Going to write a book of replies about Sona to Riot Fearless

Yep, this is my daily Sona thread, and i won't stop until riot answers me by either saying that she's going to get reworked, or that they don't care about Sona in high elo (though Meddler indirectly said yes since her last "mini" rework) And today i couldn't help but wanted to point out the absolute dogshit work that fearless did to Sona 2 years ago, a work that no one apparently remembers essentially: -not fixing any problem of her kit (fun interactivity blablablabla) -gutted the shit out of her in high elo

https://i.gyazo.com/080021b5be2700c107fcba15fb9dcc50.png

and it's been like this for years, the rework just made her disappearing from competition, disappearing from master and above i wish Best DotA 2 Sona was still playing league to witness her state in Master and point out the bs of what fearless did

And you want to know what happened? they nerfed her ulti width with the nerf hammer making her ulti completly worthless it went from like the size of kassadin E to what it is right now

https://i.gyazo.com/296176af5dbd66dfd7d026bc17dfa275.png Indeed, like he said it she was ALL ABOUT HER ULTI in higher tier, the only support that could control 5 people was Sona everything else was garbage with low number , and you my friend fearless removed this to make her ulti a 140 seconds cd spell that can stun 1 or 2 targets what could possibly go wrong

https://i.gyazo.com/ef6c0c5ff4097c5557714af58e424306.png

So you give absolutly 0 fuck about Sona player in higher tiers? what kind of mentality is that? you guys think that a champion being played in high elo or not is unrelated to a rework failure or success? why the fuck did we rework ryze then? better let him destroy low elo while being shit in high elo why did you turn him into a "choose the combo" mage giving him 45% win rate in low elo while being a monster in high elo when before it was the opposite? Why did we rework warwick to stop having stat check bruisers in league that destroy low elo? and then you're fine with Sona having 0 mechanic making her stupid in low elo while bringing absolutly nothing to the table in high elo? I mean it's fine, Riot hired ghostcrawler who said "reworking low elo champions into making them harder will make hem lose their popularity" aka "if your main is balanced around low elo deal with it son"

https://i.gyazo.com/e883bae96ee69347768e4d9efa818a5d.png

So, you think you fixed her with that rework? Absolutly nothing changed between the fun brought by old Sona and the fun brought by new Sona

https://i.gyazo.com/45592194df12643fd7a9271a7784b8e9.png

the only fun that Sona brings is the burst while playing her AP, this is what most Sona players feel they hate her entire kite, they hate staying next to an ally to empower him while not seeing the bonus power, they hate not doing anything One can think that thanks to the rework the allies of Sona can see the power that she brings but NOP, it's still invisible, you can't see shit you can't see the power that her Q brings in teamfight, you can't see the shield power unless you have massive AP bringing a karma level of shield nothing Your allies won't say "wow sona! if you didn't hit that diminuendo i would have died for sure!" nothing on earth has been fixed

Enemies still hate playing against Sona, they feel bad when they get poked her Q (talking about low elo here) and high elo players hated when her damage was relevant (as a support) because they couldn't do anything against it leading riot to olaf her damage unless she goes full AP with lichbane which is a fucking joke because she wasn't intended to do this And nothing was done to fixe that

https://i.gyazo.com/386c0b356ad9e54d27b95a74ba78116e.png

YOU DIDN'T DO ANYTHING TO FIXE THAT WTF, the point of your rework was to increase the "fun" of sona yet she still has 3 spammable low impact spells, how the fuck did you do this rework that completly contradicted what you said?

https://i.gyazo.com/927ca054d5788657a33fc1c0baaf31f7.png

and what exactly changed? she still heals for a fcking low number on low cooldown making it bad at saving allies and good at keeping an ally topped off You didn't do anything to make it better, and it still has a low gameplay

https://i.gyazo.com/3d72a890cf9e057e7e28ebeb980548fb.png

what you said here actually makes sens But no one knew that you were going to use this escuse to replace the immense power that her aura brought for low numbers enchentment on low cd that basically does the same thing that her old Aura did, but also weaker since it's not persistent

