Is the support bot meta a good thing?

I think its a cool role. Sure. But it might lead to better balance if we get rid of the duo lane meta. I dont think support will entirely go away. Lulu mid is good. Ori is that kind of midlaner. You could make soraka into a midlaner. When I see that midlane support type champion in the lcs I usually watch because its such an interesting game usually. Very different.

On the other hand, there are a couple of supports I will miss seeing. Wait. Only thresh. Ill only ever miss seeing thresh in bot lane. Forget jana. Forget soraka supoprt. Hate blitzcrank. Leona and Naut are really really hateful, even if I do have the option of taking cleanse (which I should be doing more often and would do more often if the spell was cooler). Omg 3 second morg root. Yay. SO fun.

Im probably exaggerating a little bit. It is fun at times because of the challenge of laning with 3 other ppl. But its not fun because it makes the game WORK. Its fun because its hard and its different. But the cost of not getting a blue trinket util 2-4 minutes later than a solo laner would is crippling at times. Being at lower hp when zed is getting fed is crippling frequently. Its a bit frustrating to deal with an overly aggressive enemy support when your own support is failing or struggling and your jg is absentee. Those arent things you can always deal with yourself. Yes u can do a better job than i sometimes do, but does the support meta add so much to the game that we should insist on keeping it? Some ppl like to play support characters, would they be less happy living that fantasy in a solo mid support role? It seems like they would like that. And as an adc, I would like to have lvl parity and an earlier blue trinket.

Where else would you put the fifth player?

If you put them top, you cede dragon control. If you put them mid, your mid-laner, probably your AP damage source, will be underfarmed and underleveled due to having to share. If you put them in the jungle, there's not enough farm for them both.

you would remove the fifth player. Three solo lanes and a jg.

Its also conceivable that the jungle gets reworked again and duo jg is possible. Small camps can be frequently spawning and farmable. The buff camps can become even harder to take town and will require the cooperation of both jglers. I REALLY like this idea, but with the new draft I dont see it happening.

I know right. It sort of makes me feel like the support meta is toxic because you cant move away from it. Check out my duo jg thread. I think it could actually overcome. If you have a duo lane, then you have one gold starved character on the map because its the support. If you put an ally into a duo lane, but dont give him a partner, then that person will also be gold starved because he is zoned.

But thats equal to having a support. Both teams have one gold starved person and everything is on par, but the duo jungle team has better map control and also has the advantage of those buffs on both sides of the jg.

Kindred can provide dps. Quin is a jungle now. You dont have to deprive yourself of an adc anymore if you allow your bot laner to be screwed from the start. Its something.

Having only the minimum number of players to cover each lane creates for a very static game. The opportunity cost for leaving your lane to roam is lost experience and gold for your team, lost vision as the enemy pushes your wave, and eventually tower damage.

That'd remove a lot of diversity from the game, not to mention several champions who work significantly better in a duo lane than a solo lane. Take Morgana. She has that epic snare, but no way to really take advantage of it on her own - Jungle would have to pretty much camp her lane to keep her useful. Why would you take her when you have someone like Orianna? Black Shield isn't worth giving up a lane for. Or Leona. Her passive would be useless without ganks from other lanes, and while she has a lot of stuns she doesn't have the damage you'd get from a tank like Shen or Rammus. It would be a great deal of work involved and would see a fundamental change to the game. Not sure a meta change is worth that.

You have a point. But I think morg needs to be reworked. Shes not interactive. She just has a rediculus snare, a bullshit zhonyas mechanic, waveclear, sustain (not the best mechanic in the game), and black shield. Check out my duo jg thread. Thats also a possibility.

As a side note, I want to try leona top with yi jungle. Shes just there for yi to gank her at lvl 4-6 and steal the kill. Basically, still a support, but its a bit sneeky because she is in a solo kill lane and is supporting for a jungle hypercarry rather than a bot lane hypercarry. I think if yi gets a kill from her lane then that would be a decent strat and an overall success. So dont underestimate solo lane supports. Do you want to deal with devourer shyvanna if she has a laner dedicated to spoon feeding her kills in the early game? Its scary.

Also, I didnt ask if removing the fifth player was a good thing. I asked if having a support was a good thing. You didnt address that.

Are you answerign the question, "is support bot meta a good thing" or are you not answering that question? Thats what the thread is about. The text in the body is just additional fodder for ppl to talk about. Real question concerns supports.
