If we're going to drop a bracket or two, then why do lowbies get placements

So I think I finished in B5 last season, possibly B4. If we're going to be downgraded anyway, why give me placements at all? I ask largely because again - that bracket has the most deadweight of all of them - why give the trolls there a chance to ruin other people's placements.

It establishes your MMR for when you start climbing. If you ended bronze 5 but go 8-2 in placements you wil lget bronze 5 with bronze 3 or 2 MMR making it easier to climb. If you go 2-8 you will have b5 placement with b5 MMR making it very hard to climb

If you got B3 MMR then you should be B3 not B5

Placements is just to make it more of a grind and keep people playing.

The WHOLE MMR system is a gimmick to keep you from climbing JUST enough so you feel like playing another match or a match tomorrow while also keeping you down.

This is wrong, MMR is what Riot thinks your skill level is, but not what you have actually earned so while Riot thinks you may play at a B3 level you are unable to leave b5 and b4 which is why your MMR drops and it is obvious you don't deserve that elo. On the flip side if you do climb to it then Riot was correct and you will stay right there

Typically it places you a little lower than you were last season, but if you raise your MMR between seasons and play consistently at a higher level your placements can actually place you higher than you were before. That's why the bottom of bronze still has to do placements, because they can be placed higher.