Well played Sir

https://i.gyazo.com/ed0b9c61537828b4cd9774e73a7c47ad.png

How the fuck did you get to this conclusion? WOWOW wait

where is it written that "Sona can't get skillshots?" ? Does riot have a book of rules where they write random shit that the designers have to follow? You're essentially saying that what makes Sona being Sona, is her ability to have no counterplay+low interactivity+low gameplay decisions? Sona has NOTHING to do with auras, her identity is being a character using magical music to help her allies NOWHERE it is said that it has to be through auras, NOWHERE it is said that it can't be through skillshots or other spells

https://i.gyazo.com/c5715dd9f420aef417e7215e387a18c9.png

And nothing changed, because you refused to change her kit and she remained a generalist that cannot be strong without overshadowing other picks just like LeeSin

https://i.gyazo.com/d527b613c23589e34d4f042d5a184b7f.png

And here is where it ends, because: -you didn't fixe any of the issues you pointed out -you made her no longer viable in high elo equation of the 2: freaking terrible rework

And your mistakes won't be repared for a long time because the VGU list is already filled with Mordekaiser Irelia Kayle Nunu according to Reav3 and now We high elo Sona players are doomed because Riot let you Fearless, a Silver Tank/bruiser main reworking an enchenter

As a Mastery 7 Sona, this thread speaks to me on a spiritual level.

I can't even understand why Riot reworked Sona in the first place. She had 51% winrate, 0% banrate, she wasn't super popular... what was the problem?

The window where she creates meaningful game play are a bit too limited.

AND THEY DIDN'T CHANGE THAT ONE BIT WITH ANYTHING THEY'VE DONE WITH THIS CHAMP.

I'm so fucking tired of being called "useless" every damn game. Sick of it. I'm near 2 million Sona mastery, but I'm honestly considering dropping this champ for good. If I can find better luck with my Nami play (and not get 1/10/1 top laners when I'm working with her), I'm fucking done with this shit.

Three days in a row just "You're useless, you're useless, you're useless". Fuck this shit.

but the champ is balanced around plat, so she should get reworked oh wait fearless already reworked her, and didn't change a goddamn thing

Three years later and I am still just as confused as I was day 1 as to why a Bronze 1/Silver 5, jungle Udyr main was allowed to head a rework on Sona. Going back to when this began, Fearless publicly stated that he, "has never played Sona before. Has never laned against Sona and rarely ever has a Sona on his team."

He completely ignored Sona players' feedback and made uneducated assumptions based on his initial impression from reading her kit for the very first time. Refused to listen to player feedback on PBE, on Live and still to this day 3 years later.

He made a video preaching things like, "I took on this project because I have THICK SKIN and as the lead on a rework you are bombarded with negative criticism." Months later, when these forums were angry for his complete silence and refusal to respond to complaints, he then went back on his original claims saying, "I have been intentionally avoiding the negative feedback and criticisms because they hurt my feelings and make me emotionally sad."

I don't even fucking understand why a Bronze 1 ANYTHING is allowed to work on game design in general. Sona isn't the only failed project Fearless worked on: remember the season 5 jungles changes that made jungling impossible for 97% of jungle champs? Which required half a year of buffing jungle champs, nerfing jungle monsters and countless other improvements? That was Fearless. When the same thing happened again in the season 6 jungle changes? Fearless, a fucking JUNGLE MAIN ruined the jungle TWICE. It's not that Fearless doesn't have a fucking clue about support, he's just incompetent to everything regarding this game, hence why he can't climb above Silver 5.

The juggernaut update? Also Fearless. Fearless has NEVER had a success in his entire employment at Rito Game. He's had a dozen chances and failed all of them. I would've fired his ass on the spot after Patch 4.13 and done a full revert on the Sona gutting.

