40 ==> 50 AP

75% ==> 100% base damage

It's on PBE. And it's fine for junglers. It's just the meta which hasn't turned yet into League of AP. Wait 5.13.

And IMO Ez Smite mid has good damages but that's all. He's incredibly squishy and easy to make useless.

its almost as if,

we can start building lichbane and get more out of our gold purchases instead of Runeglaive!

Still on most junglers wouldnt an Iceborne be better in that it deals similar aoe damage and brings damage mitigation, mana, and an aoe slow to the table? When I think about playing maoki which would be better, glaive and sunfire or cinderhulk and iceborn?

Zair Umbras5 votes

I don't understand why people always bring up Iceborne. It doesn't deal any where near as much damage as a Runeglaive since Runeglaive has an AP ratio instead of just a base AD ratio AND it does physical damage, so it's mitigated by base armors far more than a Runeglaive since Rune does pure magic, even going as far as to change THE ENTIRE ATTACK into magic, which is why AP Ez is loving it. That 200ish base phys damage because MAGICAL and does AOE. That also applies to Fizz's Q, turning it into pure magic, and of course the trolly build of AP GP also gets his Q completely magic damage.

I don't understand how people are failing to realize just how powerful this item is. o.o It's scary good and synergizes with all the AP junglers except for Fiddle.

As for Mao, you always get Cinder. You wouldn't ever get the AP item. 0.o A Mao with Cinder is way better than Magus and a Runeglaive isn't all that great for him. Better off with as tanky items as it gets. This new item is for Jungle CARRIES like Diana and Fizz and even Ekko.

NorthernDruid3 votes

People are comparing it to iceborn, because iceborn offers similar damage output when at low AP. Offers not that much less AP, twice as much mana. An AoE slow. And a nice bit of armor.

Runeglaive is kind of awkward when compared to it because it gives no defensive stats, as lackluster offensive stats, and doesn't offer the slow.

The only things it offers which iceborn doesn't, is mana regen and AP scaling.

And the AP scaling can't measure up to lichbane.

I think it's looking really good with the changes on the PBE really. upping the base AD% to 100% helps a bit with the early game.

I still feel like 60 AP is a minimum of what it should have, just to compete with warrior. But even so it's looking a lot better.

Zair Umbras1 votes

30 AP is negligible really, especially if you make your 2nd item a big AP item like a Rabadon's, Zhonya's, or Luden's. You only lose out on 30 AP, but you get a bigger base damage, plus your ENTIRE attack is turned into magic, which means the actual AA you used to get off the bonus damage is turned into magic.

Compared to an Iceborne that only gives 125% of your base AD as AoE when this gives 100% plus 30% of your AP? If you're at max, you prolly have 100 AD, so to get it to equal about 25 damage with just the AP ratio to make it do more would be about 84ish AP. 30% of 84 is 25.2, which you usually have when you finish this item if you have the usual rune set up for AP carries. Damage-wise, Iceborne won't ever compare and it's not meant to. It's meant to be a slow and tankiness, not damage output.

NorthernDruid6 votes

As I said. I think the buffs on the PBE makes it look more appealing as it's own item.

In the phase where you only have one full item it's very much comparable to iceborn.

My initial criticism of the item was that champions who want lichbane gets a weaker lichbane with half the AP and no movespeed. While champions who want Iceborn get none of the tankiness and utility(slow) and are now more dependent on stacking AP.

Buffing the base AD ratio helps seperating it from both lichbane and iceborn. (since it's now a lot easier to make it outdo iceborn in damage, and the improved base ratio makes makes it stand out more from lichbane in the early game before you stack a lot of AP.

I still think it needs 10 more AP (or 5% more CDR, because I think the game could use more 5/15% CDR items) than what is on the PBE to be fully competitive as a source of AP.

Zair Umbras2 votes

See, that's the thing. Currently on the PBE, it sits as a wonderful item with a lot of potential and does incredibly. If they buff it anymore than what it is, then why wouldn't people just take smite mid for it like Diana? She has to jump into an enemy team anyways, so why not snag up the smite? Same could really go for Akali who scales incredibly well with a Sheen. Sheen and the smite at level 6 would mean she'd be able to all in them instantly just like a Diana could because extra damage off Challenging smite, reduced damage from their opponent who's only option to face these monsters is to burst them unless they've got an escape. Same could be said about Fizz since his Q does PHYSICAL damage with an AP ratio. This turns his Q into magical and considering he has to AA, the challenging smite works too good with his kit. He doesn't usually need an offensive summoner to kill some one at level 6, he only needs his Lichbane and to land his R. This gives him a cheaper Lichbane and a much shorter CD ignite with more base damage, skyrocketing his early game and snowballing him ungodly well.

