I would like to ask High Elo players how and why Yasuo isn't a problem in their elo.

I'm not your usual "OMG, PLEZ RITO, NURF YASUO NAO!!!!!!111!!1!" pleb. in fact, I have always regarded Yas as a high skill champ, and those who play him well should get the credit they deserve (cause, I sure as hell can't play him even decently).

However, I have been running into situations where a Yasuo just ends up going 1v9, and winning the game entirely on their own, with the rest of their team acting basically as support. So, I've started banning him because of this (and I really don't want to).

So, I would like to ask those in High plat+ as to exactly how you keep Yasuo under control, and I need something better than "Just CC him".

Why is he considered "mid-tier" in high elo? What champs specifically counter him? How exactly do you guys trade with him?

Stuff like that. I'd like to know the in's and out's of Yasuo, that way I can use my ban on higher priority champ.

Why is he considered "mid-tier" in high elo?

because his base stats make him insanely squishy that if his shield is down he's going to disappear faster than a marksmen

Yasuo's laning phase is also meh in solo lane and in high elo we prefer right now strong laning phase solo laners I have a game record of a game against Yasuo if you wish on op.gg as mordekaiser

i played safe until lvl 3 and then he couldn't do anything, you just need to not get cheesed by yasuo at lvl 1 or 2 as his spells are spammable

What champs specifically counter him?

most melee champions will do fine against him after lvl 3

How exactly do you guys trade with him?

who are you playing? a mage? you will most likely be out-traded as yasuo is one of their counters which is why he doesn't get mr/lvl (or now 0.5 mr/lvl instead of 1.25) because they would have no chance against him

you're a melee? wait lvl 3 and then if you can proc his shield do it and then all-in him, if you can't then just all-in him

if you're a top laner i don't know how you're having troubles against yasuo unless you're like gangplank who sucks in early game

most likely you try to trade with him at lvl 1 which is no bueno, believe me and just play safe until lvl 3 and you will realise how easy it is to play against yasuo

What do you think about Kat against him? I find that as long as I play safe and bait his windwall(hate that it blocks her ult but luckily in bronze most ppl don't realize that), his shield isn't much of an obstacle and I can burst through for a kill, or if I put a few early points in her E and buy Ionian boots over Scorcerer's(trading back out late game) I can get out quickly after I burst that he can't trade as well.

Ahristocats1 votes

i have no idea

i don't play champions like kat, my experience against yasuo is mainly with bruisers like renekton and darius and with them you need to wait lvl 3 and then can win easily

however from leagueofgraph i can see that yasuo has a bad win rate against katarina

I'm by no means high elo but I assume it comes from better choices mostly. They probably pick better matchup champs, they tend to itemize more efficiently, they control laning better making it much more dangerous for yas to try and farm/harass, they are better at baiting out his windwalls and passive shield to maximize their own damage against him, and overall they tend to do objectives better.

I would imagine they end up grouping faster and taking towers out more often so that they snowball their entire team faster making them overall harder to deal with.

Pathfinder Yasuo5 votes

literally dont play like a retard and just destroy him in lane

Electro5228 votes

See, it's answers like these that I DON'T want.

You can play smart and destroy any champ in lane. But if you're opponent plays smart as well, and is possibly on a champ that they are very comfortable on, you are at a disadvantage.

"Don't play like a retard" is just as bad, if not worse advice than "Just CC him." Give me an actual explanation, and actual tactics as to how to fight him.

Pathfinder Yasuo3 votes

play darius, take fervor and ignite, rush thornmail/tabi/randuins and just smash him repeatedly

follow him around/split push the entire game and do not let him catch up

Very Hard Engage3 votes

because the moment yasuo decides to hard engage, he is easily ganked by the jungler for playing so far forwards, in all other situations where he decides to stay back he gets nothing and you powerspike harder than he does sooner in the 1-2 item range, even when he does have items, he still dies if you initiate onto him first.

Power Cosmic3 votes

Yas is extremely weak to ganks. He basically forces his jungler to counter camp his lane unless he is lucky enough to pick into a mismatch. I am not high elo, but it is good LoL common sense.

Alright, my time to shine.

The big reasons why Yasuo isn't considered nearly as big of a deal are twofold. The first is that his "strong" laning is very highly reliant on the enemy laner mismanaging the wave, which low elo players do consistently but high elo players do rarely. When the minions are managed properly, Yasuo's lane bully potential goes down massively, significantly reducing his frustration level and lowering his chance of snowballing. The second reason is that high elo players are far, far better at managing Yasuo's strengths and keeping him in check. Teamfighting as Yasuo in high elo is very difficult unless you have something like a Zac or Malphite on your team because high elo players A. know how vulnerable Yasuo is whenever his wall is down and are smart enough to now blow ults into it, and B. save low-counterplay CC for the moment he commits to the fight. This leads to most high elo Yasuo's regularly splitting, and while he's a strong duelist and can take towers very quickly, he's extremely vulnerable to being collapsed on and still loses 1v1 to many bruisers and tanks until the very, very late game.

TL;DR They good enough at laning that they rarely feed him 1v1 so he doesn't snowball and they're much better at managing him in teamfights.

Not plat but.... he relies heavily on auto attacks and crit. So in turn getting an attack speed reduction item like a frozen heart always helps... the faster he moves the more often he can get his shield back so a randuins is never a bad item either. If you cut out his mobility and a lot of his attack speed he loses a lot of his potential. Other than that its pretty hard to avoid his ult if the enemy team builds around him for the wombo. If you are playing a squishy your really only hope is safety in numbers and locking him down stay away from minions when you are by yourself so he can't close the gap and never underestimate him at any point in the game or he will kill you.

nice table2 votes

not really high elo but from what i have gathered yasuo really isn't a problem at any elo, sure sometimes he pops off and kill your whole team but yasuo players are kind of like a coinflip they either int or carry ... well when they int they can still carry but ya know.

