buff's MS if you can get it). Playing without Zhonya's is a bit risky, yes, but playing AP Varus is risky in and of itself since he has to get in and AA for his damage instead of being able to sit back and poke for days. Really it comes down to personal preference, because when I play AP Varus, I go balls-to-the-wall glass cannon and blow people up, but it definitely works the way you build him too, that's just not to my liking.

When I said His AAs don't hurt much, I meant they don't do as much as people suspect, especially if they have much armor and MR. They chunk for a fair amount vs squishies, but the real kicker is that even though they really only tickle tanks, his W proc makes tanks cry.
