Vayne Should have 500 Range instead of 550.

If her big counterplay is that she's so short ranged, why are the only champions that outrange her Varus Ashe Caitlyn (Jinx Tristana).

Vayne has "short range" because she has no abilities which allow her to affect enemies outside of her autoattack range.

Ashe WR Corki QR Caitlyn QR Draven ER Ezreal QWR Graves QR Jinx WR Kalista Q KogMaw QER Lucian QWR (Targeting a minion) MissFortune QR (Bounce Q off a minion) Quinn Q Sivir QW Urgot QE Varus QER

Tristana and Twitch are the only other ADCs who can't affect enemies outside of their autoattack range and both have abilities which can extend their autoattack range significantly.

The Pungulator3 votes

Is Tristana's E the same range as her auto attack? And what about her W? Haha, now that I mention is, what about her Ult??

ULTRAF0RCE4 votes

her e and r are designed to have the range increase as her level increaseses but yes her w does outrange her auto attacks

EndlessSorcerer10 votes

Her W also requires that you land on the target to hurt them, so you aren't really outside autoattack range anymore.

ULTRAF0RCE2 votes

yes but the w can hit an enemy when before that you were out of their range

EndlessSorcerer6 votes

That isn't really what we are talking about. When you land the ability, you are within autoattack range. It's the same way that Quinn's E wouldn't count as hitting a target from outside her autoattack range.

Rew7112 votes

Not saying it to be mean, but does her stun count as out of range? You can only stun if they hit a wall, which means if she fires from the end of the spells reach and is able to knock them back into a wall a little farther than her range, does that count?

Zastie1 votes

Everyone seems to be forgetting her passive too.

EndlessSorcerer9 votes

You mean the passive that helps you get in autoattack range, but doesn't actually do anything to let you affect people outside your autoattack range?

Funny how that didn't come up in a conversation about ability ranges.

Why yes, I do mean that passive. No need to be patronizing about it. I'm mentioning it because it helps you get closer. I realize it's not Trist's passive that gives range, but it does help with her range. Comparing one champion's single ability/stat with other's single ability/stat is pointless, you always need to look at the big picture of each champion, and how it works with their entire kit.

EndlessSorcerer4 votes

Yes, but this discussion was specifically against the OPs claim that Vayne wasn't short-ranged due to her autoattack range.

While her passive and Q help her get in range (especially when her ultimate is active), it doesn't change the fact that many ADCs have an effective range greater than Vayne, which makes her short-range by comparison.

Sorry if I was a bit patronizing, but it seemed to me that you brought up her passive movement speed when chasing enemies as an argument that Vayne wasn't, in fact, short ranged compared to other ADCs.

I run into people trying to change the point of the argument on the boards when they know they lost, so I probably mistakingly assumed that this was yet another attempt. My apologies.

(Probably gonna get down voted to hell for posting this in a Vayne thread and writing alot.) Breakdown on reasons that each champ has the range that they have:

I think that 500 might be a bit too harsh considering that she has 0 poke abilities, and relies entirely on her autos to deal damage. For example: Urgot, Lucian, Graves. These 3 ADCs (If you can call Urgot an ADC) all have shorter than 550 range for rather good reasons. Urgot: 425 range, Buff his auto range from 425 and you're gonna start seeing just how scary he is since he won't have to rely on Q as much. Lucian: 500 range, Very bursty with abilities that have moderate range to them (R has a good range, Q can be used to poke through minions). Graves: 525 range, Very reliant on his burst damage in order to destroy his opponents. Though he does have some poke with his buckshot and smoke, his ability to output very high quantities of burst damage is what made him 525.

Now let's look at the ADCs that were built for poke: Caitlyn, Varus, Ashe (Ashe and Varus both have above 550 range and have at least one ability with a great range that's very poke based): Caitlyn, though she has 650 range, doesn't have any attack speed steroids or damage buffs other than her every once in a while passive headshot. Caitlyn also has very long range poke abilities that focus much more on keeping the enemies from getting near her, and slowly taking down the enemies' healths, though for this, she lost her ability to be as strong as some of the lower ranged ADCs in a prolonged battle. Ashe: 600 range, Immensely powerful with her good ability to poke with her volley shot and lock down enemies in one area. Ashe has an attack speed steroid, a slow, a stun, and a scouting ability that all help her to dominate her opponents from her positioning. What's the down side? She lost all of her mobility to do this. She's immensely powerful but can be deleted more easily than a more mobile champion. This lack of mobility makes her much more vulnerable than Cait. Varus: 575 range, Very similar to Ashe in terms of abilities what with his poke, attack speed steroid, magic damage steroid, slow, and root. Varus lost some of his range in comparison to Ashe because of his ability to poke through minion waves much more easily since his his arrow can pierce straight through the enemies' minions and still hit the enemy. In contrast to Ashe, however, he has no instant stun ability to help him, but he has considerably higher possible damage output, and an ultimate that can root more than just one person. His balance is his entire lack of mobility as well.