Do we REALLY want to see a Fizz get to 6 with a Runeglaive and be raping everything like he used to? D:

That's just not true. The runeglaive currently on live does 175%(100% for your auto + 75% bonus) of your base AD and 30% of your AP. Even if we're talking about lvl 6-9 where your base AD is around 80 it will still do over 100 damage from the AD portion alone. Considering you're very likely to have some AP aside from runeglaive with runes/masteries or a doran's you're looking at around 70-80 AP so the total damage will be 164.

And it synergises very well with Luden's since it will proc spell effects.

the clearing is not strong at all early game and by mid to late if you had completely ignored it and built a real ap item then you will be able to clear anyways. Lichbane gives 30 more AP and a 20% higher ratio, but it's single target. Rune is 30% ratio with a 100% base AD ratio that turns the ENTIRE attack, that means an Ez's Q and Fizz's Q, into Magic Damage rather than dealing physical. It also synergizes well with Diana's kit, making her AoE-loving kit do lots more AoE while also making her AA do lots of damage.

I'll even compare it for you. Say you have 500 AP with this item and 530 with the Lichbane.

500 AP on this item makes your next AA do around 100 base damage which is now magic, another 100 because of its ratio, and 30% of your AP, so that's 100+100+150, so 350. Lichbane does 75% of your base AD and 50% of your AP, so that's 100 base PHYSICAL, 75 Magic, and 265 magic, totaling 340 magic and 100 physical. That's just for a standard AA though. There's about a 90 damage difference prior to resistances. Most have about 80ish MR and about 100 Armor, but say you have a void, so you ignore 40% of their MR.

We're at 48 MR and 100 armor. 100 armor is 50% reduction. Formula is MR/(MR+100). You likely have another 23 MPen. 8 from runes, 15 from boots. So that's 25 MR left. 25 MR is 20% reduction. That means the Rune will do about 280. The Lich would do 50 physical and 272 magical. That means there's about a 42 damage difference on your average carry. Literally 42. That's almost negligible. lol.

Say we want to use a tank though! That's about 200 armor and 100 MR, pretty standard stuff. 200 Armor is about 67% reduction. 100 MR is 50%, however we ignore 40% of it and another 23, bringing us down to 37. (100-40% is 60, minus 23 is 37). 37 MR is about 27% reduction. So Rune does 255.5 damage. Lich does 33 physical and 248.2 damage. That means the difference is 25.7 damage.

Needless to say, the more armor there is on a target, including if they grab a Zhonya's, the less the difference between a Lich and a Rune becomes because of the initial damage being converted into magical.

All this math is done with the upgraded Runeglaive that has a 100% base AD ratio and 50 AP, up from 40.

Khell DarkWolf10 votes

Your math is completely off.

It doesn't add a base damage, it works off of the champions "base physical attack + 30% of your AP".

The only items that add a base amount of damage are Nashor's Tooth (which has a scaling) and Wits End.

Nashor's Tooth: http://leagueoflegends.wikia.com/wiki/Nashor%27s_Tooth Wits End: http://leagueoflegends.wikia.com/wiki/Wits_End

lets take your Example but we'll use a level 18 Diana Diana JUST to compare:

Diana: http://leagueoflegends.wikia.com/wiki/Diana Runeglaive: http://leagueoflegends.wikia.com/wiki/Runeglaive Lich Bane: http://leagueoflegends.wikia.com/wiki/Lichbane

level 18 Diana with 104 base AD and 500 AP.

With Runeglaive:

100% of physical base damage of 104 = 104. 30% of 500 AP = 150

[104 physical base + 150 Magic damage] = 254 Magic damage on next autoattack

With Lich Bane:

75% of physical base damage of 104 = 78 50% of 500 AP = 250 Magic damage

[78 physical base + 250 magic damage] = 328 magic damage on next autoattack

With that, thats a difference of 74 damage.

While Runeglaive is AoE, Lich Bane scales so much harder if you're stacking more AP to make use it. Whats the ball park of high end amounts of AP?

600?

800?

