When bringing up the Ryze rework... [This is about Shen, mostly]

They compared him to Azir and Shen...Azir I get. How is Ryze related to Shen at all? I don't think of him being complex in mechanics at all, especially when compared to these other two.

Maybe in when to commit to actions, ok fine. And his taunt is tough to hit, but those are different sorts of toughness than Azir, which I think of as being Lee-style mechanics, and Ryze who's a matter of remembering Simon-esque patterns, in verying orders, instinctually.

What am I missing here?

I don't know about any upcoming Ryze rework, but the comparison probably has nothing to do with mechanics. Rather it has to do with proplay viability.

Which has been why Shen keeps getting nerfed.

Huh? I see him as a great support assuming you're duo'ing. Solo queue I probably wouldn't use him.

Global shield presence is very good.

Yeah, but that's his ult. It's the moment to moment problems of him taunting, long CDs, and knowing how to take advantage of his blocks that are what I consider beyond solo queue.

Unrelated: Would love to know the rationale behind the downvote.

Idk, I didn't downvote you.

What I'm saying is that Shen's ult is so powerful alone that it warps his state of balance in the highest tiers of play.

Yeah I can't speak to that. I've only ever made it to Silver. But I don't truly understand how that's possible. A shield and a widely broadcasted arrival should be more than enough for players to lay off and get to safety.

Because it allows someone to prevent plays from anywhere

Infrequently, and potentially. Hey, maybe I'm wrong. But I don't see him as that big of a problem. And I play him a fair bit.