Now, let's compare two of what I believe to be very similar champs except for very different points in the game: Draven and Vayne. (Though I can't say Draven falls off in the right hands, he tends to be noticeably less effective at destroying tanks late game if he cannot catch his axes.) Draven and Vayne are both heavy all-in ADCs that lack any forms of poke (Unless you really wish to call Draven's ultimate or his stand aside ability poke, he has NONE) They both have 550 range. They both thrive in a prolonged battle (Unless Draven drops his axes), and both of them have the ability to chase their opponents. Both champions are forced to all-in in order to fight since they lack the ability to poke their enemies down. Both have an ability that can move an enemy champion from their current position(which stuns temporarily), but one is a skillshot and can hit multiple targets while the other is single target, but can yield a longer stun. Both have insane damage outputs in duels. Two major differences between these two though: Draven sacrifices some of his dueling potential for burstiness with his ultimate and spinning axes(If you fail to catch), while Vayne sacrifies burstiness for massive sustained damage and outplaying abilities to fight against bursty champs (Stealth with ult + damage bonus). The next difference is that between the two, Draven is much easier to punish for each of his mistakes. Draven drops his axes, or puts one in a bad spot, and he's either lost that damage output bonus or he's getting dog piled by the enemy team. As for Vayne, her knockback is specific against one person, and her stealth can get her out of the majority of small positioning mistakes that she might make.

If you ask me, I feel like Vayne and Draven are practically the same style of champion. They both have oppressively strong all-in potential and damage outputs, however, with the proper comprehension on how to keep them and their teams from getting the hard engages that they want, these champions become much less of a threat. Poke champions tend to do well in taking down the health bars of these two champs, but they can still heal it back, right? Well, if you wish to actually be able to fight them better in teamfights and control their ability to thrive there, zone control oriented mages will have to be used. (Orianna, Annie, Anivivia, etcetera)

Yeah, the nerf on Lucian autoattack range didn't hurt him that much, since he has 3 abilities to get around his poor auto range (not to mention his dash). Doing this to Vayne might actually make her laning experience a little too miserable considering the likes of Caitlyn Ashe who outrange her autos and have ranged poke on top of it.

Knight SoIaire 2 votes

but notice one fact

vayne is meant to be a hypercarrry who is crappy early and hella strong late

now compare the sentence above with stuff that happens in game

vayne is actualy strong early ... her only weakness is that long ranged champions abuse her but then vayne has tools to outplay and catch them easily during early game... and even win vs her counterpicks ... snowball from early

vayne is made around the theoretical weakness that exists only on paper ... in game it isnt something rare to see vayne eating a caitlyn ... thats just how her kit works

while range nerf might be harsh ... if it is followed by correct buffs to either her passive or q she might be made what she was meant to be

right now vayne is much weaker than she should be late ... because her kit allows her to be stronger than she should be early

i think that this nerrf might hurt her ... but owerall raise her quality as a champion

AFK Push2 votes

yeah if vayne get's nerfed it shouldn't be her range, but maybe tumbles cd or her percent max health true damage gets nerfed (in the early levels).

Eh...i build it when im really far ahead, or when i want to couple it with some movement speed in my items and furor boots LOL but recently i've been building cleaver and frozen fist in situations where i find champions just running past my frontline just to dive me so i can kite them to hell and break thier armor.

Her big counterplay is that she has no mechanics to do anything past her autoattack range. All other AD carries have something that lets them do damage whenever they aren't autoattacking. They can make something happen from ranges longer than Vayne can, which is useful if a threat zones them out of a fight. Vayne doesn't need 500 range for low range to be her weakness. A nerf to 525 might work, but it also might not be the best option for a nerf if she needs one.

Yeah I hear that a lot, but most ADCs also don't spit in the face of counterplay this hard. Most,..

Point being, try to punish her early? Nope, too safe.

Trying to duel her to set her behind? Good luck.

Trying to escape? Really tough, due to Q, passive and so on.

Building tanky? A huge portion of it gets negated, and she scales off from your tankiness.

Playing safe to out-scale? She scales like a God.