The Governer4 votes

Not sure if I misunderstand you, but are you implying that only the "bonus" magic damage mentioned in the tooltips of Spellblade unique passive of both items will be dealt as the damage when you auto attack after using an ability (or when you use an ability that applies on-hit effects)?

Because that's obviously not what the tooltips are telling us. If you read carefully:

Lich Bane: After using an ability, your next basic attack deals 75% base AD (+ 50% AP) BONUS magic damage. 1.5 second cooldown.

Runeglaive: After using an ability, your next basic attack is converted to deal magic damage PLUS 75% base AD (+30% AP) BONUS damage in an area around the target. Applies spell effects. (1.5 second cooldown).

Let's use Ezreal as an example and illustration shall we?

Level 18 Ezreal has 101 base Attack Damage. Let's say he has 650 Ability Power, and he does not build any items/runes/masteries that gives him more base Attack Damage/bonus Attack Damage, so his total Attack Damage remains 101.

With Runeglaive:

His Q's component = 115 + 101 x 110% + 650 x 40% = 486.1

Plus

Spellblade passive bonus Magic Damage = 101 x 75% + 650 x 30% = 270.75

So the total Magic Damage he deals upon using Q = 486.1 + 210.75 = 786.85

Not to mention since Runeglaive's unique passive activates spell effects, Luden's Echo's unique passive will be proced too, assuming he has Luden's Echo and Luden's Echo is at full charge, but let's not talk about the numbers on Luden's Echo's unique passive, for simplicity's sake. Also with Runeglaive, Ezreal's Q is completely converted into magic damage which synergizes well with any magic penetration runes/masteries/items (if any) you have applied on Ezreal. It works extremely well with Abyssal Sceptor (Not a very nice item on Ezreal since almost all of his abilities revolves around ranged pokes) /Void Staff.

With Lich Bane:

his Q component = 486.1

Plus

Spellblade passive bonus Magic Damage = 101 x 75% + 650 x 50% = 400.75

Total = 486.1 (Physical Damage from Ezreal's Q) + 400.75 (Magic Damage component from Spellblade passive) = 886.85

Ezreal's Q is Physical Damage component, so it doesn't benefit from magic penetration. Granted that it deals more damage (130 more damage) in total, but half of the damage is Physical Damage (which doesn't do much for AP Ezreal), and the other half is Magic Damage. Moreover, Ezreal's Q does not proc Luden's Echo's unique passive since it isn't treated as a spell. It only procs on-hit effects like Spellblade.

Conclusion (TL;DR): Both builds have their advantages and disadvantages. Just because Runeglaive doesn't deal as much damage in total does not mean it's a bad idea to build it on AP Ezreal.

Sorry again for misunderstandings if I misunderstand your post. But the the above conclusion remains.

EDIT: I totally forgot to mention that most AP Runeglaive Ezreal players build Skirmisher's Sabre, thus making their smite Challenging Smite. This is important because it makes every basic attack and his Qs proc extra true damage on the Smited enemy champions. I don't need to go through the numbers right?

Zair Umbras5 votes

See, this guy understands. When you auto attack, you do hit with your physical damage AA with the other bits as BONUS. Runeglaive turns the ENTIRE attack, including the initial AA, into magic.

ChaoticPinecone3 votes

I see a lot of benefit for AP ezreal and AP gangplank, who have a physical ability that counts as a basic attack youd like to turn into magic damage. But how does it help AP junglers?

Runeglave turns 75% of your AD + 30% of your AP into magic damage. Lich bane adds 75% of your AD + 50% of your AP on top of your basic autoattack damage. For most AP junglers, Lich bane is still better.

Yeah, Runeglaive is great on specifically, and almost entirely, on Diana, but that is pretty much who uses it the most, and can benefit from it the most outside of Eve, compared to the old AP item. The other actual junglers that are ap don't really benefit from it as well as they did the old version, which is what bothers people.

Sure, it is cute and all that Ezreal can use it, but that sort of isn't the point of the item, and if anything is going to get it nerfed if people start using it on him, hence why Cinderhulk got nerfed most recent with all the top laners taking it.

Same reason the old (pre-the new summoner's rift jungle items) jungle item got nerfed with Ez using it too much (not just Ez but he was the main offender).

If part of your argument is, non-junglers can use it and do good, that is a terrible argument, and only further points out why it isn't a good item, because it is not only worse on previous AP junglers, it actually lowers the amount of viable AP junglers (which one of the Rioters flat out said that exact thing on the most recent patch rundown).

