Jungling, Smite, and Reporting the Smiteless

I'm starting to think there's something inherently wrong with Junglers being able to not take Smite. Like, not "it creates problems" but in that "we've let bureaucracy build up to a point that it isn't logical, and we should change it."

I had a game with a Yi the other night who forgot to take Smite. I don't think it was intentional, things happen and iirc he swapped into the role. So even further chance for things to go awry. I get that life happens, but here's the thing:

You made jungle almost require Smite. To the point that if you don't take it you're set back monumentally. Even Nunu, who has a built-in Monster killer in his Consume takes Smite. It's not mandatory, but it's mandatory. If a jungler doesn't take smite, it amounts to a waste of everyone's time. 45 minutes down the tube. It's tilting, if done intentionally it would likely be called trolling, and it leads to a bad game experience for everyone on the team.

So why doesn't Riot make it mandatory? I actually don't know, but if I had to I'd guess that they've still got one foot in the "we don't want to dictate the meta" movement. And that's bad. I personally believe we need to reconfigure the system so that Smite always goes to your "F" key upon assignment. This is the simplest adjustment we have. Or at least some sort of "I see that you're jungling and you haven't taken smite" warning. I don't care if you are given smite and remove it, but this problem needs to be reduced.

tl;dr - If the problems created by not taking smite are so close to "trolling" that we can't tell the difference, something needs to change in order to reduce the amount of time wasted in playing this game.

It's worse to have a champion like Shaco refuse to take smite and instead take flash/ignite and then the team would lose baron/drag control for the rest of the game. Old jungle mains hated this point in time. Source: Stonewall008

The fact is Riot already made it almost mandatory by blocking jungle items to whoever didn't have smite. They could remove that, but changing this effect to jungle items "If you don't have smite assigned as one of your summoner spells, you can't gain the special effects of the item". Doing so will block laners without smite taking bloodrazor or cinderhulk, but people who forget smite could still start with the jungle item to not have such an hell of a start.

For the "auto-assing smite" mechanic, the game would not recognize when you swap. Would it still be possible to change summoners if auto-filled jungle and wanted to swap with top? And if you forgot to swap summ to smite once you decide to swap role? The mechanic it's a QoL but it doesn't help with the main subject of the topic,if i got it right.

You're over emphasizing a small issue, and pretending like we need to regulate everything. If you're swapping, the topic of who jungles gains high visibility. I'm not moved by the concept that this is a reason to not auto-assign at the start of the game.

I didn't say it was a bad idea,it's still a QoL that would help everybody,it's just that is not the main problem i am concerned of. You can ask to add the mechanic,it's not a problem.

Best solution imo, keep smite, keep jungle items, get rid of exp buff from jungle mobs for having a jungle item, increase base exp given from jungle camps.

This way if smite is forgotten, the only thing the jungles is giving up is objective control, vs also having to be behind the ball in exp as well and hurting their team even more.

But that's a huge relative XP boost for other lanes if they farm the jungle, putting junglers pretty far behind.

Indifferent to your idea except for dictating that smite goes to F. There's still an ample amount of people who take flash or another summoner spell on it, and it has the potential to mess up their ability to play properly to force them out of their preference.

This was meant to convey (briefly) that you can change the configuration to whatever you want (including no smite) but it auto starts in F.

Thank you for the clarification.

Smite has been mandatory since they reduced jg xp, made it only possible to get said xp with a jg item, then locked the jg items behind smite. They said they'd "never enforce the meta" but thats's exactly what they did.