You're forced to try to set her behind, but she can ignore your efforts a huge amount of the time. The resources required to keep her behind are comparable to a f***ing Nasus.

I'm not sure I'd call OP or not (Not trying to fence-sit here but I'm not familiar enough) but the design is certainly frustrating.

Sightless666 votes

Too safe? She has no ranged farming skill. She can only autoattack to get creeps. If you get ahead of her by poking her out or just bursting her down, then she can be completely zoned from farm. She can also be pushed in easily if you can't kill her, which lets you take the tower early and deny farm.. Ganking can be a bit difficult, but the low distance her Q takes her means that can be closed in on without too much trouble. She is not very safe in lane. She's one of the more unsafe carries.

The resources required to keep her behind are comparable to a f*ing Nasus.

No they aren't. That is a massive exaggeration. She's easier to set behind than most other AD carries. This is not such an unreasonable task as you present it.

Trying to duel her to set her behind? Good luck.

Sure, you don't duel her past level 6. So what? You don't have to duel her to set her behind. You can outfight her if you don't try to fight 1v1. She is not good in early skirmishes. Even in later teamfights, she's not just an unstoppable god. A zone control mage can force her to spend large amounts of a fight not attacking through threat of instant deletion, and CC champions can usually find good opportunities to lock her down given that she can't easily fight from outside their threat radius.

Building tanky? A huge portion of it gets negated, and she scales off from your tankiness.

People worry too much about this. She does the vast majority of her damage as physical. Build against that, and build attack speed slows to lower her true damage (these hurt her more than other carries because she does all of her damage with autoattacks and almost none with abilities).

She is strong right now. Arguably a bit too strong. A nerf might be justified, but just giving her a huge range reduction is not an effective solution.

kog with w on and twitch ulting also outrange her. You may also wanna put only adcs that outrange her. Lots of champions outrange vayne if you are gonna say all.

Oh yes, I know she can do a lot of damage but they said "one shot any squishy she clicks". Unless massively fed or late-game adc, thats not true. Sorry for enjoying a good laugh with massive exaggeration being the enjoyment. If you want massive one shot damage, give that to Jinx. +10% ad on rockets mate. Also Corki>Vayne.

Back to hating Vayne?

Never change boys, never change.

ProfDrDeath6 votes

While 500 might be a tad harsh, I was always of the opinion that she'd more balanceable with an a tad shorter AA range than average. 525 would also be good to try out, imo.

Squidblimp6 votes

You want to know know why? Here's why: Vayne basically only uses auto attacks and doesn't really have any ranged spells, only chasing and evasion potential. She doesn't have attack speed steroids either, and her only AD steroid is attached to her ultimate, which is on a fairly long cooldown compared to basic abilities.

Let's look at the other short-ranged ADCs and see what they have:

(1) Sivir has a long-ranged Boomerang to compensate, spellshield, and a huge move speed steroid. (2) Lucian has long ranged spells and a dash to compensate. (3) Graves has several long ranged spells and a high burst kit to compensate, and also a dash. (4) Twitch has a crazy long ranged ultimate that has the highest potential DPS in the game to compensate, and stealth. (5) Kalista has huge kiting potential to compensate. (6) Quinn has a blind for trading and lots of utility to compensate. (7) Draven has extremely high damage to compensate, and it's damage that isn't just in the late game like Vayne. He can snowball from the very beginning. (8) Ezreal has long-ranged spells to compensate. (9) Corki has long-ranged spells, burst, and physical, magical and true damage. (10) MF has long-ranged AOE spells with magic damage to compensate. (11) Urgot isn't an ADC, he's a top or mid laner IMO. Even so, he has long-ranged harass and DPS.

Sorry if I missed any, but as you can see, Vayne is the only 550-range-and-under ADC that doesn't have any long-ranged spells or some form of utility to compensate for her range. She just has damage and outplay potential, and all her damage is on her auto attacks. She's an all-in ADC. Poking isn't really so easy on Vayne.

ULTRAF0RCE1 votes

Ezreal actually has a higher potential dps via q then Twitch's ultimate due to the fact it can deal a lot of damage if it hits every single time.

Squidblimp2 votes

Well, I mean DPS in short period, AKA a teamfight. If twitch hits all 5 of the enemy team for all 7 seconds of his ult, his DPS is insane.

IcyPepper5 votes

Keep in mind that her abilities don't extend out the range. Tumble is a gap closer, and condemn is either cc or a gap maker.

