Leauge - 30% skill, 70% strategy?

Been playing a bunch of ranked lately, and I have noticed the above. Games are not so much lost because of a huge skill gap between tiers, but because of horrible shot calling and teamwork. So many times now I have lost games because team-mates make horrible Baron calls, or attempt to jungle when they should be defending.

To me it comes so obvious and second hand being a top 100 strategy game player (Company of Heroes, Warhammer). Using a champion with only 4 abilities and a few actives from items is nothing compared to 20+ different units every game with each of their own in game abilities. So when we push their base, take inhib and then retreat with 2 champs, while they have all 5 hot on our tail, that doesn't mean you go baron. To me it's simple logic. That's an example that happened last night. I pinged about 4 times, and typed in chat to RUN!!!, instead 2 members try to solo baron, do only about 3/4 damage, get owned.... then the enemy takes baron and steam rolls our base for the win.

Next game, almost a mirror of that one. We lost early game, but I managed to carry and bring us back. With our last push we take out their entire base, just the nexus stands until we have to retreat. Me (Swain) and Lee Sin are both doing good in the health department but run while we are being chased by the whole team. I decide we can take them with an ambush at Baron and tell the team to bait them at Baron so we can finish them off and win. What happens? The other 3 members of our team begin trying to kill Baron. By the time the enemy shows up, Baron is half dead, the 3 champs are half dead, and me and Lee attempt to fight it out. We lose, I barely escape and so does Lee while they now easily take Baron and walk into our base and take the win. This is also after Lee Q's one enemy and jumps into a 5 on 1 and gets destroyed (Why must EVERY Lee follow up on a Q hit, it's like some moron flowchart).

We HAD that game.... all the team had to do was listen, and just use a bit of strategy. You see the whole team coming, they are all full health. You can't take Baron in time, but you try anyway and lose half of your health. Horrible decision making. Again I don't feel it's the skills that set many players apart the most in ranked. Being completely out played in a highlight reel happens very rarely. It more or less comes down to playing safe, and making educated decisions.

I'd say it's about 10% luck, 20% skill, 15% concentrated power of will, 5% pleasure, 50% pain, and 100% reason to remember the name.

Don't forget that 0.5% that complement and make players feel good, win or lose.

Sorry to diasspoint you, but league is in no relation to luck. (except critical chances, but it's not even close to 10%.)

League includes tons of luck. Being much more skilled than your opponent means you can overcome bad luck, and a large number of games will balance out luck, but there is still luck.

The luck comes in a few flavors:

  1. risky decisions. Such as facechecking a bush (sometimes necessary), choosing to start at a different buff b/c you are anticipating counterjungling, or waiting near a lane planning on counterganking.
  2. teammate quality
  3. mechanics (crit chance and smite dueling, for example).

I would go even further and say that it's 80% strategy, and 19% skill. (The remaining 1% chance is relating to getting matched with teemos or not.)

For strategy part to take effect well you need all 5 to be working together and to get 4 others who are willing like that on your team requires luck or premade. just one rebel is enough to lose the game

Its a combination of Skill, Strategy and Luck granted by the matchmaker

When lee hits Q he can only see that enemy and thus goes in presses E and then realizes his mistake :P

Worgslarg4 votes

Strategy is as simple as rotating bot with the jungler for a 4 man gank and dragon instead of hard pushing mid when your laner backed, or as complex as the proper ward locations to get catches on the enemy.

Lord Dusteon2 votes

Though, some champions require more skill (Riven, Lee Sin, Cassiopeia), this seems pretty correct.

The Whamboozler1 votes

Riven requires skill? Since when?

AtheosisX2 votes

I'd say it's 50/50. Strategy often doesn't even really come into it when all your lanes just get crushed by superior mechanics or the other team's cs is vastly superior. Strategy only really starts to matter when both teams are relatively close in terms of their mechanics and champ control.

DaCush1 votes

Nah, think it leans more in favor of strategy when you're the team that is down in cs and kills and you have to somehow win teamfights or put pressure on objectives to stall the game out and catch up.

50% luck, 50% skill and 0% teamwork. it's non existent in gold and below

BlackRaven1 votes

TBH 80 percent luck, 5% the champ, 10%strategy, 4% knowledge, 1% skill

Old Man Teeto1 votes

Meh.

I disagree greatly.

Game is closer to 80% mechanical play, 20% strategic play.

You'll win more games following textbook, non-innovative, repetitive strategies with strong mechanic's than you will with poorer mechanic's and smart strategy.

SecretAgentHulk1 votes

Unless a lane feeds hardcore, mid- to late-game teamfighting is where games are won or lost.

Sailor Mint1 votes

A lot of games won't have any proper teamfights. Just smaller skirmishes and lots of picks.

SecretAgentHulk1 votes

That's strategy. Ultimately a team is going to have to push towers somehow, and how they do it has nothing to do with mechanics.

Sailor Mint1 votes

I guess Bronze games would be a clash of skill vs skill since both teams have poor decision making . It's still about which team has the worst decision making throwing the game.

