[suggestion] Caitlyn should spend more time channeling /casting her traps,or decrease the cast range

Hey guys,

I was thinking about how hunters actually set up Bear Traps etc. Usually this takes a long time to setup / arm. Currently Cait does it instantly. This process takes a while and its not instant. Hunters cant just arm a trap and hurl it far and hope it will work.

Also, the range on her traps are huge. She can place them under enemy tower without gettin in tower range. I think the distance of her cast range should be greatly reduced.

It would make more sense for her to take a knee, spend a second to arm the trap and then place it where she was standing, rather than her just instantly lobbing 3-4 traps under the enemy tower like pokeballs.

By reducing her cast range, Cait still has the option of placing traps under the tower, however she must now get closer. This will open up some counterplay options instead of just letting her zone you from looong range. Now she has to take a knee and get closer to do the same.

What do you guys think about Cait's traps? Do you think it would make more sense for her to reduce her cast range , or for her to spend more time casting / channeling as she arms her traps. Plus I dont think you can just toss a bear trap like that IRL. You have to carefuly place them on the ground.

Let me know. I think cait is pretty balanced but the distance/speed she can lay traps is a little obnoxious and a little unrealistic. I love Cait, but I think she can be a lil oppressive with her traps. Hopefully this makes her more fun to play against.

What do you guys think? Cheers.

With the distance she places the things, you'd think she'd be lobbing them rather than gently tossing them onto the ground, which is how she looks right now.

but that comes with the concept of Caitlyn . being able to do damage from afar. if you make her get "closer" to set traps then she is exposed and vulnerable. once Caitlyn is close the whole concept of her kit goes out the window. but i dont hear any one bitching about the range of Teemo shrooms and you cant see the fukers. the shrooms can bonus off the other one and go further. and no one likes Teemo

My comment contains nothing about gameplay, only aesthetic. Your comment is better suited responding to the OP, and not me.

oSEXYPLATYPUSo1 votes

well i get that but that is part of the aesthetic is her being a damage dealer from range, so her kit, abilites , ect all play into the aesthetic.

You see what I'm talking about, don't you? Her model does the same thing no matter how far she places her traps: A trap is being placed 400 range or less? Gentle toss will suffice. 600-800(max) range away? Now Cait needs a harder looking throw, or she'll just look like an admin spawning objects on an open-world simulator.

Well fair enough she is a long range marksman. Does that mean she should be able to set off traps at long range?

I think that setting the traps off at her current location is a good choice, as it will seperate the good caits from the bad. That way these traps are pre-placed before a fight, not during a fight. If you get caught in a trap, its because Cait carefuly planned and placed it there when she was at that spot, not because she lobbed a trap halfway across the lane.

Yes she is a long range marksman, but her trap is a utility skill. I think it would make sense to place it at her feet, as it makes the skill way more difficult to use. She can still be a long range bully for sure, she just needs some time to get close to place her traps.

Think about how snipers work. They place traps/ safegaurds around their post. Do they continue setting traps while engaging the enemy?

i see what youre saying and i dont disagree ... but i play Caitlyn and when im in a fight where and im getting closed in on what i do as im trying to kite back is ill play traps at my feet as i kite back so as they get close to me they step on trap and i can headshot, net headshot, q, and usually ult and i have one a 1 vs 1 this way a few times. but her traps are no different then the traps that Jhin places, i dont play Jhin so i dont know the range that he can place them for sure but its close to Caitlyn traps. once again on Jhin you can see his traps and they act like a Teemo shroom

Jhin and Cait traps are hugely different from one another...

Jhin traps, on activation open into a slow field that Jhin can use his W to root someone in. It requires actual set up. It's more similar to a Teemo shroom. Also, Jhin's traps can't zone from tower because they are actually tangible and can be seen from stealth if you place them in tower range.

Caitlyn, however, can just wait for a Blitz hook/Morg snare/Lux snare and toss her traps under them and combo them. Even though the traps that Jhin and Teemo place take a while to arm. As well, Cait can just put a line of traps under enemy tower to zone them, and they can't do anything about them.

I wouldn't want her traps to be placed right on top of her, shortening the trap placement range by like 200 would be fine enough, if you have the traps only being able placed on top of you, that just throws out her lane bully style and be buffed to be compensated as either a hyper carry or mid game adc. The thing is, how would it even be possible to buff her in that direction.

If anything, she's strong right now cause I'd say the meta favors early game more still, I mean look at the amount of adcs using korean builds and still doing a sht ton of dmg and snowballing off that.

So you're saying cait shouldn't have a weakness?

Even Lux is being encouraged to 'get close' so she can proc her passive. Same with Ziggs and Xerath.

Why does Cait get to enjoy the safety of very above-average range without ever having to get close, and even having an escape/steroid proc+slow if she ever does?

Are you seriously saying Cait is the only champ that shouldn't have a window of counterplay?

Teemo has plenty of weaknesses that Cait does not. First and fore-most is that is range is not nearly as long, on top of him not having a dash, hard CC, or reliable AoE. On top of that, his traps are 100% disabled by red trinket, and they can be destroyed without setting them off.

His kit is so weak that he can't do anything reliably outside of split-push top vs melees. You did NOT just compare these two champions, did you?

Knoyle1 votes

You can destroy Shrooms. You can't destroy Cait traps.

Personally, I think the common sense solution is to just add a normal cooldown to her traps like there was before it was a abusive skill. Let her keep the max of 5 traps, but give her back the old cooldown system. Then she can lay down traps defensively and strategically, but can't just suddenly shut off a lane at the drop of a hat.

redfeenix3 votes

Thsts honestly probably the best idea for the traps. Just revert the change from the charge system to regular cool down

Oleandervine4 votes

They need to make the traps have an HP bar, like every other pet/trap in the game.