Outside of that, she doesn't have range. She has no "safe" poke like Jinx, Caitlyn, Varus, or even Ashe has. She can't poke. If she gets within aa range, she is in range of almost every mid-far range ability in the game. Even Annie can harass her outside of Vayne's aa range with spells.

You had a fair point, but you need to include abilities. One factor alone is not a fair evaluation of a champion's power budget. If you're going to talk about aa range, you need to consider spell range as well.

Jari3 votes

What's with this attacking any champ that can scale nowadays. Vayne's fine. She's mechanically hard to play, has nothing to use that is farther than her auto attack range, is squishy as fuck, and has the worst laning phase for all adc's. If the complaint is that she has 550, well then why do other champs with 550 range get to have their range that far? Most of them can extend farther than 550.

Shockforce2 votes

I think KogMaw has a slightly worse laning phase.

Jari1 votes

As someone who has played both, Vayne has a worse laning Phase simple because Kog'maw can get the range he needs from his W, which also can help him against the tanky bot lane.

Not saying he has a good laning phase, it's still shit. Just Vayne is a little worse.

ZephyrDrake3 votes

vayne also is unable to do anything outside of that range unlike many other champions who can poke, wave clear and whanot from outside their auto attack range. Vayne is a champion that lives and dies by her auto attack range which isn't that great. Stop trying to look only at auto attack ranges if you have no idea what "short range" means. That's like saying that Xerath or Lux are short range mages because their auto attack ranges aren't great

Gaston du Coteau3 votes

You're a mongo who doesn't realize every ADC except her have skills with range beyond 550. I bet you're Bronze.

Jasiwel1 votes

Her AA range isn't the problem, it's the ball of stats attached to her ult.

Anidan5 votes

I can ask 4 different people about her and get 4 different answers about what's wrong with her. People have no idea what exactly they're complaining about but they know they don't like a champion.

That happens with every single fotm champion. Every. Single. One.

Jasiwel2 votes

You can't dismiss every answer as just a reaction to a champion being FotM. That implies that the champion only had said balance issues once they became FotM.

For Vayne, this is not true and has not been true since her last buff. Her ultimate's steroid literally makes her a ball of stats that tumbles at you for free invisibility and gap closing. Her lategame Silver Bolts with BotRK do enough damage as it is alongside Crit - the fact that her Rank 3 Ult gives a 3x MS boost to her passive and 70 additonal Atk Damage is absurd. In fact, her current Ultimate's power WAS a direct buff alongside an inherent Atk Speed increase.

I'm not saying Vayne is an abomination that should be nerfed to the ground. Not at all. I'm saying her Ultimate values need to be adjusted because right now they make her ADC Irelia.

Rysophage1 votes

What other steroids does she have? hm? She's an adc that doesn't have 650 range she's need some kind of steroid. and its an ULT. It's not supposed to be some mediocre ability.

Jasiwel1 votes

I didn't say "REMOVE HER STEROID OP", I said it needs to be toned down or even reverted to its last iteration. It wasn't mediocre to begin with and this meta is wonderful for her. Maybe they can increase it again in the future if they allow assassins to become abominations again, but right now she has so much free power that she can choose to bring smite to her lane. No other ADC (Ezreal Mid doesn't count) can do this and there are plenty of other ADCs with short ranges.

You also leave out the fact that while she doesn't have 600 Atk Range, she has a self peel that turns into a stun alongside being able to gapclose regularly. Don't act like her range makes her weak because she's one of the strongest ADCs in SoloQ right now.

Rysophage1 votes

Personally i think every ADC should have self peel. ADCS should all be somwhat self reliant especially considering how powerful this game's tanks and fighters are. Vayne's strong right now because all anyone ever builds is randuins and cinderhulk. I'm sorry that people actually have to have some kind of game sense to counter vayne and building thornmail and trying to 1v1 her dosen't work.(Unless you're irelia i guess.) Boo Hoo. Vayne is one of the most unforgiving adcs excluding draven. If she makes a mistake, she dies. If you make a mistake, you die. Thats the problem with most of this community they don't like champions that punish them for thier bad plays/decisions. (Yi and Kat for example)

Jasiwel1 votes

Oh I agree. My biggest issue is simply that her ultimate was buffed during a time when it was (sort of, but not completely) necessary. Now that time is over and her ultimate steroid has excessive power. They regularly shift Corki's damage for this reason every season, so I fail to see why Vayne (or any other ADC for that matter) should be any different.

Rysophage1 votes

her biggest counter is BURST not range. Look at Graves, Draven, Ashe, Corki, lucian if he's playing better than her, etc.

Rysophage1 votes

So much whining and crying about a champion you've probably never played.
