@Riot, we haven't had a Demacian or Noxus champion in over 4 years.

Will we get another one soon? It just seems like they aren't canon anymore.

We've been talking about the lack of Demacian/Noxian champions ourselves a bit too recently. TLDR is we would like to make some more at some point. We've seen stronger opportunities in other factions/archetypes for a while though. That's in part because quite a few of the bigger Champion Updates (Sion, Poppy, Taric) are associated with those factions (and so too are some of the stronger candidates for future large updates, Galio and Swain for example), so that creative space is still getting worked in. I'm sure we'll see new champions from both Demacia and Noxus sometime though.

I thought you mainly do gameplay. but it seems like you are a lot interested in other areas of champion design as well.

RiotMeddler21 votes

Oh definitely. I find the thematic, visual etc parts of champion design really interesting too and developers here are strongly encouraged to get involved with parts of creative process outside of just their main area of focus. I tend not to post about non gameplay stuff much though since it's not my area of expertise, so I often can't contribute anything that useful.

its good to know that who designs the champions not only cares about them being mechanically correct but also thematically. the context changes the gameplay.

anyway good luck with your work and the rest of the team

TNHA Baritone1 votes

With all this change having the potential of happening who exactly is the person I should be looking for when talking about thematic components of a champion?

What Karma's rework missed out on :)

Melledoneus1 votes

There's isn't much to be talked about.

Riot stated that they aren't satisfied with how Karma works right now and don't have the available resources to work on her. But it's a project they're looking forward to get started on and get over with because of how band-aided Karma is at the moment.

TNHA Baritone1 votes

I just like dropping reminders and hints :)

Melledoneus1 votes

Well, then, by all means. I'm not shaming you for doing so.

But I was just saying that just in case you were asking Morello about it and didn't see that post earlier.

Whoops lol.

Kind of hard to re-read that when I'm typing on my phone.

Since were on the topic of champion design, why do Syndras orbs that float around her act like entities and block your movement and pathing sometimes? It`s annoying to get ganked and have the orbs randomly make me move side to side and get killed when I could have gotten away otherwise :L

Melledoneus4 votes

They don't. They're extraneous special effects that serve no gameplay purpose when they are floating beside her.

Spôôked1 votes

Strange. Sometimes I get blocked by them when I`m trying to walk

Melledoneus1 votes

It could have been minions, lag, or even a rare bug where auto-pathing makes stupid redirections for no reason.

Either that, or you came to complain about a non-existent issue.

Spôôked1 votes

It might be a bug, but I don`t know :L all I know is it happens to me frequently when I play Syndra

yeulx1 votes

hey meddler has there been any plans talked about for anything like special events again? like i dont remember exactly but along time ago there was the noxus vs ionian? game that decided like what would be put in at the time thus we got the cdr boots

Is there any massive reason you've chosen to do more champions not associated with any faction recently? ( Bard Kindred TahmKench ) They seem to be less canon to lore and just kind of "there" in a sense. (There were no major lore events including any of those champions (yet))

Some desire to flesh out the world a bit more - acknowledge that some characters aren't particularly part of a group, or aren't part of day to day life, or don't have as normal a set of motivations etc.

Just wanted to say I love playing Shen because he ''looks cool'' like his whole theme is really a pretty cool theme you'd find in like a fighting anime. Just a bad ass guy.

I think Riot should consider making more champions that are just ''cool'' or ''badass'' Like yeah i think yasuo is riots biggest mistake because he has an extremely toxic and unfair kit that both teams need to deal with, But he is really pretty sweet, The voice, looks, skills, sword everything.

If you understand what i mean ? haha

OyddAWqJ5r3 votes

Shen is alot more than just cool. He takes neither the side of good nor evil, simply justice. He's a cold-hearted deliverant of justice.

His encounter with Jhin made him this way. Jhin's art twisted Shen from the lighthearted person he once was into the emotionless warrior he is now. Plus afterwards his longtime friend and fellow disciple Zed, who was also twisted by Jhin's art and Shen's father's decision to spare him, killed Shen's father and then pursued forbidden techniques.

So really he's not just a cool guy at all. He's pychologically scarred in many ways and he's fed up with the world after seeing so much injustice. So now he simply wants to rid the world of injustice via killing everyone who he perceives to be "evil".

Akali's and Kennen's views on the matter are unknown but they are known to assist him.

May I ask what ever happened to the Tahm, Bard, and Rek'Sai lores that were supposed to be released? I remember a Rioter awhile back saying they were going to be released "soon", but I don't remember ever seeing them.

Jeddy0171 votes

Meddler isn't the right person to ask that. Remember, he's a part of the gameplay team; so he would probably not know the details of what happened to those champs' long lore.