What is nid's trap?

Other traps are stealthed though.

I forget Nidalee has a trap; Though, her trap isn't busted. It doesn't stop you and allow massive damage on you via AA.

angery pout1 votes

Nidalee's trap was busted vs monsters instead of champions. If you wanted to fuck a Nid over during early/mid season on her first clear you would invade her jungle before minions spawn and trigger all of the traps as she's setting them up so that she couldn't clear as effectively as possible.

If she catches you her level 1 kill pressure was pretty bad. Now most Nids start spear + Gromp because it does more damage (execute also does more damage than pounce on Gromp) and kinda mitigated that tactic.

nidalee traps and maokai shrubbery don't.

nidalee traps and maokai shrubbery don't.

That true. Though, both are those are far from busted in the likes of Caitlyn traps or Azir soldiers.

yhyh not disagreeing with you. just riot hasn't been really consistent with pets and traps.

For a woman of her size, placing a bear trap as far as she can right now is a bit unrealistic. I don't want this game to be balanced around realism, but at least try to make things seem like they're supposed to happen. This means a woman as slender as Caitlyn shouldn't be able to place a bear trap armed with a cupcake 20 feet away from her in a quarter of a second.

redfeenix1 votes

Tbf I think that skill is called yordle trap. So probably around the size of s pokeball. Or a mouse trap idk how big yordles are.

angery pout1 votes

Because of hitbox balance ingame most yordles are approximately the same size as humans. I like to think of Rumble as being truest to the size of yordles relative to humans. He's pretty small compared to other yordles because of his mech.

Where does she even keep all those cupcakes?

Enough things have been given a cast delay on them these days I'd rather not have more. Especially since it takes a moment for the trap to activate anyway.

redfeenix2 votes

Yeah fair enough, plus during that time she cant auto and will feel 'locked out' of doing aynthing else. What if she suddenly needs to run instead of finishing arming her trap.

What do you think of reducing the cast range of her trap (to the extreme: all the way down to 0).

I'd like to see them return to how they were before she could line them up across an entire lane. Maximum of 3, they deal damage, normal cooldown.

redfeenix1 votes

heh yeah thats probably for the best, idk why they thought it was a good idea to give her 5 traps that she could place within 3 seconds

SpongebobIsLife1 votes

bc they wanted to cement her more around her passive and they also wanted to give cait a good siege, because in comparison to jinx, kog, and tristana, she doesn't attack nearly as fast as they do, so in seasons past they were almost always picked before she was. The point of the marksman update, was to help give each adc a niche, and Caitlyn's niche is the anti-siege/siege adc.

Calabok1 votes

have her capable of 10 traps at once but don't let her buy shoes

please, for the love of god, make it so she can't place it directly under zhonya'd opponents. that's all I ask for.

TheOvermind1 votes

Is rather see a longer cast time, to prevent the animation canceling abuse and the fact that she has time to lay down traps when threatened while also fighting back and kiting. This would also reinforce the idea of a "trap". Traps are something that requires set up preemptively and not used in action reactively. Otherwise they simply are not traps .

redfeenix1 votes

Exactly. Currently I can drop 5 of them instantly. How is this setting up a trap, exactly? Your comment is well phrased, this is exactly what i was trying to communicate in my post.

Glad I helped :)

Cait is meant to shove you under tower then zone, just like panth is meant to do well early and malph has great engage.

Play around things, don't take the easy way out of just changing it to make it easier.

Just my two cents, anyways, good day

redfeenix1 votes

A tower is supposed to be a safety net for you. A safe zone, if you will where you will be safe. Thats why they're making the current changes to towers, so they are better at protecting allies.

Being zoned of a tower with no counterplay is an unhealthy mechanic. Look at my suggestions, they make sense and imo they are fair. Cait is my main ADC and even I think that her traps are really obnoxious.

Agreed 100%

One of Caitlyn's intended weaknesses is the absurd cast time of her abilities. She channels her Peacemaker for one full second, no other carry has to do that. Her .68 Caliber Net has a very long windup for an escape, compare it to Lucian's Pursuit or Ezreal's Arcane Shift. And of course Ace in the Hole not only has a long channel, but it also has the opportunity to be body blocked during the long channel.

We don't need to increase the cast time of her one instant ability. She needs to have something on demand.

Dengeden1 votes

By all means, you can do something about her CDs to discourage maxing traps first but by no means should you make casting traps less skillful or even harder for her.

AwesomeChad1 votes

caitlyn has too much lane control due specifically to her traps. I really wish riot didn't change her traps from the old magic dmg to now passive procs. Its stupid. If anything, they should nerf the range of the passive proc so caitlyn has to be closer to her targets.

Evewynn1 votes

I'd be okay with them taking time and having reduced range as long as they got damage back into them. Have to be rewarded for taking that kind of risk to set up an easily avoidable trap.

zlumpy1 votes

Perfect solution OP!

Range cut allows defensive use without being able to make abusive walls offensively. Plus she already has a literal safety net so even if she messes up placement she can launch away and run/fight.

redfeenix1 votes

Thanks zlumpy,

I think the key thing I'm lookin for is that Traps (esp for hunters) take some time and prethinking to setup and position.

The current cait can just spam 500 traps in 1.5 seconds. This way she caan still use traps, as long as she is wlling to invest slightly more time. Especially under enemy tower, she will be more vulernable and cant just throw out 20 traps in half a second.

zlumpy1 votes

Plus the whole walk on them as a tank thing doesn't work when she only places 3 or 4 and the amount of time it takes to recover from a 1/4 or so hp headshot she can easily just replace the trap you tried to remove.
