Why isn't Alistar AD?

As in, why do his abilities scale with AP. It really makes no sense to me. And if having them scale with AD is a problem, why not have them scale with armor/mr or %HP.

Pretty sure Alistar was made in the era when most (if not all) abilities actually scaled on Ability Power.

This is the answer.

Ali was made back in the day when attacks scaled with attack damage and abilities scaled with ability power with very few exceptions.

Yeah, that's also the reason that Trist has no AD scalings even though she's most commonly used as an ADC.

I really wish Pulverize and headbutt turned into AD. :(

Cause all Tanks that are used in the support role are AP... as well as All other supports.

What is the reason for this?

That's just how they were built. I guess it's because they wanted there to be a bit of variety in damage in the due lane or something.

I agree, with his recent VU and Splash Art and likely coming lore change, I wondered why a raging Minotaur scaled with AP. As the others said, because of when he was made. However, it seems RIOT wants to keep him out of the jungle and top lane, and making him scale with AD would make him viable in those areas. He should be AD, especially since there are virtually no AD supports

No actual ad supports atleast jarvan can support just fine ;3

That's why I said virtually. There are a few AD champs that can support fairly well (Jarvan, GP, I've even seen Ashe), but the only one actually listed as a support is Gangplank, and typically if you pick GP support people will think you're trolling

Ashe has support as a secondary role.

I think thematically speaking, it would make more sense for his skills to AD scaling.

Then again, I thought the lore was now unrelated to the game. So, who knows?

Because when you give someone with high duration/powerful CC a reason to build AD things tend to turn...ugly. Just imagine a level three ult Alistar with 300 AD and a Hydra. And people thought Lee Sin was hard to kill...

Plus, just about every other single Tank in the game primarily uses AP as their main damage scaling. Amumu, Zac, Singed, etc.

The problem is that Riot nerfed Alistar way too hard in ages long past so building AP is near worthless on him now.