Pretty sure an item that makes LESS champions viable in the jungler and causes MORE non-junglers to use it in lane...is bad.

Messaiga1 votes

Thing is.... how many remotely popular AP Junglers (talking about non-tanks even if a few tanks scale well with AP) are there? Nidalee Diana Fiddlesticks Ekko Elise Evelynn These champions mostly come to mind. Two of them don't do well with Runeglaive (Fiddle can rush Zhonyas and most Elise's opt for Cinderhulk because of her awful damage scaling anyway). Then there's some other picks that exist but aren't really played often at all like Akali Karthus Kassadin. Once again, only one of these champions can't make great use of Runeglaive. Then there's AP Shaco , but I imagine he'd do fine with Runeglaive. Essentially there are very few junglers that did not benefit from the switch to Runeglaive, and those champions have ways to circumvent it anyway.

Su1c1de3 votes

I think the point is that each of the champs that benefit from glaive benefit far more from lich bane. Also they did t have to remove the old magus which benefits plenty of ap jungler, both could exist.

Mandang04 votes

The bigger problem is that rushing either item is a bad idea, which is fine for Lich Bane users - they just finish it later. Runeglaive doesn't have that choice, as the enchantment is meant to catch the jungler back up from the gold spent on PvE stats.

MohawkBird3 votes

Runeglaive is still going to be awful as long as it is stopping AP junglers from building Lich Bane. All they had to do was add mana sustain to Magus and maybe shave of 10% CDR and the problem would've been solved.

Runeglaive is still going to be awful as long as it is stopping AP junglers from building Lich Bane.

Just like Cinderhulk is going to be awful as long as it stops tank junglers from building Sunfire.

MohawkBird4 votes

Except that fact that the passive on Cinderhulk is way stronger than the passive on Sunfire. Not to mention the fact that Randuin's is superior to Sunfire Cape as an Armor+HP item in almost every way as well. The passive on Lich Bane also offers way more burst and AP than Runeglaive could ever offer, which most AP junglers relied on, like Nidalee and Diana.

Partholonian1 votes

The passive on Lichbane doesn't offer any AP. AP is a stat that can come from tons of items. Like the one you are building now that you don't need to buy lichbane because it's built into your jungle item.

That was the point of the cinderhulk analogy. YOU CAN BUILD SOMETHING ELSE NOW.

MohawkBird4 votes

What you don't get is that Cinderhulk and Sunfire Cape are two completely different items. Lich Bane offers double the ability power, more mana, and a better Spellblade considering that most of the AP junglers that use it are assassins. Just imagine is Sunfire Cape offered a bonus 35% HP and more health instead of the usual 25% that Cinderhulk gives, and the percentages don't stack. That basically sums up Runeglaive compared to the other items with the same passive. It is mediocre in almost every way, but since we are a jungler we are pretty much force to build a jungle item, even if it is the worst alternative. That's how AP junglers feel right now. There are way better spellblades than Runeglaive.

^this.

And I just confirmed on a test run in a custom game.

Runeglaive DOES convert all damage from physical on-hit abilities into all magic damage.

I then proceeded to test why, so I grabbed a Luden's echo.

Each Ezreal Q did proc luden's when fully charged.

I removed Luden's and then added Will of the ancients.

Got a tower to bring me down to half HP and then attacked the scuttler crab. Turns out it spell vamps off of the Q with Runeglaive.

Then I grabbed liandry's torment...

...Found out it works with Ezreal Q as well with Runeglaive.

I did the same thing with a lichbane to make sure it wasn't an error in misjudging what Ezreal Q does (for redundancy).

Turns out Runeglaive converts that autoattack on-hit ability (Ezreal Q) into a spell effect. and Lich bane does not do that which is still treated as an actual on-hit modifier.

My bets are the coding was done wrong and is actually a bug which translate to, Not intended.

P.S.

I also learned Luden's Echo will proc off of smite. Learn something new everyday.

I never said cinderhulk was bad, nor did I say it was bad that non-junglers played it, because given how pro top laners played, with thier early taking camps and so on and so forth, it made sense, and it worked.

Cinderhulk in general was just sort of strong, but it wasn't problematic. The problem, and what my point was, having an item that is better on someone out of the jungle, compared to a lot of junglers, is bad.

Fiddle worked fine with Magus, but he rarely auto attacks in the jungle, because you rarely, if ever aren't draining or some such to have time to auto, so it mostly just nerfed him with less ap.