If you're losing even teamfights, that would be getting outskilled. Losing because you lose a turret everytime someone gets picked off has to do with strategy side of the game.

I think it's fairly easy to bridge the skill gap using proper decision making. Did somebody say rotations?

One of the ways skill manifests itself is strategy. Playing strategically isn't cheating.

True. You might not be able to hit your entire burst every time, or maybe you can't use your actives perfectly. However going blindly into an enemies jungle, and just warding river instead of running straight up it to get to mid are far worse bad habits that get you killed. I'd rather you with a 0-0-3 score, than the enemy having a 3-0-0 score. If you don't have a ward, check bushes with a skillshot before going in if you have the slightest of hunches the enemy could be there.

I've been bad for that too... "hmm.... LeBlanc COULD be there.. eh.... not worth my mana with Xerath to Q it though" walk in, instantly become deleted. I have seen people with amazing micro. They get great last hits on farm and land skillshots like no other; but make horrible decisions on calls, and are very, very greedy. If the kill isn't 100%, if the turret has a good chance of killing you, whats the point of going in especially when you are already outplaying them, and have more minion kills. You can't come down too hard on him, but it reminds me of the game of Team Solomid VS SSW, when Amazing totally jumped the gun on their backdoor plan. It potentially cost them the entire game. Can't say that play alone is why he is no longer with the group, but it shows the importance of strategy over skill in that situation. Just play smart people, the skill and the kills will then fall into place.

I Main Swain1 votes

i agree completely. you need both to be able to do well consistently, however, i guess strategy is a little more important. Everybody knows those matches where the one team basically wins in champ select (unless theyre retarded and throw out the butthole, hence the skill) because their team is just so godteir, you will never win a fight. and then on the flip side theres the teams that dont communicate at all and just yolo pick whoever and you end up with something weird like yi ashe gnar taric and anivia.

but anyways i agree especially with the baron sentiment. so frikin often ill have teamates be like "hey, we're only lvl 12 and they are ahead but lets take baron!" and so they try, enemy team comes at the tail end and aces them and theyre still wondering what happened. seriously people, barons bad call to good call ratio is probably about 20/1 at least. only do baron if you cant take towers, get kills, and you KNOW you will get it.

I think personally, it would have to be something around 5% Luck, 40% Skill, 50% Strategy, and the last 15% is us neglecting our Math Homework.

Interesting that you play Swain - a character with a personality like it is, seeing as how you're such a strategic mind.

Penteano1 votes

Pretty much. Once the Dominate Gaming guys made a Dominion tournament, they challenged the high Diamond SR teams to join. A team of Dominion players that are bronze in SR defeated them. They knew how the mode works, every strategy you can use and team comps. The Diamond SR team had no chance. So yes strategy and knowledge counts a lot, but then you can consider it a skill too maybe.

Sailor Mint1 votes

What you meant to say is 30% Mechanics, 70% strategy.

Micro / Mechanical skill / Relevant to playing your champion. Macro / Strategy / Relevant to playing the game.

i.e.: Last hitting falls under micro, when you go back to base and what you buy falls under macro.

PigCheese1 votes

there's about 3 things you need to be good

Game Knowledge: which includes what items to build and descion making and your role in teamfights and what your team and enemy champions do. Mechanical skill: knowing where to position yourself and reacting and taking the best actions in fights or in repetitive tasks like csing Vision: buy wards.

You can probably add one or two things but the top two can carry low elo pretty well. You can turn an entire game around by getting your team to barron when the enemy is all bot for no reason. Though in very low elo people hardly listen to objective calls unless there's a 90% chance to throw the game.

u forgot taktiks... imo, it'S more 15-20% mechanics, 30-35%taktiks, 45%-55%strategie( and with the current state of crit, probably 10-15% luck -,-) I've won so many fights that should have clear been lost cause we had much better tactical play and shot calling than the enemys.

Yùsùkè1 votes

Anything below Diamond it is pure mechanical skills that does the job. You can be the worst tactician ever, but still make it easily to Plat, if you are skilled enough. But the opposite doesn't work - you can't be worst skilled player and still make it by tactics only. Tactics make a huge difference when people are similarly skilled, but other than that, not really.

Strategy IS skill.

Kingsgrave1 votes

I feel like both Strategy and Skill in this game are equal. With the right strategy or approach you can defeat a skilled opponent and a highly skilled opponent can possibly beat a certain strategy against them if played correctly. Thought vs Performance.

The truly great players are the ones that use both.

Actually LoL is 0% strategy, because Riot goes to any length to remove any actual strategy from it. It's 90% pve and 10% mechanics.

Riot in its infinite wisdom has 3 latin servers, and one NA server. super duper smart. Why do they have 3 servers....they don't even have clean water.... Us east coast players are stuck playing at 130-140 ping everygame. I switched to LAN and play at 40 ms...guess what? i jumped up a whole tier...and im still climbing. The pros are Cali in for the ping while Riot gives a middle finger to the rest of us. I made the realization that they aren't good....they are just at really low pings.