He completely ignored Sona players' feedback

he talked for pages about "making sona fun" "fixing her interactivity" "fixing invisible power" HE DIDN'T FIXE JACKSHIT he made a rework that ignored everything he has said, while completly nerfing the champion but we can't have old sona back because riot hates auras and we can't have a decent sona because fearless fucked up the rework replacing auras by mechanics that are worse than auras

Miku Hime sama6 votes

Fearless publicly stated that the main intention for the Sona "rework" was to improve her visual effects and particles. He said repeatedly that his sole priority was making certain her skills "looked pretty," any changes to her kit were secondary and pushed straight to Live in whatever state the moment those visuals were finished. "By making Sona's skills flashier and easier to see, her teammates will better see what she's doing and her power won't be invisible anymore."

Fearless' idea for "fixing invisible power" was no different from a 3-year old child. Add more prettier colors.

Sona Player: "But what about the actual skills? You're nerfing their numbers and making practical usage even less noticeable. If anything you're just increasing her invisibility."

Fearless: "Nuh uh! Her teammates will see her hitting buttons, that means she must be doing something! Numbers don't matter if the spells look flashy!"

Sona's kit was literally just an afterthought to Fearless. He could've done the visual update, left her kit alone and saved Rito game these 3+ years of player outrage and lost profits.

ELO and ability to design a champion or knowledge of the game are not mutually exclusive. Plenty of people have extremely good game knowledge, but terrible mechanics. The development of a champion is also tested by a range of ELO, not just the main name attached to the champion...

It seems that your opinion is more about his inability to design fair, balanced and fun things rather than his ELO being the problem.

Hit the head on the nail right there. I feel like building shield Sona is pointless since you give up damage for heal and shield power while Ap Sona gives up nothing and gets both, and arguably supports better like that. No one ever really notices the power of her auras, not a lot of people bother running into them or bothers staying near her at all. As much as I love maining her I feel like she has no presence compared to a support like Thresh.

Papa Andrei8 votes

Honestly, until a full scale rework, they should add a scaling aura width.

Yuzuki Yukarin6 votes

You know, this has been suggested hundreds of times by dozens of players. I guess that just proves Rito isn't listening to us, the customers. Despite their false claims of valuing player feedback.

ModAcademy Kayn4 votes

Just because it's player feedback, doesn't mean it's good.

seasaltcake2 votes

Not to mention even if it's good feedback there is just so much crud to shift through and organize and Rito has enough on their plates at the moment I'm sure. League is the most frequently updated game I've ever played, they have a new game patch every two weeks which is amazing in my eyes.

Just give them some time.

Yuzuki Yukarin2 votes

THEY HAVE HAD 3 YEARS' WORTH OF TIME, HOW MUCH MORE TIME DO YOU WANT US TO GIVE THEM????? There have been 50 thousand threads demanding/suggesting random buffs and/or full reverts to 4.13, yet Sona STILL TO THIS DAY, has never had a true buff in just even a single patch and Rito's claims that they wouldn't hesitate to revert failed concepts has proven to be nothing, but LIES.

You're taking the quotes out of context, which means you either didn't pay attention to her rework two years ago or you're being intentionally misleading.

You say that Riot didn't do anything to change the gameplay of Aria of Perseverance, but they most certainly did. At the time it had a % missing health amp, with the total healing increasing by 1% per 1% missing health of the target, up to 100%. So they definitely made changes to address Sona's healing as a way to save allies.

The % missing health amp was nerfed to a maximum of 50% and then removed entirely in her most recent rework, but quotes from two years ago have nothing to do with her recent changes.

As for not caring about high elo Sona players - why should they? High elo makes up maybe 5% of the playerbase. There are millions more Sona players at Gold and below than at Plat and above. Cry more.

i wonder why they removed it then? they managed to make it saving allies which means it acheived their goals hint: because it was a failure all it did was making Sona's W weak until an ally was low

and having a strong heal when you're low doesn't mean you're saving someone, sometimes you need to save an ally while the ally is at 50% or 60% hp, before he gets nuked

the old %heal amp was holding sona back, while also nerfing her sustain in lane because the base numbers were kept weak on purpose due to it

thanks for your pointless comment

Actually this is an accurate sumary of what i feel when i pick Sona. She is simple to play and there's not much to pay attention in her kit, and i kinda like it because i play her when I want to disconnect the brain and just smash the keyboard and listen to the music. But at the same time, i feel like this leads to a boring gameplay in which I don't feel to have any impact at all. I wouldn't mind if she was reworked to something more interactive, something that actually made me feel I'm participating.