The problem I have with Ez using it specifically, is because we have already seen a case where a good jungle item was picked up on Ez, then nerfed pretty roughly (the old map and jungle items) and then it was bad on everyone.

When items are picked up on people Riot doesn't want them picked up on, it rarely, if ever, ends good.

We can go all the way back to Heart of Gold, which was mainly meant to be a way for junglers to get passive gold and some health (there weren't as many easy ways for health then in comparison, outside of a few cases). Just about every laner started taking Heart of Gold, what happened? Riot straight up deleted it from the game so no one could use it, which hurt jungler gold income for a bit.

An jungle item being good, not on a jungler, but a laner, is bad in my opinion. Riot still, somehow, hasn't learn how to balance an item to be attractive to junglers and not laners, and it ends up the items are attractive for laners and not junglers.

I don't get how they still haven't figured it out for as many times as it has happened, especially with Ezreal.

Mandang05 votes

Well, this time the interactions are a bit screwy and I wouldn't be surprised if they get cleaned up. Heart of Gold was obvious - you can get the same gp10 the support gets and build your favorite stat while doing so to snowball your lane. Runeglaive's conversion of next on-hit applying spell to entirely magic damage is a bit of a surprise, but converting a skill that normally doesn't read as a spell to one that does simply because it changes damage type: that's ridiculous. If Ez's Q works with on-hits in order to apply runeglaive in the first place, then it shouldn't work with Luden's - it needs to be one or the other.

In any case, I still think the bigger problem is that runeglaive sucks in the jungle. Whether people can use it outside of the jungle seems to come into play after that.

If Ez's Q works with on-hits in order to apply runeglaive in the first place, then it shouldn't work with Luden's - it needs to be one or the other.

I'm not arguing your point that it is a bit of an odd interaction, my whole point is, sure it works great with Ez, and certain ap items he will get, but it doesn't work with a lot of ap centric junglers.

I don't care what it DOES with Ez, I care what it DOESN'T do with junglers.

Unless Ez jungle suddenly becomes a thing (which it won't given how Riot changed ranged leashing like a-holes), then I don't like Ez using it when, especially successfully, because it is only going to highlight the fact that it can be taken out of the jungle really well, and riot doesn't like that, which means Riot will nerf it...which will make it even worse in the jungle...and so on and so forth.

OK, this was my whole point.

Riot's logic for diversity: "Let's add an item that buffs 'specific' AP fighters and remove the one which is essential for all AP casters!"

trailblazer smite diana with runeglaive has over a 59% winrate right now.

people are really not seeing the value in mana sustain for junglers for some reason. throwing all these damage numbers out and ignoring the fact it gives back mana so that you arent screwed if you gift your blue buff anymore.

Skarner can use it too

He needs cinderhulk a lot more, though.

Diana wants it, Eve wants it; Nidalee's cougar form wants it. Some champs want it less, but overall I like the concept. and its getting buffed on PBE.

Evelynn doesnt want it.

AD Eve doesn't want it. Hybrid Eve may or may not want it. AP Eve, however, does want it.

Then if she (as AP) gets fed off her ass she can sell it late-game and grab Lich Bane in its place if she'd prefer that instead for more damage one target, at the cost of having less synergy with her magic pen items.

Eve, Diana, and Nidalee get advantages from the Runeglaive. Tho anyone who's not diving in to get autos (Fiddlesticks, Amumu, Gragas, Cho'Gath) did better with Magus as an offensive option. The issue that item had is that it had stat inefficiencies and it didn't have a good mana restoration element. With that item removed they're just building Cinderhulk or not jungling so I guess that somehow means more diversity in Riot's eyes.

No. Eve does NOT get an advantage from using this item. This item is several times weaker than Trinity, and takes away her warrior enchantment. Eve is hybrid, not ap. This item is in all a mistake, hopefully the PBE changes make it viable for some junglers. Even then Trinity has the best spelblade effect. the only item I would change is the maybe the new sated devourer in combination with Bork. Either way this item is garbage for most junglers.

All the best eve's I've seen built cinderhulk and went with a tanky bruiser build for that very reason :)

Just wanna say I dont like the new Runeglaive on Nidalee the 80 AP and 20% gave a great early potential, with the new one the potentiel of being an assassin jungler is gone, I can't build item 3100 nor item 3025 I gotta opt for a 40 ap item that falls late game especially on Nidalee . It is quicker and easier to clear plus de mana sustain is helpful but as an assasin champion, Magus was more beneficial.