Raid Boss Morde1 votes

Yeah, I thought so. There was just a possibility that he might have been able to ask another Rioter about, but it's fine.

Hey Meddler a little curious if you would indulge me, have you guys given much thought to Morgana and Kayle when it comes to their place on Runeterra? Is there active work to bring everyone back in realm lorewise?

RiotMeddler2 votes

I know there's a desire to do stuff with their backstory, not sure what direction's being considered or how updating them's prioritized versus other narrative updates though sorry.

If every champion that comes out is a special snowflake, at least in terms of god/celestial/demon/special unaffiliated character, then it detracts from the interest that should inspire.

"Oh look, another immortal god-thing on the rift. Yawn."

That's just my opinion, though.

Shadowkirby141 votes

Kindred is pretty much Runeterra's version of the Grim Reaper, so they don't actually need a faction.

Bard is a babysitter to Runeterra, arrives in time to stop people from fucking anything up. He's there to preserve a certain balance upon the world, to keep things in motion. For example; if Bard saves a person it's not because he wants to, he saved that person because he either has an important destiny to fulfill in the future or is going to have a child that will benefit the world.

Tahm Kench is a representation of mankind's flaws. He doesn't need a faction because he has no desire to, all he wants is to feast upon anything that peaks his specific tastes depending on a person's flaws. His appearance, personality, and even his name changes with every victim from any culture. The reason he's sided in Bilgewater is because the Gambler, who is named Tahm Kench, is from Bilgewater, and that's where this demon went.

Swain again? Is Swain the new Ryze? Someone either useless or overpowered in the states you put him in.

MrBuffington5 votes

Swain was always looking at a full rework; he wasn't part of the main 6, and I remember someone way back when (probably Meddler) saying that he might not even be in the mage update since he needed more work than what they could do in a roster update.

RiotMeddler12 votes

Yep. The mid-season changes to Swain were very much a case of 'we know this guy needs big changes, but those are a long way off so here are some things we think are worth exploring in the meantime'.

darkdill3 votes

I'm of the opinion that Demacia's in need of a "dark knight"-type character (and no, I don't mean Vayne). Something that could invoke a "Dark Is Not Evil" trope to an extent.

Shameless concept advertising: Celes, the Dark Crusader

so you finally decided that you gonna make

  • Noxian Rebel-Hero that opposes Noxian forces and wants to stop the war
  • Demacian Lunatic that wants to exterminate everything on sight and probably has some sort of obsession with Noxus or Dark Forces?

As far as I remember you used to say

  • Demacia are not always gonna be the heroes
  • Noxus are not always gonna be the villains

Or you changed your minds? Maybe I missed something in the Lore?

We've had relaunched Demacians and Noxians, though: Sion Taric Poppy.

Taric was retconned a Demacian and Poppy had an update last year/earlier this year (can't remember the time frame).

But yeah, DEMACIAAAA plz.

I would love to see a champion that is born from a noxian mom and a demacian dad or the other way around.

Garen XKatarina

Elikain2 votes

The big ol' TahmKench has specific quotes towarrds Garen and Katarina and their suggested relationship.

His taunt towards Garen: "You live by a code that'll never let you get what you want. Let me take you to her.", is a nod to Garen and Katarina's forbidden relationship. His taunt towards Katarina is a similar reference: "Don't starve your heart, child! Let me deliver you to him."

#This is something i adore about this OSFrog guy.

I for one would love a Noxian Battle priest or priestess champ. Long flowing gold white and red robes, and abilities that both heal and hurt, i would love to see it. [slayer-pantheon-rainbows]

bloodmoth2 votes

I think that would fit in with noxus really well

bloodmoth1 votes

We dont need any more champs from those factions for a wee while longer, they are WAY over represented in game, the long hiatus has been good for building the world around them and making it feel alot more expansive.

They are best suited to updating them.

When they do finally bring something from those factions, id love to see a noxus vs demacia event to really solidify their stories and provide insight into how each faction functions

A Liberal2 votes

I agree, with all the myth champs we've been getting a sense of the universe of leayge, not just the constant fighting in runeterra

bloodmoth1 votes

Personally im a little iffy on the mythological champs, they seem to be really diverse and quite random, would be nice to understand how they all fit together, like if there is some pantheon that kindred, bard, tahm kench and soraka or whatever are all part of.

I personally find it hard to understand how they all fit together, lots just feel more like they are their own thing unrelated to the others, which makes it all feel more disjointed than cohesive, though its early days, something big could be in the works and introducing them all separately could provide a bigger moment when they tie them together than otherwise

We'd have more champions from place X,Y, or Z if riot would increase their production rate a little. IMO they aren't making enough champs to return to any particular area as soon as we'd like them too.