I am a rank 7 sona, however I am only silver 4-5. I definitely underst and where you are coming from but I do love the way sona works. I don't think the problem is sona, but the way supports are forced to be effective with low gold. Ap sona is a hyper carry support that works wonders with her burst and 100% upkeep with ardent censer on the whole team during the late game. The problem is that it takes a decent amount of gold to get there.

If you increase the amount of gold supports can get and then increase the gold values of the support items, so they in turn are better items (at least stat wise), all supports would be more effective...including sona.

Also, the support items in the game do not help sona alot. Sona needs ap to be good. Which I would assume you think it is bad. I dont. I think that fact all the good support items don't give ap is bad. Locket and redemption do not give ap, so once you use them....their stats are kinda dead weight on sona (not the mana regen tho). If zekes got a rework to be a good item...that would definitely help sona.

I really don't want sona reworked...I love her now. I want items and the way supports get gold to be change. That would make supports a more wanted role and allow for even better support items.

Gold really should not be the issue for a champion that is meant to support.

I don't think you understood my post. I'm basically saying that maybe the low income aspect of supports should be changed. So champions that require more gold can come online as support and support items can be even better.

Reasons why I'm content to stay in bronze: Sona is a totally viable champion.

[slayer-pantheon-thumbs]

Jokes aside, when it comes to Sona, I'm a little mixed. Like many others in the QQ threads, I am also a Sona Main. Sona was one of the first champions I picked up in this game, and I've been playing her since Season 3 (when I first started playing). Gosh...her rework was so long ago that I can't even remember the old Sona, other than the infinite auras and stacking auras (and the awful aura animation...I do admit, I like the new animation SO MUCH BETTER). And sure, you can throw the old numbers at me, but I really don't care for numbers, lol. For me, playing Sona is just a fun and genuinely enjoyable experience.

BUT, she can be a little underwhelming, especially when she's behind. I think being behind as Sona is both the worst feeling ever...but also, not as bad as people make it out to be simply because of the flexibility of her kit. (for example: you're ahead? Go chase the enemy down and burst them while laughing hysterically, it's okay! vs. you're behind? Stay back and focus on keeping your team alive and getting them ahead, it's okay!)

Now, I'm a bronzie, and I know my opinion on balance is invalid and will be disregarded.

That being said, I think Sona could use some quality of life buffs, almost exclusively on her W. I'm still upset that they took off the bonus healing on her W when allies were low on HP--now I feel like her W is less effective, even though they technically "buffed" the raw numbers. Lol, ok Riot, "balance." Sona's heal is already weaker than others, so I don't think that was necessary. But mostly I think she needs Power Chord change on her W. Maybe instead of damage reduction to an enemy champion, she could cause Grievous Wounds or reduced healing--you know, something that actually relates to HEALING EFFECTS on her HEALING ability. #clarity Other than that, I generally like the rest of her kit. I wouldn't mind sacrificing the safe poke of Q for a stronger skillshot based ability...and now I'm at the point where in the meta where AP supports, like Zyra and Malzahar and Brand, are popular and strong picks, I think it should be fair to let Sona do a little bit more damage to compete with them. If she's going to be the squishiest champion in the game that can be one-shot by basically anyone, she should be allowed to deal a lot of damage. I think giving her more damage could also make her more viable, as why pick your standard AP Support when Sona can also compete with them while giving more to her team? Like many Sona mains, I would personally love to see Sona played by the pros in competitions, maybe even Worlds.

But that's just my humble Bronze opinion. All I know is I don't want a complete rework of Sona. I don't want them to drastically change her kit or theme.

