Simple fix for Cho'Gath + Gargoyle Stoneplate interaction

HalcyonDweller··4 votes·1,637 views

Make Gargoyle Stoneplate grant a shield for the duration instead of bonus health.

Boom, problem solved without actually nerfing anybody unnecessarily.

Not my idea, just repeating here because I thought it was good.

This is actually a nerf to: Sion Shen DrMundo Maokai Nautilus Poppy Skarner TahmKench Vladimir Volibear Zac

Because they all defensive mechanics (not just offensive) that scale off of their maximum/bonus health that are increased by Stoneplate. Some might need a nerf, but others do not.

stoneplate rduces your damage by 60% did you forget about that?.

This is why I think it would be OK. It is supposed to reduce damage dealt over its duration. So that's not really a problem.

Although WAAAGH did raise a good point that it will affect other synergies with having high health. Then again those synergies were all designed in a time before an item that doubles your health existed... So I am inclined to believe that it wouldn't have unintended consequences to take that synergy with this item away from those characters.

Get your head out of the offensive rear end.

Champions like sion lose out on a ton of tank potential with a change like this on stoneplate. Sion has a shield that scales with max hp thath e can use in conjunction with stoneplate. Tanks that have max %HP sustain mechanics also lose out with changes like this.

?

They were designed and balanced in a time before having this massive HP steroid. It's addition gave them a cool but completely overpowered synergy with doubling health way beyond what those abilities were balanced for. I do not believe it would do anything to affect those champions' former states of balance from before the item was introduced.

If you drop the superiority complex for a second and think about what I'm saying you might realize that I have a point.

The interaction this item has with true damage is wrong. It needs to be changed somehow. How that is done I don't really care. It can be made to reduce true damage, or it can be changed to not be a huge HP steroid. Or hell, even Cho'Gath could individually be changed so that his Ult doesn't get that special scaling from active items and abilities that temporarily increase HP. It could be called temporary HP, as a new form of HP similar to shielding but still counting as HP in most cases. Except cases like Cho'Gath where they break the game with a particular mechanic that scales off of HP.

There are still plenty of other tank items that are good now. Even if this one item's interaction were lost, it wouldn't revert tanks to their previous state of trash tier.

We would hope if Riot does nerf stoneplate that they'd compensate champions like Voli who aren't doing to hot or that the nerf would hurt a lot. We've seen Riot balancing before though, and I doubt we'd get something so nice.

The only unintended side effect I could see to this would have new synergy with items and masteries that improve shielding power (those work on your own shields, right?).

Otherwise sounds like it'd work pretty well. Also helps to prevent the gargantuan Locket + Stoneplate shield Cho can make.

Good point, I hadn't thought about shielding synergy. I am slightly less confident that this change would be a perfect solution, but I do still stand by it.

This is an interesting change. There's more to this than just Cho'gath and the Locket of the Iron Solari combo though.

Other champions, such as Zac or Sejuani, that have health scaling will do less damage during Stoneplate's active as a result of this, and furthermore the damage you dealt to the user during Stoneplate would not splash over onto their health.

It is supposed to reduce damage dealt over its duration. So that's not really a problem.

Other synergies may be warranted, but then again the abilities that take advantage of the item were designed and balanced long before the item became a thing, so it shouldn't have any unbalanced impacts on the champions with such synergies.

well what about people like sion who get bonus hp shield from his w?

HalcyonDweller1 votes

That is a great point, and honestly the only thing I see as being a proper fix without nerfing that and other interactions would be to create a new stat called temporary HP. Abilities could be changed to scale based off of Max, Current, or Total HP depending upon if Riot thinks it fair for them to scale off the health boost granted by active abilities or items.

Cho'Gath for example, should have an ult that scales based on Max, not Total. Thus preventing him from gaining absurd true damage from gaining his HP in temporary health.

Yes that's correct. Sejuani's HP scaling is pretty garbo compared to how it used to be.

It's more of a Cho Gath issue if Stoneplate gets nerfed.

I don't think champions should be able to build an item that gives tankiness and damage at the same time, at least to the extent that stoneplate offers. Stoneplate represents a damage spike for Cho and to a lesser, but still significant degree, Zac and Sejuani, and I don't think that interaction is healthy for the game.

Alternatively, get rid of the damage reduction/true damage interaction that lets this happen. When you use Stoneplate, you do less damage. True damage shouldn't magically ignore that.

I agree, however if that proves too difficult or cumbersome to the code, this would still work.
