So, an ability with a completely unrelated passive.

On one hand we'be abilities with related passives: like Garen's W. It's a defensive shield. Upon activation it increases his bulk. What's it's passive? It's a passive that leverages the effectivity of purchased bulk. It's related to it's primary function.

One the other hand we've unrelated passives. The best example might be Zed's W. Derp, hello I'm Zed's W. I'm a gapcloser, a shadow that can swap places. Oh, I also setup magical energy restoration. Ow wait, what does a gapcloser totally have to to do? Increase the damage of all abilities and attacks, derp! What does it have to do with each other? A shadow that somehow increases the main characters physical strength????

Seriously, this is just horrible design. It just stinks like somebody wanted to add free stats and additional power but didn't know where to put it.

It's not necessarily 100% horrible, but I agree it's kinda weird. Pantheon's Crit passive might as well be part of his Innate. Zed's W, Rek'Sai's Ult and similar effects are the worst offenders though.

If it were part of Pantheon's innate he'd have the most obnoxious level 1 in the game.

No he wouldn't. What's he going to do to get you to under 15% at level 1?

And by the time he's cast that many hes level 3 lol.

Nah, maybe level 2 if he's doing some farming in between. Don't underestimate a 65 damage shot every 4 seconds.

And a Level 1 Riven all in hits even harder lol. This would take like 20 seconds to actually happen.

Rek'sai kind of needs something else on her ultimate though. Her tunnels are overall easy to dispose of, so she needs something else. Zed W is weird though.

Lol it needs something else? Have you ever looked at Rek'Sai's kit? It's crazy overloaded.

It's actually to help cap his power early game. If he didn't have that +25% AD bonus his Q+E+R would have higher ratios. What they SHOULD have done was have it read: "Zed's Razor Shuriken and Shadow Slash deal an additional 25% damage."

On paper it may not sound right

But in game it makes 100% complete sense The only thing that may be off is the energy restore, but all energy champions have one way to restore it and thats just where zed got his

Or how about Kalista's W? Sentinel: active, create a moving ward. Passive: deal tons of extra damage to enemies if your Oathsworn attacks. Why? Because uh... something to do with sentinels. Or how about Thresh's E. Active: move enemies in a line towards cast. Passive: your attacks charge and deal up to 200% AD plus souls in bonus damage on hit.

These are the worst two, in my opinion... at least as far as "what does the active have to do with passive?" is concerned.

Kalista getting a strong passive on her vision tool was all a plot to make Ashe jealous.

hello I'm Zed's W. I'm a gapcloser, a shadow that can swap places.

Except that isn't all it does. It duplicates his spells. That's a very important main function Given that energy characters always have an energy restoration mechanism, having his attached to the double hit mechanic makes perfect sense.

As for the extra AD passive, that's just necessary to not make his level-scaling completely fucked. He gets a bit of cooldown reduction and energy efficiency from it, but neither is enough to actually give the ability any kind of decent scaling, and there aren't any other good options for what to give him. He'd be an assassin who didn't get any damage benefit from leveling one of his abilities. That completely messes with his power curve. You'd either have to make his bases absolutely stupidly high, or you'd have to give him huge scaling ratios. Neither are great situations for assassins (If you've ever been pissed off at how easily Akali snowballs in the midgame or how goddamn useless she can become late game, then you'll understand, and she at least has her passive evening her out at least a little). This option allows him to have a flatter power curve.

Gnar ult ranks now increase the amount of time that his Q's CD gets refreshed. Even the patch notes said "this thematically makes no sense" or something along those lines.
