Removing Deathfire Grasp and then adding Duskblade kind of contradicts riot's balance philosophy
Anyone else think this too? Or is it just me?

Their functions were different. You can't compare them just because they both have an active that does damage.
One was a damage amp, the other is an execute.

Unless the execute does overkill damage, dealing damage based on missing health and increasing damage taken are the exact same.

The two DIFFERENT things you said have nothing in common besides they both deal damage.
I am amused you state two different things and say they are the same.
DFG was an active you could choose to use, which amplified all the damage you did in however long. Its garunteed.
The other does 25% missing health, which if you didn't do much damage to them or they aren't missing much, won't do much.

You take 1000 damage. The execute deals 25% of that for a total of 1250. You take 1000 damage. The damage amplification increases that by 25% for a total of 1250.
It's the same thing as long as the execute deals its full damage (and ignoring heals and shields).

When you have to ignore things to make your argument work then they aren't the same.
DFG gave you a 10% max hp nuke from a range before you even started doing anything heck it could even kill someone if they were low enough. The enemy hp didnt even matter because DFG was effective at all hp ranges. DFG also gave you and teammates 4 seconds of amp damage on that target. If you Qss the dfg debuff you still took the 10% max hp damage
Duskblade passive deals damage at the end of the 2 seconds which is still half the time of DFG's active and if you Qss nightfall. Well no damage whatsoever. Sure teammates can help with dealing damage but any enemy heals or shields during that 2 seconds will lower nightfalls damage. Also Duskblade is a passive which means you cant auto attack that enemy champion unless you plan to all in. Finally DFG was bought by mostly ranged champions while duskblade is bought by mostly melee champions.
Oh and just to not leave this out. 10% max hp deals a lot more damage to hp stackers. Nightfalls flat 90 never changes so if you dont do a large chunk of damage you arent getting much out of it which makes it a much less effective tank buster.
No. DFG was far more reliable. The only thing that's similar about them is their actives did damage and they had good stats.

Tell me how an execute passive is more reliable than flat 20% increased magic damage, from your ENTIRE team too?
That's not counting the fact that you can't auto attack a single champion until the champion you actually want to assassinate, while mages can spam everything until they finally have the squishy backline in their sights.
Don't pay attention to him, I don't think he's even used the item.

I know this might be hard to understand but; You do realize that the execute from Duskblade increases the "damage from your ENTIRE TEAM" as well, correct? it doesn't actually amplify your damage, it generates free damage from the missing health of the enemy thus, any strike given to the target will be indirectly/directly amplified by virtue of the health it took away.
It's really not that complicated, your argument is garbage... but let's also remember that Duskblade can refresh whereas DFG never could.
One was an active where you could easily could controll how it wokred while giveing amazeing stats, the other is a passive that you have little controll of that has a hella long cooldown.
Did you just compared this overrated item
to DFG? LOL
no it doesn't
Lets face it, Duskblade was made for
it basically gives him two ults, and we all know he pokes you down with shurikens so he dosnt need autos till he all ins for the kill.
DFG made some of the AP mids more of the devil than they already were, Ludens is a nice item, and less of a killer than DFG...
I wonder how AD champs, and Zed in particular are going to get cock-gobbled next?
At any rate, theyre not super comparable, one was a great 120 AP item with an active that made blasting your enemies easier in the extreme. The other is for Zed and some other champs can use it too.
This item isnt even close to dfg in terms of strength
DOD-- Stat +75 attack damage +5% movement speed Passive UNIQUE: +10 armor penetration UNIQUE: Your next basic attack (on-hit) on an enemy champion applies NIGHTFALL (120 second cooldown). UNIQUE – NIGHTFALL: After 2 seconds, deals 90 (+ 25% of target's MISSING HEALTH~physical damage. If the target is taken down before NIGHTFALL has dealt damage, its full cooldown is refunded.
DFG-- Stats +120 ability power +10% cooldown reduction
Active Unique: Deals 15% of target champion's MAXIMUM HEALTH in magic damage and applies the debuff, Doom, Doom amplifies all magic damage that champion takes by 20% for 4 seconds. ** 90 second cooldown** (750 range).
Much greater 100-0 potential on top of how much easier it was to use, your teams ap damage was buffed by 20%, on top of a cooldown that is 25% shorter, made for a much greater item.
So far i've only really seen Duskblade be really good on Rengar, Talon, and Zed. Idk who else would benefit from it a whole lot... mabye AD lee sin.
