Illaios's ban ratio shows how people waste bans

DropFill··43 votes·3,068 views

23.35% for a champion that :

  • Totally relies on a slow skillshot situational passive that is totally easy to destroy when you are ranged
  • Has 0 engage tools
  • Has 0 disengage tools
  • Has a pathetic heal that is only decent if you hit like 4 tentacles.

Please, she needs buffs. Not huge ones for sure, but she is not even close to be OP.

I think people just don't like playing against her.

Probably don't consider her op or anything but some people consider her frustrating as hell.

Also, some people might not trust their teammates to know how to deal with her.

Retillin4 votes

This so much.

They are adding (or did add) the "assists" on killing her tentacles. That should help to lower her ban rate.

Zeke Maelstorm1 votes

Can agree. From the standpoint of a jungler ganking her is an absolute nightmare because of Test of Spirit (E). If you get hit by it you end up wasting time clearing out tentacles until you can safely farm again (In addition to the time wasted on the likely failed gank).

This is why I permaban Mundo. I don't really think he's that OP, but he is so frustrating to deal with I'd rather just not have him in the game.

I don't think she's necessarily OP. Definitely strong, and for good reason considering her limited mobility and telegraphed attacks.

But the fact that I have to deal with that on top of 4 other bloodthirsty goons is something I'd rather not do. Not to mention I don't trust people in my MMR bracket to know how to deal with her...

Only frustating thing about her is being hit by her E Which is slow, range is not great, and if you are ranged, it is easy to avoid the tentacles in case you become the vessel

I guess you still don't understand his comment. You know how everyone on these boards has this hatred for Lee sin even though most of them have probably never seen one worth being afraid of. Same thing with Illaio. Rationalize all you want about how she isn't OP. That doesn't matter people just don't like her and would rather play the game without her in it, that's why they ban her.

Her math is not what anyone is banning. Her overwhelming lane presence is what they're banning. She's LoL psychological warfare at its finest, with all due respect to Heimer. Just like, from a mathematical standpoint, Teemo is not a must ban champion, but if you're banning based on annoyance factor, he can be an excellent choice.

Not everyone has diamond elo priorities. Some people... and I know this will sound insane to many League players... but some people actually engage in leisure activities in order to relax and enjoy themselves.

Wheatloaf5 votes

Let's be honest, League isn't exactly the best way to "relax".

Ayame Isaki1 votes

I ban her for the same reason I ban blitz; I just don't want to deal with her (and don't feel like explaining to yet another top laner how her kit works only to have them feed her). To be fair, if forced to choose between banning her or Tahm, I'd ban Tahm every time.

Ralanr10 votes

I'm always surprised to see her banned. There are better bans.

Like Fiora. Or Fizz.

Shonjl10 votes

I don't think she is OP, I also don't like playing smackatenacle. If her E was different, or actually had a real debuff timer(Aka not a minute long) Then she would be fine. Til then I will continue making her not exist.

A Miss Fortune4 votes

The only reason I think she's worthy of being banned is because she's a Juggernaut that does a stupid amount of damage in teamfights.

Nanuk Pihoqahiak2 votes

You can CC her out of her ultimate or you can simply walk away from her. If your entire team is getting cc'd by something like a Galio ultimate and she's making plays off of it, you deserve to lose.

Sahn Uzal2 votes

Don't tell anyone, but the only CC Illaoi has is the slow when you try to walk away from her E, and all of her damage is bound to the tentacles Tentacles can not move. Now that you realise this, you might want to consider walking away from her tentacles. When you are out of Range from the tentacles, they can not damage you. summoner 31

Can't do anything when you're already hit by an Annie and Amumu ult.

I'm talking about Illaoi as a wombo-combo Juggernaut.

Sahn Uzal1 votes

C'mon bud.. Even if Illaoi was a monster in wombo combos, she really doesn't do a lot OUTSIDE of those situations :P summoner 31

I'm talking about Illaoi as a wombo-combo Juggernaut.

So your problem with Illaoi is that she fits wombo combo team comps?

Do you have a similar problem with Miss Fortune, a champion who is considerably more successful than Illaoi right now, and has been since Illaoi's release? A champion who also synergizes very strongly with wombo combo team comps and is frankly a better, more versatile pick in general?

A Miss Fortune1 votes

The difference between Miss Fortune and Illaoi are colossal. One of which being Miss Fortune dies instantly without peel and Illaoi doesn't. Miss Fortune is arguably less mobile than Illaoi because her Q, E, and R all root her in place and her W passive is worthless in combat. Illaoi's base movement speed is actually higher than Miss Fortune's too.

I never said I had a problem with her and I'm not really calling her overpowered, but Illaoi can carry games insanely well in a lot of cases. Just because I said a champion is ban worthy doesn't mean they're overpowered. I think Amumu is extremely ban worthy but it's not because he's overpowered by any means.

I agree. For example, one difference is Illaoi is bad and MF has been one of the strongest ADCs since pre-season.

One of which being Miss Fortune dies instantly without peel and Illaoi doesn't.

Meanwhile MF dies less often on average.

http://champion.gg/statistics/#?roleSort=&sortBy=general.deaths&order=descend

Miss Fortune is arguably less mobile than Illaoi because her Q, E, and R all root her in place and her W passive is worthless in combat. Illaoi's base movement speed is actually higher than Miss Fortune's too.

Meanwhile, MF is, you guessed it, ranged, whereas Illaoi literally has to put herself in the middle of the enemy team to make use of her kit.

If that is the case, why defend MF in comparison to Illaoi? You should just acknowledge that MF is considerably better, and maybe also admitted that she is more ban-worthy than Illaoi.