The Stoic Hero2 votes

Personally, I just think people do not build Sona properly, even in higher tiers. Though her kit is missing a lot of what it use to, I really like Sona currently, and with a good/cooperative team, I have even carried games with her.

I know I am not the best Sona player in the world and that people have a right to build as they see fit, but every time I see a Sona running Thunderlords, I lament the wasted potential. Windspeaker is so much more powerful on her, especially when you 5 man shield your team in the middle of the fight, turning the tide, and winning the battle.

The issue here is most players that run Thunderlords build AP and those who run Windspeaker run full Support. Neither build ends up working out so well, though, as you either are sacrificing too much utility for damage you are never going to apply, or having all the utility but being next to useless elsewise. Thats why I play an aggressive AP Sona support with Windspearker.

I start with the following as it gives me a safe yet powerful start:

item 1056 item 2055 item 3340

This allows you to snow ball in the early game, especially once you get E to roam mid and help keep pressure and pick up assists. If do end up getting any number of assists before 10 mins, my first back is usually a Sightstone to really start controlling our side of the map or helping other lanes that need it while my ADC farms and gets ahead. If not, I will grab a Spelltheif's edge to help my gold income and poke.

I try to complete my Eye of the Watchers and Boots first, then start going in to damage items, which differ from most AP and Sona builds. This is my full build path, though rarely you get to it as if you are doing your job right, the game should be over quickly.

item 2301 item 3158 item 3285 item 3151 item 3100 item 3116

I focus on getting assists and taking objectives to help supplement my gold income as well as soaking up experience whenever I can. No one expects the Sona ganks!

This kind of roaming support playstyle I developed while mainning Janna seasons 1-4. Unfortunately with her seeing play in the LCS, they completely nuked her damage and gutted her ability to do this. This is when I became a Sona main. Her damage, roaming potential, and utility just far exceeds all but the unbridled utility of pure support Janna, which I find a bore to play.

So, I can sympathize with your plight, that the champion you most like does not feel as beneficial or impactful as you like, especially when you have teammates who do not know how to capitalize off her strengths. However, I must say that your conclusion is lacking in merit.

Sona's [somewhat] unavoidable Q poke makes her useful in a game where increasingly high mobility champs are becoming the norm, her aura's provide an increasingly impactful benefit to the team, and though I would not mind her ult being widen a little, it is still one of the best CCs with damage in the game.

The reason why Sona does not see play in higher tiers has little to do with her kit. It mostly comes down to players in that ranking knowing how to play around and against her. She is a high risk, high reward snowball support champion and most players would rather have a safer, more boring pick like Janna when it comes to support. And like others have said, she works best with AP in her build, and most players are too deadlocked into current support build path to deviate from that.

Duke of Sloths2 votes

If you have opinions on how Sona can be fixed, or what you'd like to see out of her then that would probably help more than criticizing 2 year old Fearless posts.

They did do something right, communicating power chord is very understandable as Sona's enemy and they made her poke more interactive/risky.

Her issues is she is too much of a generalist, her skill ceiling is low, and her Gameplay is binary. So what direction do you specifically want her sent? How could they fulfill the fantasy she occupies in your opinion?

I think the issue is Riot feels Sona needs to be Aura Centric, when there was always the option to make her Aura targeted. When Karma breaks out her R empowered E, she does not need to self cast that. Heck, there was a time she could target a minion wave to tag allies slightly out of reach.

As it stands, a lot of enchanters utilize point and click shield/healing. I've always wondered if it would be worthwhile to have at least one of them be skill shot based, like an AoE target similar to Morgana's Tormented Soil. Sona could transition into a high utility zoning support that creates fields of Discord (damage), Resonance (health) and Tempo (speed). While there are plenty of damage zoning skills in the game, there are very few utility zone skills in the game. I think Trundle's only applies to himself. Orianna is the only other MS zone buff that I can think of. As for healing zones, Janna's R is the first that comes to mind and that's another skill that I felt should move away from being Centric.

I don't know if they will ever change Sona beyond number changes. Having an Ultimate Skin really makes me doubt any serious changes would ever be done.
