Does Sona need a rework?

Was becoming more popular to talk about on the boards a while back about how she needs some love from Riot, like really bad. It was overshadowed by the whole no urf thing, and other balance issues like Ekko being more popular.

Sona is in a weird state. Riot doesn't really know what she is. What does she excel at? And what should she excel at?

In my opinion Sona should be a huge teamfight oriented support. Rallying her allies with her music, and weakening her foes with music. Her in game fantasy just isn't where it could be. She is just a q spam bot for poke bot lane, maybe a heal every now and then that's sub-par at best. If you want a sustain support Soraka works better. If you want a poke support Karma works better. If you want engage support Leona or just about anyone works better.

So does she need one?

She's never going to be balanced as she is. She deals too much damage to be a support, but has nothing to help her mid lane. Her abilities are brain-dead easy to use, which isn't necessarily a problem, but when her Q+power chord does as much damage as it does it can be real problematic.

You need to recheck the numbers, because Sona's damage output is amongst the worst of the whole support class. Her full combo is outclassed by everyone short of Braum. Due in large part to the fact she's on a short list of rare supports that only have 1 damage spell. Coupled with the additional fact that she has the lowest spell bases and AA damage amongst support as well.

These truths are evidenced in her item build, namely building both artificial damage sources: Lich Bane and Luden's Echo which create fake numbers to use as a crutch for her own complete lack of damage or a usable kit. Without leaning on those crutches, her winrate falls as low as less than 35%.

Sona as a character no longer exists. She's an unplayable mess and has literally disappeared from competitive play, looking as far back as patch 4.13 when she was removed from the game.