Illaoi can only carry with the right comp, assuming the enemy team isn't bad.

And unlike Illaoi, Amumu is very strong. He's one of those champions who seems to be forever hidden OP.

It's true that she's garbage, but it's never her that I'm worried about when I ban her (and I hate banning her because there are far better bans, so much so that I won't waste the ban if I get top). People have consistently shown, in my level of play, that they are too stupid to deal with her. They don't bother to learn what she does, they don't bother to learn what counter her, they just rush in and die over and over gain.

Jbirdsando4 votes

I think she is fine aside from her E, she does not need buffs if she is going to have an ability like her E. If she manages to capture someone with an E and turn them into a Vessel, her E should be on CD until that vessel is removed. Reduce the mana cost on her E and there you go. That way a person can choose to live with dodging the tentacles to leave the Illaoi without an E. She can permanently E you, easily, and it is very annoying with how slow the tentacles appear.

ParaBellam3 votes

I said this from the start. She's literally idiot test: the champ where her strength goes down exponentionally the better the enemy is. If he understands that you can attack Illaoi to reduce the duration of her E, her power drops in half. If he understands you can move out of her ult, there goes another chunk. If he can dodge slow skillshots, she becomes useless.

She is by far the most reliant on the enemy laner being bad or uneducated. If he is, she has a great time. If he isn't, she gets destroyed. This isn't a good design.

the problem with her is. if she gets tanky and is in the middle of the fight with her ulti, the does a lot of dmg and healing. if you get her as an enemy on aram you know what i mean. because with snowball its not hard to hit 3-5 ppl. and at that point she is just deadly. but yea otherwise she is really weak.

its... fucking aram.

there is no space to move, and the tentacles almost cover the entire lane. its a nonstop siege, and she can put put tentacles everywhere. and she can use the snowball to get into the middle of your team from considerable distance. somethign she doesnt have on sr.

just dont let her walk into the middle of your entire team and youre golden.

I find her a lot like pre-rework Darius in that she excels at taking advantage of players with poor macro-game skills but otherwise is useless to the team

I think it's because people don't want to adjust how much they play against certain champs too much.

I mean really, the literal key to fighting her is to always move. She even tells you this herself!

No one likes to deal with whack a tentacle all day during lane phase. Teemo? Toxic but you get until vll 6 for the shrooms and he falls off hard.

She is close to GP. Gives you a mini game that gives way to much annoying power. You are ranged? Well illaois has sustain to deal with thath and still make your life miserable if you come too close. You are melee? Hahaha.. have fun in a Darius lane.

Yorick got removed from rotation for being annoying.

Illaoi sustain is attached to her tentacle... that you can destroy easily while being ranged.... so basically she has no sustain.

Vistha Kai2 votes

Because "OP" isn't always the best reason to ban a champion.

Frankly, I played aganist Illaoi top twice as melee and I absolutely hated it. Her laning is obnoxious and one dimensional.

You either have a way to deal with tentacles instantly or you get neurosis, not being able to do as much as getting near minions, because of the constant need to play her stupid mini-game.

Sahn Uzal1 votes

Try playing Zac VS her and duel her. You wanna slap me with that tentacle of yours? Whoops, I just walked out of it, what a shame. Oh and again! Whoopsies, again!

He does not need to stand still to pump out his damage, he uses his stuff and walks around to pick up those blobs. Making that Illaoi useless was actually really enjoyable.. summoner 31

Heimer doesn't get banned, and, as a melee, there is nothing you can do against heimer early. At least against illaoi you can dodge her tentacles

Sahn Uzal2 votes

She is having a little change (I think it should be considered a buff) on PBE

Illaoi Test of Spirit (E) Mana cost reduced to 35/40/45/50/55 from 35/45/55/65/75 Missing E no longer roots for .25* For enemies that are vessels - "Teammate killing a tentacle within 5 seconds of you hitting it as a Vessel will still count (tentacle assists are now possible)"*

DorkunedAuras1 votes

That tentacle assist thing was something that should've shipped with her. it's FAR FAR too easy for allies to deny you those kills to remove the debuff.

Space Bum1 votes

How to beat illaoi in lane: Pick a champion with built in sustain. Get a vamp scepter. Build a health/armor item. Boom it does not even matter if she pulls your vessel. Let her and continue farming while you watch her whale on it while your health bar does not move and she does not have the damage to kill it.

Yeah and we also can't team fight at all with her around, lest she ult and destroy at least 2 of us, if not more if we're clumped.

delonix1 votes

Win rate is a measurement of how often people win with that champion, not whether people know how to play a champion or not. Solid champions who are considered OP often have inflated pick rates, which masks their strength by decreasing the win rate. I don't think this is the case for Illaoi, but she does have an abysmal 7.39 playerbase average games played, significantly lower than any other champion. This almost certainly contributes to her low win rate. Her win rate for people with 15-50 games on her is actually 54.1%, which suggests that there are some people who know how to play her, and are very successful with it.

Also, I think that Illaoi's passive % missing health heal per tentacle per champion increases the perception that she is strong; it isn't just her E. If she hits 3 champions with her ult in a teamfight, she can start healing up to 45% of her missing health every 2 seconds for 8 seconds, while the tentacles are untargetable. (This assumes she is hitting only 3 champions with only 3 tentacles. The real number is highly variable, as it scales with both number of tentacles hitting champions and number of champions hit per tentacle.)

Side note: champion.gg lists her win rate for 125+ games as 0%, which probably means a very small sample size of games played by players with 125+ games played on Illaoi. This is backed up by the extremely low playerbase average games and her average win rate of 45.37%. It's extremely unlikely that the 0% is a meaningful statistic.