Takazaki2 votes

the highest i've been is gold. but with 200k mastery on him i think i can chime in

yasuo wants to do 3 things.

Get his 2 item spike as early as possible, kill the enemy back line, combo with his ult

denying him any of these things will severally hinder him and make him detrimental to his team.

When it comes to counter picking him, lane bullies do it best as he has ( IIFC ) the worst base stats of any slayer. Also champion who dont care about windwall Fizz Malzahar Annie Irelia Kennen Riven Swain Viktor are normally ( assuming you dont feed) a good pick into him as they make his wall worthless thus denying him the only real survivability tool he has.

in lane (unless you picked fizz) focus on zoning yasuo off him minions, denying him gold is the biggest factor in turning the 1v9 yasuo into the 0:8 yasuo try to trade with him when ever his tornado is down as he will have to either back off or jump on you ( at which point you can kite backwards and win the trade) try to keep his shield down at all times as this makes his trading potential garbage as his defensive stats are weak. if he rushes early sustain try to focus on zoning and farming and dont go to hard on him and just vamp scepter alone will make you lose trade with him, unless you can kill him with one or 2 rotations dont go in on him as he will heal up and look to get aggressive on you. mid game where he only has PD ( or sometimes shiv) is where yasuo is his weakest. he doesnt have that WDF damage yet nor does he have a reliable way to set up his ult if you catch him off guard. look to kill a solo split pushing yasuo when ever you can as the longer you prevent that 2 item spike the longer you can force team fights which are basically 4v5. once late game roles around you wanna focus on either killing yasuo or just peeling him off your carries. if yasuo cannot kill people he might as wel not be in the game

"try to keep his shield down at all times as this makes his trading potential garbage as his defensive stats are weak." I like this, not a lot of ppl realize how useless his shield is if you're playing someone like Annie, who can just auto from a safe distance.

Yas is an annoying champion. But hes melee and hes squishy. If Yas is set behind its pretty game over. Games generally don't last as long in plat and diamond as they do in other lower tiers so Yas doesn't have alot of time to recover from all the CS loss.

They probably have communication in addition to the level of play that high elo naturally has. As for low elo banning him and in relation to our forum high elo players aren't exactly coming here to tell us how to play against him they just say that they know how to play against him. That's nice but you can't expect us not to ban him when we don't know and you aren't sharing any information.

Robrono1 votes

From what I've seen most high elo players say that the main Reason Yasuo is only played by one tricks in Master/Challenger is that he's so easy to mess up on and punish that they've never had much of a problem with him. That and he is hard countered by champions like Riven, Pantheon, and Jayce, all of whom are popular up there, so the gods of League never tend to have an issue with the devil of League.

If you really want a serious answer you can always donate to someone like Dyrus or Boxbox and they can give you a good answer.

I main top so I mostly play tanks and bruisers, so from that perspective here is how I've dealt with Yasuo in the past.

Start Doran shield and 2x pots, helps with his auto attacks a little, and the regen is nice. First back, buy ninja tabi if you can, its 12% of his damage from auto attacks taken away right out the gate, and then your armor will decrease the damage more. Randuins is a must come mid/late game into a yas due to the crit reduction.

Certain jugernauts can also simply build damage early to shut down a yasuo. Garen and Darius both do really well with this method, as long as you stay away from the minion waves after your trade so he cant try to re-engage on you, but that's true for any champion. (Note, this is specifically for lane phase, if he leaves lane because you beat him and picks up a kill or two you better start building ninja tabi / randuins if you have not already.)

Buying an executioners calling if he builds life steal will also help you deal with him a bit due to the reduction in healing he will receive.

Your info is a bit outdated, Doran's shield no longer reduces aa and single target spell dmg and ninja tabis reduce 10% now.

My bad, still haven't memorized all the changes x_X don't play as often as I used to.

They pay attention to his moves and cooldowns. They predict what he is going to do and respond to it appropriately. They know how the matchup plays or are able to quickly get a general idea of how the matchup will play.

Don't ask "how do I beat Yasuo"

Ask "How does X champ beat Yasuo?"

Since I mainly play mages mid, that's how I'm going to approach the question (for melees, I will follow Rubick and say don't fight at level 1-2, but once you are level 3, you will be stronger).

He's not really that great in mid to high elo because he is fairly susceptible to ganks, he only has conditional long range harass on his Q, and he is fairly squishy. As a mage or marksman, you aren't supposed to 1v1 him outside of landing phase. His kit is designed to win 1v1s against those kind of champions.

If you are laning against a Yasuo, you have to be considerate of your minions and not stand near a full wave (playing Yasuo helps with this, as you start to look for when he is trying to trade). His main trading pattern is to E onto a minion, E-Q-auto onto you, and then escape on another minion (at least that's how I play Yasuo, but I'm not that great at him). Regardless of the exact combo, the thought is the same. E in, damage, E out. You want to change your play style depending on if he starts Q or E, but never fight him at level 2. After 6, dodge his tornado, and you will be good to go. Tl;dr: don't stand near minions.

In mid to late game, if you are playing a squishy backline, you should be with your team. Yasuo will 1v1 you if you are squishy. He is not overly useful in teamfights as long as you position behind your tanks. If he uses his wind wall, just kite backwards and don't waste anything else on the wall (I can't tell you how many times I see people blow an ult on a windwall that was already up when I smurf in bronze/silver).

In short, melees can normally outlane him, and if you are playing a ranged champ, try to poke his shield down before a fight. I hope this helped.
